Meet Gary Winner, who cashed in more than $1 million from a Pennsylvania Lottery ticket

Yahoo6 hours ago

Erie County resident Gary Winner is getting a big reward for a $20 investment. He is the newest millionaire thanks to the Cash 5 with Quick Cash Jackpot from the Pennsylvania Lottery.
Officials from the Pennsylvania Lottery said about Winner in a news release that, "with a last name like that, it's no surprise that luck seemed to be on his side."
When 64-year-old Winner walked into the Giant Eagle at 2501 W. 12th St. he probably didn't think he would later end up winning a major jackpot.
This game wasn't Winner's first experience with the Pennsylvania Lottery, but it was his first major jackpot.
"I've been playing Cash 5 for a long time and like other games, I usually only play when the jackpot is high," Winner said. "I went into Giant Eagle and saw the Cash 5 jackpot was over $2 million and I thought 'well I'm going to buy $20 worth, Quick Pick."
The total jackpot drawing of $2,325,690 was split between Winner and a player who purchased a winning ticket at a 7-Eleven in Buttler County. Each lottery winner received $1,162,845.
Winner told the Pennsylvania Lottery that when he discovered he won, it took his breath away.
"I walked by the machine and realized someone hit the jackpot," Winner said. "Why don't I just scan my ticket here? I looked and saw winner and I was like 'oh my gosh.' I had to take a deep breath."
Winner was next to another Giant Eagle customer who was just as shocked as he was that he won big.
'At that time, I saw a customer come in and he asked me, 'What's the matter?' I said, 'I think I just hit Cash 5! Look at these numbers.' He said, 'Holy cow, looks like you did!'' said Winner.
The first thing Winner did when he realized his new fortune was call his wife to share the great news.
"She couldn't believe it," Winner said.
Winner is planning to help his wife retire with his lottery winnings. He also plans on using the money to help remodel his home.
The Giant Eagle in Millcreek Township that sold the winning ticket will be receiving a $10,000 bonus.
The grocery chain says that this bonus will be shared with Meals on Wheels Erie.
Coin's farewell: The penny is going out of circulation. What should I do with my change?
'With retailers like Giant Eagle playing a vital role and Lottery prizes and jackpots continuing to capture imaginations, the Pennsylvania Lottery continues to deliver life-changing moments, one ticket at a time,' Drew Svitko, Pennsylvania Lottery executive director, said in a release.

The Impact Of Data Infrastructure On Global AI Leadership

NetApp NetApp recently released findings from its 2025 AI Space Race report, a global research initiative designed to benchmark AI readiness across executive leadership and IT teams. The dataset comprises feedback from 800 executives, evenly split between CEOs and IT leaders, from the United States, United Kingdom, China, and India. The research captures a pivotal moment in the adoption of enterprise AI. With generative AI deployments accelerating within the enterprise, the gap between aspiration and execution is becoming increasingly consequential. NetApp's report sheds light on where organizations stand, where internal misalignments persist, and what infrastructure foundations matter most as enterprises transition from pilot projects to production AI systems. The AI Business Imperative A central insight from the survey is that AI success hinges less on vision and more on operational readiness. Across geographies, most organizations, 88%, report themselves as 'mostly or fully ready' for AI, with 81% piloting or scaling AI initiatives. Despite this apparent momentum, the research identified critical gaps between CEO expectations and IT capabilities that threaten to derail these efforts. The study indicates that many organizations lack deep investments in foundational infrastructure, such as secure, scalable data platforms. This can undermine their ability to scale from proof-of-concept to full production deployments effectively. The Global Competitive Landscape When executives were asked which region will lead AI innovation over the next five years, 43% pointed to the United States as the likely winner. Nearly two-thirds of American respondents backed their own country, while Chinese executives showed a similar home-country bias, suggesting that these perceptions may be influenced by nationalistic confidence. Unsurprisingly, China emerges as America's primary challenger for AI dominance, with 43% of Chinese respondents predicting their nation will lead in AI development. This confidence stems from massive infrastructure investments and aggressive scaling strategies. However, the report reveals a critical weakness in China's approach: a dangerous misalignment between CEO ambitions and IT execution capabilities. Even here, a readiness gap exists. While 92% of Chinese CEOs claim their companies have active AI projects, only 74% of their IT leaders agree. This 18-point gap suggests Chinese executives are overcounting their AI progress, creating unrealistic expectations that will limit long-term competitiveness. By contrast, American companies exhibit a much stronger alignment, with CEO and IT assessments matching closely at 77% and 86%, respectively. India and the United Kingdom acknowledge their underdog status, with nearly one-third of executives in both countries reporting additional pressure to compete against the perceived leaders of the United States and China. This recognition drives focused investment strategies that position these markets as potential disruptors in specific AI verticals. The Impact of Data Infrastructure NetApp's research identifies the adoption of an intelligent data infrastructure as a decisive factor separating AI leaders from AI followers. Enterprises need data systems that are accessible, secure, and scalable to generate trusted outcomes from