Malaysia Seeks To Deploy ASEAN Monitoring Team To Thailand-Cambodia Conflict Zone

Barnama2 days ago
PUTRAJAYA, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- Chief of Defence Force Gen Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar said he has requested Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to formally communicate with the Prime Ministers of Thailand and Cambodia to allow Malaysian teams to enter conflict areas in both countries alongside the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT).
He said the AOT comprises representatives from ASEAN member states and will be deployed continuously on the ground to ensure and monitor that there are no violations of the ceasefire agreement.
'This is a heavy task because there is a border of about 840 kilometres that needs to be monitored. For this assignment, we are receiving logistical support from the United States,' he told reporters after being inducted into the Hall of Fame of the National Resilience College (MKN) here today.
He said following the conclusion of the General Border Committee (GBC), the parties involved had agreed under the ceasefire agreement to form an Interim Observer Team (IOT), comprising defence attachés from ASEAN countries.
Mohd Nizam said the team is led by Malaysia's Defence Advisers in Bangkok and Phnom Penh.
'The first step for this team is to hold a briefing in Bangkok for 75 senior officers from Thailand on the measures that need to be taken.
'The same will be done in Phnom Penh tomorrow and the following day before they make visits to the conflict zones,' he said.
Mohd Nizam said the main mandate of the IOT is to ensure that the ceasefire is upheld and to investigate any reported violations from both sides.
Thailand and Cambodia had previously agreed to strictly observe the ceasefire along their shared border, with both sides maintaining their current troop positions and not increasing military strength.

Teo: Media plays vital role in curbing fake news –

KUALA LUMPUR: The role of media practitioners, particularly journalists, is becoming increasingly important in curbing the spread of fake news, which is becoming more prevalent, especially through social media, said Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching. She said trained journalists know their roles and responsibilities as Malaysian citizens to verify the authenticity of any news, thus ensuring the public can differentiate between fake and real news. She added that, as of Aug 1, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had requested 16,110 fake news content be taken down, which is an alarming increase compared to the 5,367 cases in 2023 and 17,245 cases in 2024. "Scammers are now increasingly clever in using artificial intelligence (AI) to generate fake videos and voices to deceive victims," she said at the launch of the 2025 Malaysian Tamil Media Organisation Annual General Meeting here. In addition, she said the public is easily duped when exposed to unverified information that is repeatedly shared across various social media platforms until it is eventually accepted as true. She cited the case of Zara Qairina Mahathir, which went viral after the Form One student died due to alleged bullying in school. "Social media was flooded with various accusations and fake information, including claims that she was put into a washing machine for two hours. Although police confirmed a few days ago that it was fake news, I believe many still think it happened. "So, this trend is unhealthy and dangerous if it is not curbed. It can cause public anxiety, especially since it is related to the safety of school students," she said. In addition, Teo said the Madani Government will continue implementing initiatives to combat fake news by introducing the Artificial Intelligence Fact-check Assistance (AIFA) chatbox by MCMC, which can analyse messages in various languages, including Malay, Mandarin and Tamil.

Timor-Leste nears permanent ASEAN membership ahead of October summit

SEREMBAN: Timor-Leste's permanent membership in ASEAN is now in the documentation phase before its formal admission at the October summit. Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan confirmed the progress during a press briefing today. 'At the upcoming ASEAN Summit in October, there will be a ceremony to welcome Timor-Leste as a permanent member of ASEAN. Right now, it is only at the documentation stage,' he said. He added that Timor-Leste has met most of ASEAN's membership requirements. 'We decided that they should first be admitted as a permanent member, after which ASEAN will assist them in completing the remaining documentation process,' he explained. Mohamad spoke after officiating UMNO Rembau's women, youth, and puteri division meetings. ASEAN reaffirmed its commitment to Timor-Leste's inclusion as the 11th member at the 47th ASEAN Summit in October. The decision aligns with the outcome of the 46th ASEAN Summit. A Joint Communique from the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting on July 9 highlighted support for Timor-Leste's early accession to key economic agreements. 'We look forward to Timor-Leste fulfilling its roles and obligations as an incoming member state and its commitment to upholding ASEAN's fundamental principles,' the statement read. Timor-Leste, Southeast Asia's youngest nation, applied for ASEAN membership in 2011. The country gained independence on May 20, 2002, after years of struggle. Despite delays, Dili has shown strong commitment to meeting ASEAN's membership criteria. In February, Malaysia contributed US$200,000 to the ASEAN Secretariat's Timor-Leste Unit in Jakarta. The funds aim to accelerate the membership process. Malaysia has also provided technical training through the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP). To date, 319 Timor-Leste officials have received training in various fields under the programme. - Bernama

It can cause public anxiety, especially since it is related to the safety of school students,' she said. Zara Qairina was confirmed dead at the Queen Elizabeth I Hospital, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on July 17 after being admitted to the hospital after being found unconscious in a drain near the SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha dormitory, Papar at 4 am on July 16. In addition, Teo said the MADANI Government will continue implementing initiatives to combat fake news by introducing the Artificial Intelligence Fact-check Assistance (AIFA) chatbox by MCMC, which can analyse messages in various languages, including Malay, Mandarin and Tamil. She added that as of July 31, AIFA had received 142,257 messages, averaging 769 fact-checks a day, proving its effectiveness as a rapid tool for information verification and raising digital safety awareness. - Bernama
