Nvidia CEO to defend AI dominance as competition intensifies

When Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang takes the stage this week for the company's annual software developer conference, he will defend his nearly $3 trillion chip company's dominance as pressure mounts on its biggest customers to rein in the costs of artificial intelligence.
Nvidia's conference comes after China's DeepSeek spooked U.S. markets with a competitive chatbot it alleged took less computing power than rivals to create. Nvidia's stock dropped because selling computing power in the form of chips that cost tens of thousands of dollars apiece is what helped Nvidia's revenue more than quadruple over the past three years to $130.5 billion.
At the conference, Nvidia is expected to reveal details of a chip system called Vera Rubin, named for the American astronomer who pioneered the concept of dark matter, with the system expected to go into mass production later this year. Those details will come even as Rubin's predecessor, a chip named after mathematician David Blackwell announced this time last year, is trickling onto the market after production delays that have eaten into Nvidia's margins.
Nvidia's big moneymakers face pressure from technological change as AI markets shift from "training," which is the process of feeding AI models such as chatbots huge troves of data to make them smart, to "inference," which is when the model uses those smarts to produce answers for users. Nvidia, with a market share exceeding 90%, owns the training market but faces competition in inference - and how much market share those competitors take will depend on how inference computing is carried out.
'BIGGER HAMMERS'
Inference computing comes in many forms, from a smartphone that rewords emails to a data center churning out complex analysis of financial documents. Scores of startup companies in Silicon Valley and beyond, as well as Nvidia's traditional rivals such as Advanced Micro Devices, are betting that they can sell chips that will get the job done at lower overall cost - especially electricity costs, where Nvidia's chips consume so much power that AI companies are investigating nuclear reactors to power them.
"They have a hammer, and they're just making bigger hammers," said Bob Beachler, vice president at Untether AI, one of the at least 60 startups trying to unseat Nvidia in inference markets. "They own the (training) market. And so every new chip they come out with has a lot of training baggage."
But Nvidia has argued that a new kind of AI called "reasoning" plays in its favor. Reasoning chatbots think aloud, generating a few lines of text and then reading that text back to themselves to think on the problem more - all of which uses more of the computing power that Nvidia's chips excel at.
"The market for inference is going to be many times bigger than the training market," said Jay Goldberg, chief executive of D2D Advisory, a finance and strategy consulting firm. "As inference becomes more important, their percentage share will be lower, but the total market size and the pool of revenues could be much, much larger."
BEYOND CHATBOTS
Nvidia is also expected to hint at its plans in other computing markets, such as using new AI techniques that improve chatbots to make robots more useful.
One big area of focus will be quantum computing. In January, comments by Huang that the technology was decades away helped crash shares of companies betting on it and spurred Microsoft and Alphabet's Google to come out with claims that the technology is much closer to usefulness. That in turn prompted Nvidia to announce it would devote a full day of its conference to the state of the quantum industry and its own plans.
Huang will deliver the keynote address on Tuesday.
Also on deck is Nvidia's efforts to build a personal computer central processor chip, an endeavor first reported by Reuters and revealed by Nvidia in January.
"It could eat into what's left of the Intel market," said Maribel Lopez, an independent technology industry analyst.

ORLANDO, Florida - U.S. consumer spending's surprising resilience is the main reason the economy has not only avoided recession, but continued to grow at a solid clip. The big question now is whether American households can keep that going, especially with higher, tariff-fueled prices coming down the pike. In the U.S., "the consumer" is king. Consumer spending accounts for around 70% of total economic output, so changes in people's propensity to spend have a direct, outsized influence on the health of the economy. But "the consumer" is, of course, actually millions of people. And when you split them into groups based on income and wealth, it becomes clear that total spending disproportionately comes from the rich. Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, said earlier this year that the richest 10% of Americans, those earning at least $250,000 a year, now account for half of all consumer spending. That's a record. Thirty years ago, the richest 10% accounted for 36% of all consumer spending. A Boston Fed paper last week backed up Zandi's findings, concluding that the strength of aggregate consumer spending in the last three years is due to high-income earners. But the authors suggest high-income consumers have a reasonable cushion because they haven't maxed out their credit cards. While the lower-income and middle-income cohorts both saw their credit card debt soar past pre-pandemic totals in the last few years, wealthier Americans' credit card debt remains below the 2019 high and well below the level implied by the pre-pandemic trend. So, if necessary, they still have room to borrow to fund their spending. EARNING POWER Spending across the income deciles could also be supported by enhanced earning power. While some indicators show that the U.S. labor market may be softening, annual average earnings growth still rose in July to 3.9%, meaning real wage growth is running at a 1.3% annual pace, depending on what slice of inflation you use. Real annual wage growth has been between 1.0% and 1.8% for over two years, above the average for the decade leading into the COVID-19 health crisis. And overall workers' income may be