Malaysia advances 11 spots in World Competitiveness Ranking 2025

Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has jumped 11 spots in the World Competitiveness Ranking (WCR) 2025 to 23rd place -- its best ranking since 2020 -- reflecting the progressive momentum in the country's economic recovery and reform agenda. The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) said the latest ranking, up from 34th last year, also reaffirmed the nation's trajectory towards becoming one of the world's top 12 most competitive economies by 2033 as targeted under the MADANI Economy framework. "Economic performance, government efficiency and business efficiency factors drove Malaysia's overall competitiveness performance,' it said in a statement today. Malaysia ranked fourth globally in economic performance, improving four spots from eighth place last year. Both government efficiency and business efficiency factors improved by eight positions. MITI said the international trade sub-factor increased 11 places to sixth, as strong export growth in goods and services, diversified markets, and rising tourism receipts strengthened Malaysia's trade surplus. The ministry also expressed confidence that with strong governance, continuous commitment from the federal and state governments and close cooperation with the private sector, Malaysia is on the right path to position itself among the world's 12 most competitive economies by 2033. Commenting on the WCR 2025 ranking, MITI Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said the government's whole-of-government approach under the MADANI framework demonstrated its commitment to holistic structural reforms. "Malaysia's move up the rankings by 11 positions to 23rd from 34th last year reflects how bureaucracy-related reforms are closely intertwined with facilitating robust investment and industrial growth, both critical for enhancing Malaysia's attractiveness as a preferred investment destination,' he said. MITI, through the National Competitiveness Committee (JKDSN) - co-chaired with Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan - coordinates the strategic direction across ministries to enhance Malaysia's competitiveness. At the operational level, the Special Taskforce on Agency Reform (STAR), led by the Chief Secretary Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, ensures effective implementation of competitiveness initiatives, including over 1,000 Reformasi Kerenah Birokrasi (RKB) projects aligned to the Public Service Reform Agenda (ARPA). The WCR is published annually by the Institute for Management Development based in Switzerland. It is a comprehensive report that evaluates countries based on their ability to create and maintain a business-friendly environment that fosters long-term prosperity. - Bernama

Govt committed to upskilling workers, says Sim

PUTRAJAYA: The government is intensifying efforts to restore dignity to Malaysian workers by pushing for fair wages, safer working conditions, and greater access to upskilling, said Human Resources Minister Steven Sim. Sim said Malaysia must move away from the low-wage economic model and instead attract high-value industries that can offer better-paying jobs for local talent. "We are in a race to catch up on lost time, lost opportunities and missed progress. And indeed, when I was appointed as the minister responsible for human resources, one of the things that keeps me up at night is workers' wages. "I want our workers to receive wages that truly reflect the value of their work. But I also recognise that wages are not determined solely by the generosity of employers or the skills of workers," he said at the launch of the P10X Academy here today. He said that while wages were often viewed as the responsibility of employers or tied to workers' competency, the deeper challenge lies in the country's overall economic structure. "If the majority of our workers remain in traditional sectors such as agriculture or low-skilled manufacturing, naturally, wages will remain low." He also said Malaysia has been caught in the middle-income trap since the 1990s and must now transition towards high-value industries such as semiconductors, consulting, and advanced engineering in order to break through. To support this, Sim said the government was actively courting strategic investments from global tech giants, including Microsoft and Google, which could create high-quality jobs for Malaysians. "These are not just local companies, they are defining how the world uses the Internet and mobile technology. Together with local firms and government support, they can lift us up the value chain." He said this was aligned with the Madani Economy framework introduced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, which aims to "raise the ceiling" by increasing the value of economic output, and "raise the floor" by improving workers' wellbeing. "We cannot allow companies to rake in millions while underpaying workers or ignoring minimum wage laws. Workers must be properly compensated." Sim said the ministry was focused on three strategic priorities: improving workers' welfare, upgrading skills, and boosting productivity, which he referred to as the "3Ks" under the broader objective of "karamah insaniah" (human dignity). "Our goal is for every worker to go to work with dignity, be fairly paid, and return home safely." Among the initiatives introduced is the UP_TVET portal, which centralises applications to more than 600 public and private TVET institutions. The portal has received over 140,000 applications to date. He said the ministry had also reduced the certificate processing time for national skills accreditation from two months to two weeks, with a target of just one day in the future. To elevate the standing of technical education, he said the government was amending the National Skills Development Act (Act 652) to include Levels 6, 7, and 8, making TVET qualifications equivalent to those of a bachelor's, master's, and even PhD levels. "We want to make it clear that TVET is not a second-class option. It is a viable and prestigious pathway to career success and national development." He added that skilled Malaysian workers were increasingly in demand, especially those with certified technical qualifications. "This is why we are investing over RM10 billion this year in education and skills training. If we want high-value jobs, we must build high-value people."

PM hails reforms and public-private cooperation for surge in global competitiveness ranking

Anwar has praised Malaysia's jump to rank 23rd in the IMD World Competitiveness Ranking 2025. — Bernama photo PUTRAJAYA (June 17): Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has today lauded Malaysia for jumping 11 places to rank 23rd in the IMD World Competitiveness Ranking 2025, marking its best performance in five years. The Prime Minister said the surge reflected the effectiveness of his administration's reform initiatives and the collective efforts of both the public and private sectors. 'We have proven that Malaysia is capable of making great strides forward through strong political will, the commitment of the entire government machinery, and close cooperation with the private sector,' he said in a statement here. He said Malaysia's improvements in trade, administrative efficiency and the investment environment had laid the groundwork for sustainable and inclusive economic growth. 'This achievement belongs to all Malaysians,' Anwar added. He described the latest ranking as a significant step towards the country's goal of becoming one of the world's most competitive economies by 2033. The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti) said earlier the latest ranking, up from 34th last year, reaffirmed the nation's trajectory towards becoming one of the world's top 12 most competitive economies by 2033 as targeted under the Madani Economy framework. Malaysia ranked fourth globally in economic performance, improving four spots from eighth place last year. Both government efficiency and business efficiency factors improved by eight positions. The ministry also expressed confidence that with strong governance, continuous commitment from the federal and state governments and close cooperation with the private sector, Malaysia is on the right path to position itself among the world's 12 most competitive economies by 2033. According to the IMD World Competitiveness Centre, the annual ranking assesses countries based on four factors: economic performance, government efficiency, business efficiency, and infrastructure.
