5 causes for concern as Eagles enter training camp

Yahoo22-07-2025
After months of waiting, the Eagles have returned to the NovaCare Complex to kick off their 2025 season with a critical training camp. Philadelphia has one of the best rosters in the NFL with few holes or personnel deficits, and they'll hit the practice field entirely motivated after an offseason of slights and trash talk from looming opponents.
With training camp just hours away, we're looking at five causes for concern this season for the defending Super Bowl champions.
Super Bowl
In NFL history, just nine teams have won back-to-back Super Bowls. The most recent team to win it back-to-back? The Chiefs, who won it all in 2022 and 2023. Philadelphia won the Super Bowl, so a hangover isn't the concern, but the ability to take the opposing team's best shot is something to monitor. Since 2004, 14 Super Bowl winners have returned to the playoffs, while five teams have missed the playoffs, including the 2022 Rams, who went 5-12 and missed the postseason.
Saquon Barkley's health
Before joining the Eagles, Saquon Barkley tore his ACL in 2020 and played just two games. That was the only season he failed to play in at least 13. A perceived history of 'injury' is overrated, but Barkley led the NFL with 378 touches last year, 4th-most in Eagles history. There was no drop-off during the postseason, but what happens this season, and how can Philadelphia avoid repeating history and a decline in production?
Lack of dependable third WR
Philadelphia is likely to carry four or five wide receivers on the depth chart, and a critical issue could be the lack of a reliable third wide receiver. Ainias Smith and Johnny Wilson were both draft picks who contributed on offense as rookies in 2024. Elijah Cooks and Danny Gray were on the practice squad last season. Cooks offers size at 6-4, 215 pounds. The player Eagles fans would prefer to break out is Jahan Dotson. Dotson was acquired just before the start of the 2024 season, so this marks the first Training Camp in Philadelphia for the former first-round pick out of Penn State. Dotson had a season-best 94 yards on seven catches in the regular-season finale, then scored his first touchdown as an Eagle in the Wild Card win over Green Bay.
The Eagles' young group of defenders
The defense has undergone an overhaul after defensive tackle Milton Williams (New England), Josh Sweat (Arizona), cornerback Darius Slay (Pittsburgh), cornerback Isaiah Rodgers (Minnesota), and linebacker Oren Burks (Cincinnati) all departed via free agency.
OLB Nolan Smith: 24DT Jordan Davis: 25DT Jalen Carter: 24OLB Jalyx Hunt: 24LB Jihaad Campbell: 21LB Zack Baun: 28NCB Cooper DeJean: 22CB Quinyon Mitchell: 24CB Kelee Ringo: 23S Reed Blankenship: 26S Drew Mukuba: 22
The Eagles added ten talented rookies on NFL draft weekend. After watching 12 players depart in free agency, Roseman added two dynamic SEC linebackers, an All-American pass rusher, three offensive linemen, and an accomplished quarterback from Philadelphia. Of the list of potential Eagles starters, Zach Baun is the elder statesman at 28 years old.
Is Kevin Patullo prepared for this moment?
The Eagles' new offensive coordinator has never called plays in 20-plus years of coaching in college and the NFL.
Patullo has worked with Hurts for four seasons, so he understands his likes, dislikes, strengths, and weaknesses. Patullo also fully grasps the capabilities of running back Saquon Barkley and wide receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. He'll need to hit the ground running.

Jerry Jones urges Cowboys fans not to panic after Micah Parsons' trade request: 'Don't lose any sleep over this'