their AI investments. Without this foundation, even the most ambitious AI strategies can fail to deliver results. That's not to say that there's only one correct approach. The report indicates that the deployment of AI infrastructure frequently follows divergent competitive philosophies across various regions. Chinese respondents, for example, prioritize scalability above all else, with 35% ranking it as their top capability, compared to just 24% globally. This reflects a sprint strategy focused on immediate market impact. American, British, and Indian companies, on the other hand, take a different approach, emphasizing integration with existing systems to build sustainable long-term advantages. These strategic differences have real consequences. The survey found that 79% of executives fear their AI initiatives will produce broken models and biased insights due to poor data foundations. Companies that shortcut infrastructure development to accelerate AI deployment often discover their rushed approach creates more problems than solutions. The Data Infrastructure Arms Race The AI infrastructure market is a battlefield where no established technology supplier can afford to fall behind. NetApp chief marketing officer Gabie Boko told me that it's precisely for this reason that NetApp commissions surveys like this one. It's one of the ways it understands the challenges its customers face. NetApp approaches this market with its Intelligent Data Infrastructure, which enables scalable, secure, and operationally efficient AI and data-driven workloads. Unlike legacy storage architectures or ad hoc cloud deployments, NetApp integrates data management, governance, and observability directly into its hybrid cloud platform. The NetApp Intelligent Data Infrastructure supports AI-native patterns, like model training, fine-tuning, and inference, by providing consistent performance, global data access, and real-time visibility across edge, core, and cloud environments. NetApp's approach emphasizes integration over layered complexity across the full spectrum of enterprise data needs, not just AI. It's a strong play. NetApp isn't alone in this market. Dell Technologies, for example, offers its Dell AI Data Platform to support its Dell AI Factory offerings. Dell's solution combines its broad portfolio of storage solutions with Nvidia's AI Data Platform to address enterprise AI challenges. HPE and Pure Storage each take similar, if less opinionated, approaches. Beyond the traditional storage landscape, disruptors like VAST Data and WEKA are also players, taking a more targeted approach to addressing the problem. Innovations like its Augmented Memory Grid and the recently announced NeuralMesh microservices architecture give WEKA a compelling play for reliable, performant, and operational efficient AI infrastructure at scale. WEKA's is an AI-first solution, lacking some of the broader enterprise-focused capabilities found in general-purpose mainstream storage. VAST Data takes things even further, packaging several AI tools together into an opinionated hyper-converged AI stack that it calls the VAST AI OS. This HCAI approach makes VAST less of a direct competitor to the rest of the storage market and more of a competitor to full-stack AI solutions. It should be evaluated as such. The competitive intensity in this market illustrates a broader market reality and reinforces NetApp's findings: AI infrastructure is a critical battleground for long-term customer relationships. Companies that lose this race risk becoming irrelevant as AI becomes central to business operations. Analyst's Take: The Road Ahead NetApp's findings convey a clear message: successful AI implementation requires more than just cutting-edge technology. Organizations must achieve perfect alignment between executive vision and operational execution while building scalable infrastructure foundations. Companies that master this combination will establish lasting competitive advantages. The global nature of AI competition also has an impact, creating complex challenges for multinational organizations. Companies operating across regions must navigate different regulatory environments, talent markets, and customer expectations while maintaining consistent AI capabilities. Success requires adapting strategies to local conditions while preserving global coherence. The report says that 'one of the most significant success factors in the AI Space Race will be data infrastructure and data management, supported by cloud solutions that are agile, secure, and scalable. Successful organizations need an intelligent data infrastructure in place to ensure unfettered AI innovation." It's hard to disagree with that. NetApp's AI Space Race study reinforces its position in the enterprise data infrastructure market. By framing the readiness conversation around organizational alignment and data strategy, NetApp shifts the focus from compute horsepower to the broader challenge of holistically managing the enterprise data lifecycle. It's an approach aligned with current trends across the AI infrastructure ecosystem, where storage, observability, and data orchestration increasingly dictate scalability. NetApp's emphasis on full-stack integration, particularly within multi-cloud environments, differentiates it from infrastructure players that focus purely on on-premises or hyperscaler-native AI stacks. It's a compelling story. Disclosure: Steve McDowell is an industry analyst, and NAND Research is an industry analyst firm, that engages in, or has engaged in, research, analysis and advisory services with many technology companies, including those named in this article: Dell Technologies, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, NetApp, NVIDIA, Pure Storage, VAST Data, and WEKA. No company mentioned was involved in the writing of this article. Mr. McDowell does not hold any equity positions with any company mentioned.

