Light aircraft crashes into ocean at Durban North Beach, search for missing pilot ongoing
The aircraft formed part of an airshow taking place at Virginia Airport on the sidelines of the Next Generation of Aviation Professionals (NGAP) Global Summit 2025.
ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said Paramedics are on the beach together with SAPS and Metro Police Search and Rescue as well as NSRI trying to locate the missing pilot.
MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma has announced that he was also at the scene.
Meanwhile, the SA Civil Aviation Authority has confirmed in a statement that the accident occurred just before 2pm.
"It happened apparently when the ZS-AEC Extra 300 aircraft that was performing its final display crashed into the sea. We are comforted by the announcement that the Accident and Incident Investigations Division (AIID) has taken over and will be conducting an investigation," said the aviation authority.

Search continues for missing pilot Andrew Blackwood-Murray
The Extra 300 aircraft (registration ZS-AEC) crashed into the sea while performing its final display. The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) says the investigation into the horrific plane crash, leaving pilot 61-year-old Andrew Blackwood-Murray missing, is continuing. The accident occurred just before 2pm on Thursday, when the ZS-AEC Extra 300 aircraft that was performing its final display crashed into the sea. Rescue Video footage circulated on social media showed the light aircraft looping in the sky before plummeting towards the ocean and skidding for a distance. Emergency services, including the ALS Paramedics, the South African Police Service (Saps) and the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), rushed to the scene of the incident in front of Suncoast Beach. Tragic Sacaa spokesperson Sisa Majola said they are saddened by the tragic accident. 'The Accident and Incident Investigations Division (AIID), confirmed that the incident occurred at approximately 13:45 when an Extra 300 aircraft (registration ZS-AEC) crashed into the sea while performing its final display. Emergency medical services and law enforcement responded immediately to the scene. A search and rescue operation commenced shortly after the crash and is ongoing,' Majola said. NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said since the early hours of Friday morning, from first light, metro police, eThekwini municipal lifeguards, and the Saps continued to recover wreckage washed ashore overnight. 'Ethekwini municipal lifeguards have deployed lifeguards and resources to search out to sea in an ongoing search and to recover wreckage beyond the backbreaker. 'The NSRI rescue craft Spirit of Surfski 6 will be deployed to assist in the ongoing search, and to provide a platform for police divers and metro police divers in ongoing scuba dive search efforts.' ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garith Jamieson said the search has been stopped for the day at Battery/Suncoast Beach. 'Teams will regroup tomorrow [Saturday] morning' Tributes Tributes have been pouring in for Blackwood-Murray following a plane crash in Durban on Thursday. Another Durban beach closed after deadly plane crash
Durban's popular North Beach area has been closed to the public after the horrific plane crash left a veteran pilot missing and prompted a large-scale rescue operation. The crash happened just before 14:00 on Thursday, 14 August, when the ZS-AEC Extra 300 aircraft, performing its final display at an airshow, plunged into the sea in full view of onlookers. Emergency services rushed to the scene after beachgoers reported the plane going down. According to IOL , KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the 61-year-old pilot was demonstrating aerial skills when the aircraft went down. 'Police Search and Rescue teams, working together with private counterparts, have recovered some wreckage of the aircraft, and the search for the pilot is ongoing,' Netshiunda said. The operation, led by Police Search and Rescue divers, also involves the Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre (ARCC), Accident and Incident Investigation Division (AIID), and national aviation authorities. The AIID has launched a formal investigation, with Civil Aviation Authority spokesperson Sisa Majola confirming updates will follow as more information about the plane crash becomes available. In the meantime, the eThekwini Municipality has cordoned off the Durban North beach area, warning residents and visitors to stay away. 'The safety of the public remains our top priority, and we urge all beachgoers to avoid the area while operations are underway,' the City said.
