'Refugees or illegal entrants?' SC questions Rohingyas' status in India; outlines other issues raised in pleas
NEW DELHI: The
Supreme Court
on Thursday outlined the determination of the
Rohingyas
' status - whether they are refugees or illegal entrants in India- as the first major issue to be dealt with in cases concerning them .
A bench of Justices Surya Kant, Dipankar Datta and N Kotiswar Singh noted that once that is decided, only then the other issues might be consequential.
The bench made the observation while hearing a batch of pleas concerning Rohingyas in the country.
"The first major issue is simple, are they refugees or illegal entrants," Justice Kant observed, according to news agency PTI.
"Whether the Rohingyas are entitled to be declared as refugees? If so, what protections, privileges or rights they are entitled to?" he added.
According to the bench, the second issue is that if the Rohingyas are illegal entrants, and not refugees, then whether there deportation by the Centre or states, is "justified."
The court further stated that the other issue raised in the petitions is whether the Rohingyas who have not been detained and are living in refugee camps, have been provided basic amenities such as drinking water, sanitation, and education.

The bench segregated the pleas in three groups - one relating to Rohingyas, another not pertaining to them, and one which pertained to a completely different matter but related to them.
The judges also asked why these petitions were tagged for hearing. The counsel appearing for the petitioners replied that there were "overlapping issues" in the pleas, and one of the core issues pertained to the detention of Rohingyas.
One of the lawyers stated that the Rohingyas cannot be detained indefinitely.
The court fixed each matter to be heard separately on consecutive Wednesdays.

Andhra govt deposits Rs 7,000 each to 47 lakh farmers under 'Annadatha Sukhibhava' scheme
PTI Andhra Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu The Andhra Pradesh government-led by N Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday deposited Rs 7,000 each to 47 lakh farmers as part of the 'Annadatha Sukhibhava' scheme, which offers Rs 20,000 financial aid to farmers per annum. Launching the Rs 3,174 crore statewide initiative, the CM handed over cheque to two farmers as a symbolic gesture and another Rs 29 crore specific to Darsi constituency, according to a video link shared by the government. Naidu disbursed the first tranche of funds at East Veerayapalem village of Darsi mandal in Prakasam district. Out of the Rs 7,000 credited to lakhs of farmers today, Rs 5,000 came from the southern state while the remaining Rs 2,000 was offered by the central government as part of the PM-Kisan scheme. Clubbing the Centre's contribution of Rs 6,000 under PM-Kisan and the state's contribution of Rs 14,000, the southern state aims to disburse Rs 20,000 per annum to eligible farmers under 'Annadatha Sukhibhava'- 'PM Kisan' scheme in three installments. The NDA government in the state has allocated Rs 2,343 crore for the first installment while the Centre provided Rs 831 crore.'Annadatha Sukhibhava' is a poll promise made by Naidu in the run-up to the 2024 polls and is part of the 'Super Six' set of election promises, which assured three free cooking gas cylinders per annum, Rs 15,000 per annum for every school-going child, Rs 1,500 monthly financial aid for women between 19 and 59 years and others.
