
TFP rolls out e-wages to boost financial inclusion, workplace efficiency
Developed through its subsidiary SoftFac Technology Sdn Bhd in partnership with MobilityOne Sdn Bhd, a Bank Negara-licensed financial service provider, the platform marked a major advancement in promoting financial inclusion and workforce efficiency in the country.
As concerns mount over wage transparency, security and exploitation in traditional cash-based payroll systems, e-Wages was positioned as a comprehensive and secure solution that benefitted both employers and employees.
By integrating financial technology, telecommunications and regulatory compliance features, the platform ensured that salary payments were processed on time, traceable and fully compliant with existing labour and banking laws.
It eliminates the need for risky, manual methods and creates a system of accountability that supports the fair and consistent payment of wages.
e-Wages has been endorsed under the Malaysia Madani Digital Initiative, aligning with the government's push for a cashless economy and digital transformation.
By digitising payroll, the platform not only minimises the risks of fraud and worker exploitation but also improves the accuracy of GDP reporting through properly documented salary transactions.
Sectors such as manufacturing, construction, plantations and food and beverage were expected to benefit greatly from this streamlined and transparent payroll solution.
TFP's initiative came at a time when over 200,000 employers in Malaysia were still reliant on conventional wage distribution methods. With e-Wages, TFP was tapping into a multi-billion-ringgit opportunity while simultaneously enhancing its financial performance, ESG standing and investor appeal.
TFP Group chief executive officer Eugena Braganza described the launch as a significant milestone in Malaysia's digital journey.
"This is more than just a tech deployment; it's national infrastructure. We're proud to contribute to Malaysia's digital transformation and play a key role in empowering the foreign workforce through practical, secure and inclusive solutions," she said.
Employers nationwide were currently being onboarded to adopt the platform and businesses were encouraged to leverage e-Wages to simplify their payroll operations and support the well-being of their workers.
e-Wages functions as an end-to-end digital ecosystem that centralises payroll, payments and remittance services into a single, user-friendly system.
Workers receive a physical Mastercard that is accepted globally, allowing them secure and convenient access to their wages.
Locally, they can make payments through DuitNow at over two million merchant outlets across Malaysia.
The system also included built-in, licensed international remittance services, enabling workers to send money home instantly and legally.
The solution also came bundled with nationwide mobile connectivity through CelcomDigi, ensuring users remained connected and accessible at all times.
The platform addresses longstanding issues that have plagued the payroll system, such as the need to withdraw and distribute large sums of cash, the manual handling of salaries by HR staff and the use of undocumented and illegal money transfer services.
By removing these outdated practices, e-Wages not only protects workers but also reduces administrative burdens for employers.

Harder for illegal foreign fishing vessels

Kota Kinabalu: Malaysia has strengthened controls on foreign fishing vessels entering its waters through the Management System for the Entry of Foreign Fishing Vessels into Ports (e-PSM). Department of Fisheries Malaysia Director-General Datuk Adnan Hussain said the digital system was developed in line with international standards and under Section 15(2) of the Fisheries Act 1985, aimed at combating illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities. 'This system manages applications for foreign vessels to enter the country's ports, improves control efficiency and supports Malaysia's commitment against IUU fishing. Any foreign vessel must obtain approval from the Fisheries Department before being allowed to dock at national ports,' he said. Through e-PSM, vessel owners must submit applications including information on entry dates, destination ports and catch details for assessment and entry approval. He said failure to implement such controls would be seen as supporting IUU fishing. Advertisement Despite not yet ratifying the Port State Measures Agreement, Malaysia remains committed to complying with the requirements outlined in the international agreement. The system ensures entering vessels are not in the IUU category and controls fish species landings to prevent violations of international regulations, including prohibited fish or species under the CITES list. Applications are reviewed with international bodies including Australia, the European Union and regional organisations such as the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission and Western Pacific Tuna Commission to verify vessel registration status. As of 2024-2025, a total of 20 foreign vessels have been approved to enter Malaysian ports, landing 550 metric tons of tuna and similar species at Penang Port. High-value orders lift outlook for S. Korean shipbuilders
A liquefied natural gas carrier built by HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co SEOUL: South Korea's major shipbuilders – HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, Samsung Heavy Industries and Hanwha Ocean – are set to post stronger profit growth over the coming quarters, as high-margin gas carrier orders placed since 2023 begin to flow into their earnings. These liquefied natural gas (LNG), ammonia and liquefied petroleum gas carriers, typically priced more than 10% higher than earlier contracts, are expected to sharply boost shipyard profitability amid stabilising construction costs. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is already seeing the impact. The shipbuilder last Thursday reported a 141% surge in operating profit to 471.5 billion won or about US$339mil for the April-June quarter, while revenue climbed 6.8% to 4.15 trillion won. Analysts at IBK Securities said the turnaround is being driven by LNG carriers ordered in 2023, which have started contributing to revenue. Currently, orders for gas carriers secured from 2023 account for 29% of HD Hyundai's sales – a figure expected to rise to 60% by year-end. The company's order backlog, 70% of which consists of gas carriers, covers about three years of production, suggesting elevated earnings will persist through at least 2026. Most of the high-value contracts have yet to be fully reflected in financials, as it typically takes two to three years for orders to be recognised. Samsung Heavy and Hanwha Ocean are on similar trajectories. Analysts expect their LNG carrier orders from 2023 to begin contributing to earnings late this year and early next year, respectively. Gas carriers account for more than 60% of both firms' backlogs. Prices for 174,000-cubic-m LNG carriers have continued to climb, reaching US$259mil in 2023 and US$263mil in 2024, up from US$232mil in 2022 and significantly above the US$210mil average seen in Qatar's bulk orders from 2022. Those Qatari deals still represent a sizeable portion of revenue – about 37% for HD Hyundai, 27% for Samsung Heavy and 24% for Hanwha Ocean. Analysts said input costs are not rising at the same pace, thanks in part to a more stable labour market. 'It has been over two years since foreign workers entered domestic shipyards on E-7 and E-9 visas. Their skills have improved, helping to stabilise labour costs,' said Oh Ji-hoon, an analyst at IBK Securities. Some analysts caution that rising ship prices alone may not guarantee wider margins, pointing to fluctuating steel pricing, a key input cost in shipbuilding. — The Korea Herald/ANN
