Barca's planned Camp Nou return in August scrapped
The Catalan giants had planned to play a friendly match on August 10 as the first game in their stadium after two years of construction work, but blamed difficulty in obtaining a license to partially open the stadium for their decision.
'Barcelona informs that the first match back at the Spotify Camp Nou has been suspended,' said the club in a statement.
'Because of the magnitude of the work done it was impossible to meet all the requirements demanded by the regulations governing the granting of the first occupancy license, despite the club's willingness to open Spotify Camp Nou in sections.'
The first match at the Camp Nou is now set to be the La Liga game against Valencia on September 13 or 14, with Barca's first three league matches away from home.
However Barcelona did not state whether they can guarantee they will be able to open the stadium for the fixture, or potentially a home Champions League tie before then.
Barca said the friendly they had planned, reported to be against Italian side Como, will take place instead at the Johan Cruyff stadium beside their training ground.
Barcelona have played at the Olympic Stadium on the city's Montjuic hill over the past two seasons during the development at the Camp Nou.
The club initially planned to return to the Camp Nou in November 2024 to mark the club's 125th anniversary but the stadium opening has been repeatedly delayed.
Capacity at the Camp Nou will be around 60,000 until works are eventually completed, planned to be next summer, with the stadium expanded to 105,000 seats.
Barcelona are estimated to be paying 1.5 billion euros ($1.75 billion) for the Camp Nou rebuild project.

German great Mueller signs with MLS Whitecaps

He retired from international duty in 2024, having won the World Cup with Germany in 2014. He finished his international career with 131 caps, scoring 45 goals. There had been brief speculation that he would land with Los Angeles FC, but the Whitecaps announcement came on the same day that LAFC were expected to confirm the signing of South Korean star Son Heung-min.

Isak to return to training with Newcastle
INA - SOURCES Alexander Isak is returning to the UK and is set to resume training with Newcastle United following working individually at Real Sociedad. Isak has been training alone at his former club's Zubieta Facilities in the Basque country, but is now set to return to Newcastle's base – although the majority of the rest of the first team squad are currently on a pre-season tour in Asia. The news of Isak's return comes the day after The Athletic reported that Newcastle had rejected a formal bid from Liverpool of £110million for the Sweden international, who wants to leave St James' Park this summer. Liverpool's stance is that they are not inclined to bid again after the quick rebuttal to their first offer, but their interest in the player is ongoing. The Premier League champions initially made an informal approach to Newcastle, expressing interest in doing a deal in the region of £120m, as reported by The Athleticon July 15. Newcastle, who will compete in the Champions League next season, have tried to tie Isak to an improved contract which would include a release clause next summer, and attempted to convince him to stay through his senior team-mates. The forward, however, has not changed his stance, which has been made clear to the club for some time. Isak has been absent from Newcastle's pre-season tour of Asia, with sources, speaking anonymously as they were not authorised to do so publicly, saying the decision was the player's preference. The club cited a minor thigh problem for his absence.

Verstappen and Wolff laugh off Sardinia holiday stories
Spa-Francorchamps – Red Bull driver Max Verstappen and Mercedes boss Toto Wolff on Thursday laughed off suggestions they held talks about a potential team move while both happened to be on holiday at the same time in Sardinia ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix. The pair were reported to have been seen and photographed together on the Italian island following the British Grand Prix and after the shock sacking of Red Bull team boss Christian Horner. But Verstappen told reporters that he was 'swimming in the ocean at the time' and Wolff said he was impressed that people were producing 'photo collages', and that it was coincidental they were both in Sardinia. 'Well, I was swimming in the ocean at the time,' said Verstappen of the claims before dismissing them. 'I don't really care about those things. 'Because I went on holiday with my friends, my family, and when other people also are there at the same time, that can happen. I mean, there are more people on the island than just me and Toto and the family. 'If you go to the same island, that can happen.' Wolff conceded it was unlikely Verstappen would be joining Mercedes after rumours had abounded in recent weeks about a shock team move. 'The direction of travel is definitely that we want to continue with George (Russell) and Kimi (Antonelli). That is the absolute priority,' he said. 'But you can't look past someone like Max and the plans he has for the future. We did that, but I don't think there will be any big surprises. 'What is new is that people are doing photo collages with aeroplanes. We've never had that before! 'But if you spend your holidays close to each other, it doesn't mean that you're going to work together in Formula One. We have always got along well and by chance we like to spend our holidays at the same places.'