At Proper Hotels, Come For Vacation, Stay For The Live Music

AUSTIN, TEXAS - MARCH 10: DJ Pee .Wee performs during Proper Presents: DJ Pee .Wee at The Quill Room ... More at Austin Proper Hotel on March 10, 2025 in Austin, Texas. (Photo byfor Austin Proper) Imagine you head to Santa Monica or Austin on business, and you are booked into a Proper Hotel. Looking to unwind, grab food, you have a meeting, whatever, and you head to the restaurant or bar and there is Phantogram playing, or Anderson Paak. DJing. This is the new reality as the music and hotel industries increasingly understand the symmetry between the two worlds. Musicians bring customers with them wherever they go, and hotels have built-in clienteles looking for things to do. Why not introduce them to each other? As I found in talking to hotels around the country (a full roundup is coming soon), the idea of live music on properties is an increasingly common and advanced practice, with some venues, like Rockaway Hotel, in New York, hosting full shows. With properties in several major locations – LA, Santa Monica, Austin, San Francisco, Montauk, Miami, Palm Springs and more – Proper is uniquely positioned though to build on this dynamic by booking artists into multiple venues. I spoke with Proper President and co-founder Brian De Lowe and VP, Activations and Experiences Casey Dolkas about the relationship between the two worlds. They explained that with wellness, fitness, hospitality and more, it is part of their Proper Presents program, creating a world within a world. Steve Baltin: How have you seen the demand for live music change in the hotel industry? Brian De Lowe: It's interesting, because I think when we started in the hotel business, you know, at another hotel brand, our hotels were differentiated because of the design. That was what differentiated us, and that was enough, because back in the day the hotels got standardized with the Marriot's and the Hilton's of the world. And we could do something different that's boutique and independent and design forward and people flocked, and I think to your point, now just having design isn't enough. So, our hotels today are a lot more than just a cool place to stay with great design. They know they can come to our hotels and get the pulse of the city without leaving the hotels and music's a big component of that. Baltin: It seems like it's something where it used to be you'd go into a city, you'd stay in the hotel, you'd go out and go back to the hotel that night. But now the hotel has become where you go for the entertainment. De Lowe: Yeah, we're creating spaces and experiences, so you don't have to leave. You wake up, you don't have to leave to go to the gym because we have an incredible fitness center, amazing wellness amenities like cold plunges and saunas and red-light therapy and all that. You don't have to leave to get coffee because we partner with a great coffee brand and we have a great breakfast in the lobby and then you don't have to leave for meetings because everyone wants to come to you because our lobbies are so beautiful and all that. And then of course, Casey will talk more about Proper Presents, but what really keeps you is all the cultural programming. Casey Dolkas: You said you're familiar with Santa Monica Proper. Austin Proper obviously is a huge music scene. And my favorite thing about Austin Proper is watching guests, we have many different food and beverage outlets and spaces, right? So, imagine a guest going there for dinner and then naturally there as they're walking out, they get sucked into this space because they want to grab a drink and there's music. They find this pocket of this lounge where they can grab a different drink and hear a different vibe of music here and then going upstairs. So that's my favorite thing about Austin Proper and Santa Monica has a great opportunity for that as well. So, in terms of music, even just subconsciously, that guest, whether you're staying at the hotel or you're just a local coming for dinner to experience, you end up just getting sucked into the environment, the energy. Baltin: I imagine the artists love it as well because it brings them to a new audience. Dolkas: Definitely, that's definitely one of my favorite parts. And that's how Proper Presents was born. Last year, we wanted our cultural programming platform to have an identity. That became Proper Presents. Within Proper Presents, we have different categories. There's health, wellness, fitness, culinary, panels and conversations. And then, of course, music, which we find is really the heartbeat of Proper Presents. And yeah, you nailed it. I think it's so amazing to see someone like