U.S. Financial Confidence Continues to Drop: New Data from the Mutual of Omaha Protection Index Report Underscores Taking Timely Action to Proof the Futures of Americans

Business Wire2 hours ago
OMAHA, Neb.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--With the goal to empower Americans to protect what matters the most and achieve their financial goals, Mutual of Omaha reveals the findings from its Protection Index Report, to mark National Financial Awareness Day today. The proprietary research study*, which highlights a critical need to address both short-term concerns and long-term financial confidence, reinforces Mutual of Omaha's commitment to clear, approachable advice that helps Americans better understand and protect their financial well-being.
'We know financial planning can get overwhelming, especially when we try to juggle today's priorities with tomorrow's goals,' said Jennifer Wulf, Vice President, Consumer Insights and Marketing Strategy for Mutual of Omaha. 'That belief is at the core of the Protection Index Report. We want to understand the minds of today's American consumer, to meet them where they are and deliver advice and solutions that address their needs.'
Most Americans Say They are Not Ready for the Future
Despite some generational optimism about the future, overall confidence in financial protection is declining, particularly among the most vulnerable:
Only 23% of Americans currently feel financially protected, down from 24% in 2023.
17% feel their protection is threatened, up from 13% just two years ago.
Many respondents cite difficulty saving, lack of clear strategies, and rising costs as obstacles.
Gen Z Feels Good About the Future, Boomers are More Hesitant
Among the generations, 87% of consumers overall, and 92% of Boomers, say they feel a responsibility to protect their family's financial future. Particularly, consumers cited life insurance, burial policies and savings for their children as the top protection priorities.
Gen Z, the second youngest generation born between 1996-2010, is at the very beginning of their careers and early stages of adulthood. Despite low current confidence likely due to this, the study found that Gen Zers expressed the highest optimism about being financially prepared in 10 years.
Gen Z is also significantly more likely to say they haven't even started thinking about their financial future, despite feeling more confident compared to other generations when asked about their retirement savings and future.
Millennials and Gen X fall between, with younger Millennials often struggling with debt and older Gen Xers beginning to prioritize retirement.
'We found that Gen Z's optimism stands in stark contrast to other generations. While we can speculate whether it's the promise of long careers ahead of them or the anticipation of the Great Wealth Transfer, one thing is certain, their confidence is real. And, that's encouraging,' said Nate Hobson, Mutual of Omaha National Advisor Sales Director. 'For generations, Mutual of Omaha has been a trusted partner for every stage of life. While we remain committed to helping all generations protect their finances, we have an exciting opportunity to help Gen Z turn their optimism into action.'
The Gap Between Hope and Belief Is Wide
60% of respondents want to believe they'd avoid financial crisis if seriously ill or injured, but only 49% believe that's true.
The gap is especially wide among women and lower-income respondents, both of whom report lower belief in crisis readiness.
Respondents named inflation, medical costs, and the high cost of insurance as key obstacles.
As a Millennial woman herself, Sarah Whitmore, Mutual of Omaha Financial Advisor added, 'Financial protection is more than the product offerings, it's about confidence. Whether Gen Z or a Boomer, our goal is to support all Americans, including women who are more likely to express concerns about debt, savings, and future security, by arming them with the right advice and resources to feel protected.'

