'Coolie' movie review: A starry spectacle with a thin plot line
Violence, vengeance, and vigilantism mark fanboy filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj's much awaited 'Coolie'.Riding heavily on the swag, wit and mannerisms of the mass idol Rajinikanth, 'Coolie' is an ode to the star, who is celebrating his golden jubilee year in learning his friend Rajashekar is murdered, a furious Daya (Rajinikanth) takes it as his life's mission to avenge his film suffers from a sloppily written script that criss-crosses and takes numerous twists and turns to no avail. Despite its many bankable stars, the film fails to provide an engrossing and wholesome experience. 'Coolie' is collated with cameos — Telugu cinema's Nagarjuna, Kannada cinema's Upendra, a blink and miss Aamir Khan representing Bollywood, and Marathi-Hindi cinema's Mahesh Manjrekar. The young director makes sure to provide 'Coolie' a pan-Indian flamboyance..'Coolie' FDFS: From bursting crackers to full house bookings, Rajinikanth fans set the bar superstar Rajinikanth is the pivot, principle purpose and sheet anchor for the 170-minute wafer-thin plotline, Soubin Shahir charms the audience with an arresting performance as Dayal. More so with his dance moves for the song 'Monica'. Even Pooja Hegde pales before Soubin's playful gyrations. The song is the only 'whistle podu' moment for the crowds, apart from the electric presence of their Thalaiva. If you leave out the song, the much-praised Anirudh Ravichander's music comes a Soubin, Upendra steals the limelight as Kaleesha, Daya's comrade in arms (literally). With men forming the combatants in this highly combustible actioner, where every second person is felled with a bullet or machete, the ladies — Shruti Haasan and Rachita Ram — have nothing much to do. The villains just toss them around as bargaining making 'Coolie' bloody and gory, Lokesh Kanagaraj has elevated villainy and violence to its full brutal form. While Rajinikanth lives and walks through his fan-pleasing role, the others play second fiddle to elevate his charisma and screen presence.

Coolie box office collection day 1 early report: Rajinikanth film likely to cross Rs 100 crore mark worldwide
Coolie box office collection day 1 early report: The Rajinikanth-starrer Coolie released amid massive hype, with many expecting it to surpass the opening-day collection record of 'Thalapathy' Vijay's Leo. However, early estimates indicate that Coolie may fall short of surpassing Leo in opening-day earnings for a Tamil film. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the Rajinikanth action thriller has earned Rs 49.57 crore in India as of 8 pm on Thursday. The film is expected to cross the Rs 100 crore mark worldwide. Leo had collected Rs 145 crore worldwide on it release day. However, Coolie's numbers are promising as it has released alongside Bollywood actioner War 2. The sequel of War, starring Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR and Kiara Advani in pivotal roles, has earned Rs 35.97 crore as of 8 pm. Also Read | Coolie Movie Release Live Updates Rajinikanth's Coolie recorded an overall occupancy of 84.55% in Tamil, with large crowds turning up for the first-day-first-show and continuing into the afternoon screenings. Around 3,300 Tamil shows were scheduled across India. The Hindi version, released on about 1,200 screens, registered an overall occupancy of 29.16%. The Telugu version performed strongly, with an impressive 91.09% occupancy across 1,100 shows. An expert from SCREEN's review of Coolie read, 'Coolie has interesting ideas like any Lokesh Kanagaraj film, and you get charming supporting performances, especially Nagarjuna and Soubin Shahir, who get the most screen time after Rajnikanth. These two revel in the sinister actions of the characters, but they play mere archetypal villains, who get to slash people endlessly on screen and look cool doing it. The film tries to co-opt the successful 'bread crumbs' narrative of Vikram, Lokesh's best work to date, which follows the death of the character and the ensuing chaos set forth by the slow unraveling of what is really going on under all the lies and hidden truths. Coolie misses the emotional grounding and levity provided by Fahad Faasil in Vikram. Instead, Lokesh unevenly tries to build up similar scenes of suspense and light-hearted banter with middling results.'