Phantogram or Neil Frances putting them in these spaces where they might have a built-in audience already coming to Proper to see this very special intimate performance or on the contrary, discovery. So, if you're a hotel guest traveling and you're walking out of the lobby and you happen to see Phantogram or Neil Frances performing, that's going to be something that you're going to remember. Baltin: It is a very mutual relationship because obviously people are coming into the hotel to see a Phantogram. Then hopefully they come back on the weekend to check it out, go to dinner, whatever. Dolkas: Yes, and that's definitely how we always want to approach it. We want to approach it in a very organic partnership angle. So, for example, Phantogram was an album release party, Miami Horror's album release party, Banks was an album launch. So, we always like to approach it in this very like win-win scenario where the artists, the record label, their team, they're getting a marketing event out of it. We split the guest list with them, so they get to invite either personally or they know of our hotels and our guests and fans of our hotels already. So, it's not just this mutually beneficial business deal. It's where they know our brand and they know us, and they resonate with us. It feels natural for them to come because our venues aren't music venues, which is part of what's cool about it. They come and they're comfortable in the space, they're comfortable with the crowd. There's a real sense of discovery for some. There are the fans; the mix of all that together is really special. Baltin: Obviously being a hotel, you have a built-in advantage in establishing relationships with and understanding artists because you have musicians stay there all the time. Dolkas: Correct. And yeah, we're fortunate that those artists want to stay with us whether they're on tour or in town for a festival and that's a great way to partner with them as well. We love to support so if we are supporting their album launch, their tour launch, some sort of marketing event or promo for them, that's the best way to approach it and it becomes a true partnership as opposed to just a paying gig for them. Then furthermore to support artists we've incorporated their new music into our playlist, so we love that if they're coming over to stay with us or for the event, they'll hear their new music within our playlist. Baltin: I have to know for each of you, who's the dream artist to have in? Dolkas: The first thing that came to mind is Sting. He's so involved in wellness. I've been a fan, since my parents are massive fans, I've seen him live so many times. So I think doing an amazing stripped-down sunset, rooftop session with Sting sounds pretty iconic. De Lowe: I'll answer a different way with a more random artist. Are you familiar with The Geographers? It was a band that I listened to a lot in a certain period of my life. And Casey came to me and said, "I just landed these guys. What do you think?" I'm like, "Oh my God, I can't believe that. That brings back so many memories.' It was so fun to go and experience it. Dolkas: We actually had them perform at Santa Monica Proper rooftop, which just fit the mold -- summer sunset, ocean as the backdrop, palm trees turn into silhouettes. So that music just definitely fit that energy. And then he was actually going to be at South by Southwest. So, because that was successful, we had him again at the Austin location. And that's something that we love to do as well since we build relationships with these artists. We're able to plug them in in each of our locations. Baltin: How many shows do you guys do per summer? Dolkas: I would say a couple a month. There are two different ways to approach. There are these bigger moments that we have, which are under Proper Presents. But additionally, we also have our ongoing repeatable series, which is every Friday and Saturday, for example, with local artists. So, in addition to these bigger moments with Proper Presents, we also support the local artists in the local communities, which is a few times a week. Baltin: What do you look for in the local artists? Dolkas: It caters to the local communities, community being a major pillar of ours. So, for example, we have an incredible vinyl -based series at Downtown LA Proper in Calaverde, as opposed to Palma at Santa Monica Proper. We just did an amazing series called Women on Wax, which is an all-female vinyl program. And then furthermore, we actually encourage guests to provide vinyl's to those who lost their vinyl collections in the fires. So, we added a philanthropic angle to it as well. Any sort of hook or theme, just to keep it fresh.