America's Top Sandwich Spots, According to Reviews

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. August marks National Sandwich Month and Yelp, the online directory, has marked the occasion with a list of the top 100 sandwich shops in the United States. Why It Matters Sandwiches have long been a cornerstone in American culinary culture. According to U.S. Foods, people across the U.S. eat an estimated 300 million sandwiches every day. A survey of 2,000 Americans, commissioned in the fall of 2024 by lunch and deli meat brand Buddig and conducted by Talker Research, found that grilled cheese sandwiches were the favorite of 42 percent of people, with chicken sandwiches coming in at a close second for 40 percent. Stock image of an Italian combo sandwich. Stock image of an Italian combo sandwich. Paul Chinn/San Francisco Chronicle via AP What To Know The list is Yelp's first Top 100 list of sandwich spots. The crowd-sourced review site explained its methodology: "This is an all-time list of the Top 100 Sandwich Shops in the U.S. according to Yelp. We identified businesses in the sandwich category on Yelp, then ranked those spots using a number of factors, including the total volume and ratings of reviews." The list revealed multiple trends about sandwich consumption. Shops that specialize in the bánh mì, a Vietnamese specialty, appeared in multiple positions, as did vegan, veggie and gluten-free sandwich spots. Newsweek spoke with Owen Han, author of the cookbook Stacked: The Art of the Perfect Sandwich and culinary content creator, about the ranking. Han's sandwich videos have proved immensely popular over the years, and he regularly shares videos making sandwiches to TikTok, where he has more than 4 million followers. "The 2025 Yelp Top 100 Sandwich Shops list shows that America's sandwich culture is in a golden age of creativity and diversity," Han said by email. "The classic deli sub and the simple grilled cheese are still celebrated, but they now share the stage with globally inspired flavors, plant-based reinventions and elevated ingredient choices like artisanal breads, house-made sauces and seasonal produce." One feature of the list is transcending state loyalties, with Chicago-style sandwiches popular in Florida, Philly cheesesteaks proving to be a favorite in Texas, and New Orleans muffulettas popping up in Missouri. "Regional pride is strong," Han said. "A po'boy in Louisiana doesn't look anything like a bánh mì in California or a biscuit sandwich in Texas, yet customers are eager to cross flavor borders. Sandwiches have become both a comfort food and a culinary playground, reflecting the broader American dining trend toward authenticity, craft and storytelling. While all the trends matter, global influences are the most transformative for the future." "They expand the definition of what a sandwich can be," he said, adding that they "introducing new flavor profiles, cooking techniques and ingredient combinations to mainstream audiences. "This cross-pollination of ideas—a Cuban medianoche in Seattle, a tikka masala wrap in New York, a kimchi grilled cheese in L.A.—keeps the category evolving in exciting ways. Plant-based innovation is a close second, as it's not just a dietary niche anymore; it's becoming part of the default menu offering. Together, these two forces are pushing sandwiches from familiar lunch fare into a dynamic, chef-driven cuisine that resonates with both tradition and modern tastes." Personalized Learning in High School Helps Prepare Students for the Workforce

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Are employers settling for better-than-nothing applicants to fill their entry-level positions? In a recent J. Wallin Opinion survey of businesses large and small across the U.S., 43 percent said that they have lowered their hiring standards due to reduced skill levels – and of those, 57 percent feel it has negatively affected their business. 1 Since only 50 percent of high school seniors plan to go to a four-year college, high schools must prepare students for the workforce as well as post-secondary education Share 'We believe it's important that teens learn basic workplace skills to help them land and keep a job,' said Shellie Hanes, superintendent at Learn4Life, a network of public high schools that personalize learning to individual students' needs, strengths and goals. 'Since only 50 percent of high school seniors plan to go to a four-year college 2, high schools must prepare students for the workforce as well as post-secondary education.' While earning their diplomas, all Learn4Life students complete a 10-week professional skills course that has them exploring career goals and learning basic computing, resume preparation and interview etiquette. Once completed, students move on to workforce development activities with structured, hands-on experiences that allow them to discover career pathways, develop essential skills and transition smoothly into a career or higher education. August is Personal Learning Month, created to promote the idea of teaching students in the way each learns best, with opportunities to learn job and life skills that will serve them after high school. More than 90 percent of employers said that personalized learning would help produce better-prepared candidates for entry-level positions. 3 'Many students lacked organizational skills, struggled with grammar, had no idea how to fill out a job application, handle a job interview or understand the basics of appropriate work behavior,' Hanes added. 'We offer courses so teens can acquire the skills to succeed in whatever job they want to pursue. Plus, many graduate with industry-recognized certifications – saving them thousands of dollars and giving them an advantage over other recent grads.' Employers cite these basic skills that entry-level workers are least likely to have 4: Work ethic/dependability Time management Problem-solving skills People skills with other employees Interpersonal skills with clients Punctuality Leadership Hanes said Learn4Life addresses those skills and teaches students about workplace communication, career readiness, employability skills, leadership and even financial literacy. 'By developing a personalized learning plan for each student, we can help them grow in areas they are good at and spend a little extra time on the skills they're lacking,' she explained. 'Because they are regularly communicating directly with their teachers and school counselors, they become comfortable speaking with adults and responding to what is expected of them.' Students then can move on to a specific CTE pathway where they are introduced to workplace competencies and receive hands-on learning– with options like computer programming, foodservice, healthcare, construction, veterinary medicine, robotics, construction and cyber-security. They earn industry-recognized certifications so they can secure internships, apprenticeships or jobs. One student, Jackie R., had dropped out of school to take care of her two children. Fortunately, she found Learn4Life, where the flexibility and personalized support helped her catch up on credits. She started in a dual-enrollment certified nursing assistant (CNA) program, balancing hands-on clinicals, academic work and motherhood with the help of her teachers and a close-knit group of classmates. 'Before I came to this school, I never envisioned being anybody. And now I know I can be somebody,' Jackie said, smiling.
