Dwayne Johnson finally hugs Jelly Roll years after his music helped him through 'hard' time

Perth Now02-07-2025
Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson has thanked Jelly Roll for helping him through a "very hard" time.
The WWE legend turned Hollywood megastar has shared a video of the moment he finally met and hugged the Only hitmaker, whose song "moved" him around 2017 when he was "struggling" with his mental health.
Alongside a video of the pair hugging and saying they loved each other, The Rock wrote: "A brotherly hug almost 10 years in the making...
"Several years ago (roughly 2017) I was going through a very hard thing at the time, I was struggling.
"My mental wellness turned into my mental hellness. Many of you know the drill, you put on 'the face,' show up to work, smile and get through it.
"Perhaps not the healthiest thing to do, but it's what I was used to doing at the time.
"Then a song came on through my headphones one morning on a random shuffle playlist. 'Only' from Jelly Roll. The lyrics rocked me. Hard core."
In the emotional song, Jelly - who is also a huge WWE fan - sings: "What if the darkness inside of me has finally taken my soul?/What if the angels in heaven were sent to take me home?
"Would they fight through the demons that I have in my life?/Lord, I'm believing eventually see the light."
The Fast and Furious actor recalled how he was moved "so much" that he got in touch with the singer at the time, and shared how "this song of yours is helping me through some stuff I'm dealing with". and that he "just called to say thank you".
He continued: "Our bond was born."
When the pair finally met in person recently, Dwayne gave Jelly a gift which he admitted might seem "insignificant to the world", but would mean a lot to Jelly.
He gave the singer an old postcard of the former Alamo Plaza motel in South Nashville, where Jelly is from.
Dwayne explained: "When I was 15yrs I was forced (family was evicted) to leave Hawaii and make it to Nashville to live with my dad.
"That didn't work out so I wound up living with a stranger in this little spot on Murfreesboro Road that has since been torn down and no longer there.
"Downtown Bruno was that stranger's name and to this day, he's one of my best and most special friends. Just like Jelly. A very special friend."
In the Instagram video, Jelly admitted that the postcard - which was signed by The Rock - "is real old school Nashville history".
Dwayne added in the caption: "Every once in a while we all get sliced up by life, but it's amazing to see what kind of blessings and people that God and the universe will put in our lives to help us heal through our pain."

Where to get the BEST toasties in Perth

Fremantle Why is stuff between two slices of bread so damn good? This is the question you will be pondering as you tuck into one of the excellent sandwiches in the delightful cafe in Fremantle's West End. The kimchi and cheese is a particular favourite with kimchi, provolone, cheddar and swiss cheese, and given a little extra kick with kimchi salt. Out of this world. Or maybe you're more inclined towards the roasted mushroom toastie with bechamel and mozzarella. We're hungry just thinking about it. Myaree At Home Coffee Co. Credit: Instagram If you are after comfort food with a twist (and really good coffee), then this slick cafe has you covered. It is known for its excellent selection of toasties, including the classic ham and cheese and the nori and cheese, in addition to an menu full of drool-worthy Japanese-inspired cafe dishes like mushroom congee. The coffee is damn fine, too. Perth and Victoria Park Toastface grillah. Credit: supplied / supplied There is nothing wrong with perfecting a classic and that's what this much loved sandwich spot has done. Since first opening its doors in 2013, Toastface has slung out more melted cheese toasties than most of us have had hot dinners. Its classic - a grilled cheddar cheese for an extremely reasonable $6 - is a prime example of why sometimes basic is best. Fremantle Little Sister Cheese Toastie. Credit: Instagram We all know and love Kakulas Sister, so it's worth getting to know Little Sister, a deli that started out as a counter inside the beloved international grocer before branching out next door. Pop in for some bougie cheese, or charuterie, and while you're at it, grab a cheese toastie for lunch. Its classic involves eight cheeses, free range ham, onion jam and French butter. Delicious. Woodlands Oh So Deli. Credit: Facebook These guys know sandwich. From their chicken katsu sanger (yum) to their crispy Korean Chicken covered in gochujang and honey glaze (double yum) the worst thing about this place is choosing what to order. And if you're like 'that's all very well, but what's their toastie game like', the answer is: strong. Think smoked pastrami brisket with sauerkraut, swiss cheese, pickles and mustard. Or smoked ham, mojo pork swiss cheese, spicy pickles, pickled pinapple, jalapeno with honey mustard aioli. All toasted for a delicious winter lunch.

