Wednesday Cheese Curds: Banged-up Packers soldier on in training camp
Most of the offense seems to be injured right now, putting a damper on the Packers' plans to get tuned up before the start of the regular season, a bit of a problem considering they're starting the year with a divisional game against the Lions.
Every team starts the year as a bit of an unknown, but given how hurt the Packers have been to this point in training camp, it feels like this year's team is going to go into the season as even more of an unknown than usual. That's fine from a fan's perspective; it's fun to go in a little bit blind. But it has to be exasperating for head coach Matt LaFleur and general manager Brian Gutekunst.
How can you know what you've got on your team if your team is so injured it can't figure itself out? It's hard to believe the Packers are getting a ton of decent evaluation reps from their passing game right now with Jordan Love and most of the receivers hurt. At least, for now, the offensive line is relatively untouched.
Again, for now. Who knows what a week of joint practices with the Indianapolis Colts will bring?

Surprise AFC East Team Joins Bills In Colin Cowherd's Playoff Predictions
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Opening night of the NFL season is right around the corner. In just three short weeks, the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles will kick off the NFL season. Seventeen games for each team will shape the playoff field and one analyst believes that two teams will represent the AFC East during the postseason. FOXBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS - JANUARY 5: James Cook #4 of the Buffalo Bills rushes with the ball against the New England Patriots during the first quarter at the Gillette Stadium on January 5, 2025 in Foxborough,... FOXBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS - JANUARY 5: James Cook #4 of the Buffalo Bills rushes with the ball against the New England Patriots during the first quarter at the Gillette Stadium on January 5, 2025 in Foxborough, Massachusetts. The Patriots won 23-16. MoreWhile revealing his season predictions on his daily show, "The Herd," Fox Sports' Colin Cowherd predicted both the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots will reach the playoffs. "Bills are gonna win it. Patriots are my most improved team in the NFL," Cowherd said when discussing the division. They'll be a wild card team. They've had a very good camp," he said when discussing New England. .@colincowherd lays out the winners and losers in his FINAL NFL Playoff predictions. — Herd w/Colin Cowherd (@TheHerd) August 13, 2025 The Patriots may have very well had the best offseason of any team in the NFL. That started with the hire of well-respected head coach and former New England player Mike Vrabel. Vrabel has a reputation for playing hard-nosed, smash-mouth football and that is exactly what the Patriots needed after a 4-13 season under Jerrod Mayo. Mike Vrabel's final answer today: 'We're going to be moving. We're going to demand effort and finish. People ask what non-negotiables are — our effort and our finish is going to be the contract we make with our teammates … Time to get to work.' — Mike Reiss (@MikeReiss) January 13, 2025 As for the Bills, they have the reigning MVP in Josh Allen and are expected to be among the best teams not only in the AFC, but in the entire league. A postseason appearance for Buffalo would be its seventh straight trip to the playoffs and eighth trip in the last nine seasons. For New England, a postseason birth would be just its second since the departure of Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady. If any head coach can get the Patriots back to relevancy, it is Vrabel. It would not be surprising in the slightest to see them go 10-7 this season. More NFL: Patriots Announcement Seen as Precursor to Shake-Up in Backfield

Chiefs' Rashee Rice expected to play first 4 games after NFL hearing scheduled: Source
Kansas City Chiefs receiver Rashee Rice is scheduled to have an NFL disciplinary hearing on Tuesday, Sept. 30, meaning he's expected to be able to play the first four games of the season, a source confirmed to The Athletic. ESPN's Adam Schefter was first to report the news of Rice's hearing on Thursday. Because of the timing of his NFL hearing, Rice now should be able to play in the Chiefs' first four games. They are: Rice, 25, faces a potential suspension this season because of his role in a March 2024 high-speed car crash in Dallas. He was sentenced last month to five years of probation and 30 days in jail after pleading guilty to two third-degree felony charges. The NFL waits until all legal matters are settled before determining player suspensions under the league's personal conduct policy. Advertisement Police reports indicated Rice was driving 119 mph in a Lamborghini Urus just before crashing and causing a chain reaction on a Dallas highway. Rice also didn't check on other victims and fled the scene on foot. In a statement from his attorney, Royce West, in July, Rice said he'd had 'a lot of sleepless nights thinking about the damages my actions caused.' 'I will continue working within my means to make sure that everyone impacted will be made whole,' Rice said in the statement. As part of the plea agreement with the Dallas County District Attorney's Office, Rice had to pay restitution to all the victims for their out-of-pocket medical expenses before his plea — an amount that added up to $115,481.91. However, an attorney for one of the victims said last month that Rice has yet to pay back $1 million promised in an agreed-upon settlement stemming from a civil suit. A 2023 second-round pick out of SMU, Rice had 24 catches for 288 yards with two touchdowns in four games last season before suffering a season-ending knee injury. He emerged late in 2023 as the Chiefs' top receiving threat, finishing with 79 catches for 938 yards. Rice has been working at full strength in training camp following offseason rehab for his knee. The "Honolulu Blue wave" phenomenon, a reference to the team's signature color, has seen a surge in jersey sales, heightened social media activity and now a boost in ticket interest. The 2024-2025 season was the best in franchise history with an ending record of 15-2, a franchise record for wins, and saw them secure the NFC's No. 1 seed and a first-round bye. The Lions also had their best start since 1934. Going into the 2025 season, the Lions are the No. 2 seed in the NFC North. $131.82. That was the average NFL ticket price last regular season, up 9% from $120.94 the season before. What To Watch For If NFL sees a boost in broadcast viewers, too. The start of the 2024 season brought a viewership surge that shot the league to a nine-year high in television ratings, averaging 18.6 million viewers across the first three weeks. The viewership number was a significant boost from 2023's season's average of 17.9 million, which was itself the highest since 2015. The surge was attributed largely to the "Taylor Swift effect"—interest in her relationship with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce—bringing an influx of women and girls to the sport. The "Swift bump" increased viewership, jersey sales, and social media engagement. Other factors credited with contributing to the surge include the league's efforts to boost fan engagement, like licensing games to streaming services, the rise of sports betting and more participation in fantasy football.