growing at an even faster rate, according to economists at Bank of America. They calculate that aggregate labor income – number of jobs multiplied by wages multiplied by number of hours worked - increased 5.5% in July on a six-month annualized basis. Most of that growth was driven by higher wages. With household delinquency rates, excluding student loans, cooling off this year, strength in labor income should continue to support consumer spending, they argue. This, in turn, should help the U.S. avoid the recessionary spiral of lower spending begetting layoffs, begetting even lower spending, begetting more job cuts. This is one of the reasons BofA economists retain their out-of-consensus call that the Federal Reserve won't cut interest rates at all this year. FLASHING AMBER? Others are less confident. Zandi at Moody's Analytics warns that a correction on Wall Street would hit the rich hard via the negative wealth effects, "and, given how weak the economy is, push it into recession." The concentration of equity ownership at the top of the U.S. wealth ladder is extreme - the richest 1% in the country owns 50% of stock market assets and the top 10% holds around 90%. Some measures of household spending are already flashing amber. Inflation-adjusted spending as measured by personal consumption expenditures flatlined in the first half of this year. Yet figures on Friday showed that retail sales rose 0.5% in July after an upwardly revised 0.9% gain in June. But then there are tariffs. Companies, not consumers, have borne the brunt of these levies so far. Economists at Goldman Sachs estimate that consumers absorbed only 22% of tariff costs through June, but they reckon that figure could rise to 67% in the months ahead if the Trump administration's expected tariffs are implemented. So there are grounds for both caution and optimism. Much will depend on whether the rich draw in their horns. Taiwan's Foxconn, which rose to become a global tech manufacturing juggernaut by assembling millions of iPhones, can now say its main business is no longer Apple as it takes advantage of the AI-boom to diversify its income. Its revenue from making AI servers and other cloud and networking products, including for major customer Nvidia , surpassed smart consumer products such as iPhones for the first time in the second quarter, marking the culmination of a shift that began years ago and has swept through Taiwan's tech industry. Foxconn's heavy reliance on the smartphone business has long been viewed by investors as a significant risk, as demand growth for new iPhones has gradually weakened since they were first introduced nearly two decades ago, leaving the top iPhone assembler grappling with slowing sales momentum, analysts said. Wary of the risk, Foxconn Chairman Young Liu has been championing new businesses such as AI servers, electric vehicles and semiconductors since taking the top job in 2019. While its expansion into EVs and chips has yet to show a meaningful contribution to its topline, Foxconn's success in AI server manufacturing - the company is Nvidia's biggest server maker - is the result of its early bets before the technology was thrust into the limelight with the advent of ChatGPT in late 2022. Consumer electronics accounted for 35% of Foxconn's total revenue in the second quarter, while cloud and networking business represented 41%. In 2021, consumer electronics represented 54% of its revenue. The firm's prudent wagers years back helped it cultivate a now-prized relationship with the U.S. AI chip firm and other major AI players, analysts said. "The company has been in the business for years, meeting higher quality requirements, diversifying assembly and operations across sites, and pursuing vertical integration,' said Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at TF International Securities. Foxconn began producing reference designs for Nvidia's graphics cards around 2002 and started making general-purpose servers for cloud service providers' data centres as early as around 2009. Its AI server business with Nvidia is in many ways the culmination of that history, analysts said. Foxconn says it is now one of the world's largest suppliers of both general-purpose and AI servers, with a market share of nearly 40% in each. The company has also shown a willingness to commit investment to a project at an earlier stage than other companies, Kuo said, citing its past investments for Apple and similar moves for Nvidia. 'In long-term partnerships, Foxconn is more willing to take the initiative,' he said. Foxconn's plan to build factories in Houston, Texas — part of Nvidia's $500 billion U.S. investment plan — and in Mexico to produce AI servers for the U.S. client underscores this strategy, analysts said. Foxconn now expects its AI server revenue would grow more than 170% in the third quarter year-on-year. Foxconn and Nvidia declined to comment. Apple did not respond to request for comment. BROADER SHIFT The shift at Foxconn mirrors a broader trend in Taiwan's technology sector, where companies once centred on consumer electronics — such as Foxconn with iPhones, and Quanta Computer and Wistron Corp with notebooks — are now investing heavily in AI servers. Nvidia partner Wistron's revenue for January to July rose 92.7%, while Quanta's grew 65.6% in the same period. "The monthly sales jump for Taiwan ODMs in the first half of 2025 is evidence of this trend,' said Robert Cheng, head of Asia technology hardware research at BofA Global Research, referring to original design manufacturers like Foxconn that contract manufacture products for their clients. Their fast transition into AI servers is also the result of Taiwanese tech supply chain working closely with U.S. tech giants on data centre infrastructure work for a decade now, according to Chris Wei, industry consultant at Taiwan's Market Intelligence Consulting Institute. He estimates Taiwan accounts for about 80% of global server shipments and more than 90% of AI servers. Cheng agrees. "We think this shift toward AI servers, whatever form it takes, is good for Taiwan's tech industry," he said, noting Taiwanese firms' ability to rapidly shift to cater to changing needs from their customers.