Cardi B's latest tune samples this Jay-Z classic

Cardi B has unleashed Imaginary Playerz, the second single from her long-awaited second studio album Am I The Drama?. Boasting a sample of Jay-Z's 1997 classic Imaginary Player, the tune was produced by DJ SwanQo, Sean Island, and OctaneThisThatGas, and is a swagger-soaked anthem that doubles down on Cardi's signature bravado. Telling fans about getting the music mogul's seal of approval, Cardi spilled on X Space this week: 'I was so happy because you guys understand, the song is kinda long… This song is like a staple for me and I had to get it approved by the one and only. 'It's a very hip-hop record and I hope you guys enjoy it.' It arrives with a cinematic companion video co-directed by Cardi herself alongside longtime creative partner Patience Foster. Through her joint venture, she's already sold out multiple limited-edition merch box sets, including a headline-grabbing WWE collaboration. The newly launched Imaginary Playerz box set and alternate album cover art are available now - but only in limited quantities at The WWE tie-in isn't just for show. Cardi made her hosting debut at SummerSlam on August 2, where she previewed new music and sent fans into a frenzy. That same week, she dropped Outside, the first single from Am I The Drama?, which debuted in the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 - her 13th Top 10 hit - and soared to #1 on Apple Music, marking her first chart-topper since the multi-platinum Up. Cardi's new era kicked off with a bang at the Cannes Spotify Beach Party in June, where she performed Outside live for the first time. Am I The Drama? is released on September 19.

The fake heiress, the Instagram shoot and the abandoned bunnies

New York: It was a scene befitting of a millennial influencer: the fake heiress known as Anna Delvey posing outside a Tribeca subway station with two bunnies on leashes — and an ankle monitor on her tanned leg. But not long after, some bunnies that had been procured for the photo shoot with the would-be socialite were abandoned in Prospect Park in Brooklyn, unleashing a torrent of backlash towards the real Anna Sorokin, who in an interview with The New York Times on Monday said she was not responsible for procuring the rabbits and that she was 'horrified' when she learned that they had been ditched. 'I felt ashamed and embarrassed to be associated with it,' Sorokin, 34, said. Sorokin, who pretended to be a wealthy German heiress and landed in prison for nearly four years for swindling Manhattan's elite, spent 18 months behind bars in immigration detention for overstaying her visa. She has filled her time lately with photo shoots, publicity stunts and a stint on Dancing With the Stars. On August 3, Sorokin posted the photo shoot with the bunnies on a New York City footpath. The bunny cradled in Sorokin's arms was an 18-month-old Harlequin lop named Parker. But the next day, Terry Chao, a web specialist who blogs about vegan causes in her spare time, spotted Parker in Prospect Park, recognising the rabbit from a Facebook group where some bunnies had recently been listed as available for adoption. Parker had been hiding in bushes near the Endale Arch on August 4, not far from a cardboard box, said Chao, the online sleuth who helped rescue the rabbit and care for two others that had been part of the photo shoot. She and several other people used a pen with wire gates to help corral the bunnies. Chao said she had also recognised the cardboard box from Sorokin's Instagram feed and that it also had a Yonkers address on it, possibly connecting it to the family who put the bunnies up for adoption. The most obvious giveaway, Chao said, was that someone who had worked on the shoot had earlier reached out to her to scout out available bunnies.