Jerry Jones talked for a while on Saturday, but had one overall message for Dallas Cowboys fans in the wake of Micah Parsons' trade request: Don't panic. The Cowboys owner told reporters he isn't considering granting Parsons' request and insisted that this was still part of the negotiations for the All-Pro pass-rusher's next contract in Dallas. From The Athletic's Jon Machota: 'I wouldn't be standing here with you if I didn't think we potentially had a great future with Micah (Parsons). We're in good shape. This is negotiation. But make no mistake about it, life has to go on if something happens to me or anybody else. Life does go on.' Jones also reportedly said Parsons' contract offer from March is off the table — "Micah took it off" — and that "relationship is what it is ... I like Micah" when asked if the relationship was salvageable. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] And as for his message to a currently upset Cowboys fanbase, via Nick Harris of the Star-Telegram: 'I would say to our fans, don't lose any sleep over this.' Meanwhile, some of those Cowboys fans were letting Jones know what they thought about the situation: As Jones often likes to note, he's been in this kind of situation before and usually comes out of with a newly extended player, though sometimes at a price a little higher than expected. In a lengthy statement announcing his trade request, Parsons claimed Jones and the Cowboys have been mostly radio silent in response to multiple attempts by his camp to engage them on contract negotiations. Jones and Parsons met in March to discuss their future, but no deal resulted and the two sides are now reported to be wide apart on terms of a possible deal. Parsons has not held out from Cowboys workouts or training camps, though he has missed drills recently due to a back injury. Jones said "I wish the back would get better" in response to the injury, with tongue possibly in cheek. How expensive will Micah Parsons get for the Cowboys? Parsons' first contract after his rookie deal has loomed for years, with the price only going higher as his peers land progressively larger extension. Las Vegas Raiders star Maxx Crosby got a three-year, $106.5 million deal in March, with a $35.5 million average annual value that made him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. Myles Garrett and the Cleveland Browns broke that record days later with a four-year, $160 million deal ($40 million per year). And then Pittsburgh Steelers star T.J. Watt took the record for himself with a three-year, $123 million extension ($41 million per year). At 26 years old, Parsons is younger than all three of those players and has been one of the best defensive players in the NFL since his first game with the Cowboys. Odds are high he's looking to set his own record, but even if he somehow doesn't, it's not going to be cheap for Jones. Parsons is playing this season on the $24 million fifth-year option of his rookie contract and is technically a pending unrestricted free agent, though it can be assumed the Cowboys will hit him with the franchise tag as many times as needed to keep him in Dallas.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones dismisses Micah Parsons' trade request as negotiation talk

OXNARD, Calif. (AP) — Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones does not intend to trade Micah Parsons after the star defensive end said he wants to leave the team amid a breakdown in negotiating a contract extension. 'Surely you guys have been around this stuff and know how to recognize negotiation talk, that type of thing. And so that's where I put that,' Jones said after practice Saturday, one day after Parsons posted on social media to request a trade. No stranger to public and prolonged disputes with standout players, Jones insisted the standoff with Parsons is no different than past situations ranging from alternating approaches by quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb last year to the 1993 in-season holdout by running back Emmitt Smith. 'Well, it's just that you've seen it so often, and you've seen it with other clubs. You go through the process. It's a highly sensitive time when you're guaranteeing somebody almost $200 million, that's sensitive stuff,' Jones said. Parsons remains at training camp, where he has yet to practice because of a back injury. He did not speak to reporters, leaving the field at the same time as Jones was fielding questions for more than 15 minutes. Parsons is going into the final season of his five-year rookie contract and is seeking a new deal that would almost certainly make him the highest-paid defender in NFL history. He could be franchise tagged in 2026 without a contract extension. A first-round draft pick in 2021, Parsons has at least 12 sacks in each of his four seasons with the Cowboys and 52 1/2 for his career. The crux of the disagreement between Parsons and the Cowboys seems to be over the specific nature of talks with Jones during the spring that Parsons did not consider formal negotiations. Jones disagrees, believing they had come together on a deal. 'The key is that we've got an agreement,' Jones said. 'Let's really do understand that we've got an agreement now.' Parsons wrote in his statement that the Cowboys have refused to engage his agent David Mulugheta in the process, which along with remarks by Jones during a July 21 press conference, contributed to his decision to publicly request a trade. Asked if what was discussed in March was still on the table, Jones said, 'Micah took it off. He took it off.' Jones said that he expects Parsons to work off the framework established during the disputed spring talks. 'Now, if we're going to adjust an agreement, then he's a must and I'm a must,' Jones said of Parsons' involvement in future negotiations. Multiple Cowboys players have posted their support for Parsons on social media, with Lamb writing, ' Just pay the man.' Fans shouted their support for Parsons when Jones walked on the field midway through practice, and there was a sustained chant of 'Let's pay Micah!' at the end of Saturday's workout. Jones did not answer directly when asked if he expects Parsons will be on the Cowboys for their season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 4. He later expressed his belief that the current hostility with Parsons will be resolved in a satisfactory manner for all involved. 'I enjoy Micah, but as always, in any relationship, there's different moods at different times of your relationship,' Jones said. 'That's what it is. Don't lose any sleep over it. That's the one thing I would say to our fans, don't lose any sleep over it.' ___ AP NFL:

Sterling Sharpe joins brother Shannon as only siblings in the Pro Football Hall of Fame

Sterling Sharpe stood on the podium a few feet from his bronze bust, took off his new gold jacket and gave it to his fellow Pro Football Hall of Fame brother. Shannon Sharpe had given Sterling his first Super Bowl ring and now big brother was returning the favor on stage after the crowning moment of his football career. 'This is why I played football,' Sterling said, referring to his younger brother, who wrapped his arm around him and had tears streaming down his face. 'This is why I got out of bed; it wasn't work. It was because of this right here. Before I leave you, I want to do two things. The most precious gift I've ever received is the Super Bowl ring. ... I wear this ring because of love. You gave me this not knowing you were going to get another one. And I prayed to God: 'Please, God, let him get another.' God blessed him with two. 'The second thing is, the last time I was here, you said that you were the only pro football player in the Hall of Fame that could say that you were the second-best player in your own family. I agree with that statement, but it would be an extreme privilege. ... for you to be the only player in the Pro Football Hall of Fame with two gold jackets. You see, you have to learn to follow before you can lead.' Eric Allen, Jared Allen and Antonio Gates joined Sterling Sharpe as the Class of 2025 was inducted into football immortality during a ceremony at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium, where the Los Angeles Chargers beat the Detroit Lions 34-7 on Thursday night to kick off the NFL preseason. Sterling Sharpe averaged 85 catches and 1,162 yards, finishing with 65 touchdowns in seven seasons with the Green Bay Packers. The wide receiver was named to five Pro Bowls and earned first-team All-Pro honors three times. A neck injury cut his career short and he waited a long time to get the call from the Hall. Shannon Sharpe, who played tight end for the Denver Broncos and Baltimore Ravens, was inducted in 2011. They are the first brothers in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Jared Allen was the first player among the new class to take the stage after Hall of Fame running back Thurman Thomas led the crowd in singing 'Happy Birthday' to former Bills coach Marv Levy, who turns 100 on Sunday. Wearing his trademark cowboy hat, Allen talked about his motivation for success. 'Why is what makes you different; it's your long game,' he said. 'It's the motivation that drives you to do all necessary action steps to achieve your goal. My why can be summed up in three things: fear, respect and the pursuit of greatness. ... I apply my why to everything in my life, to my walk with Christ, my marriage and being a father.' Jared Allen made five Pro Bowls, was a four-time All-Pro and had 136 sacks in 12 seasons with the Chiefs, Vikings, Bears and Panthers. His final game was Super Bowl 50, a loss by Carolina against Peyton Manning and the Broncos. Eric Allen, a six-time Pro Bowl cornerback who played for the Eagles, Saints and Raiders, was presented by one of his four sons. Allen, who had 54 career interceptions, including eight returned for touchdowns, gave the obligatory 'Fly! Eagles! Fly!' to support the Super Bowl champions who drafted him in 1988. 'I grew up in Philadelphia. I became a man there. I have a special gratitude for the organization,' Allen said. Allen also thanked current Raiders owner Mark Davis, who was in attendance. 'Al Davis had a statement: 'Commitment to excellence,' Allen said. 'It's all over our building in Las Vegas. We are trying to make sure we fulfill that destiny, we fulfill what Al Davis was about.' Gates closed out the day with a 23-minute speech that he began by saying he wouldn't cry, but it included several emotional moments. Gates, who was presented by Chargers owner Dean Spanos, never played a single down of college football yet ended up becoming the 23rd of 382 Hall of Famers who were undrafted by NFL teams. He thanked former Chargers tight ends coach Tim Brewster for discovering him after he led Kent State's basketball team to the Elite Eight. 'Tim Brewster saw something special in me. He was pretty sure that I could make the team. He was adamant that I'd be All-Pro in three years,' Gates said. 'You see, the thing is when switching sports or careers for that matter, it can be life-changing. The unexpected are often the most powerful ones because it can completely redirect your life if you're ready to take advantage and you're ready for the opportunity. Thank you to Coach Tim Brewster and Coach Marty Schottenheimer. They gave me an opportunity to play tight end in the NFL. Because of you, Coach Tim Brewster, NFL teams and NFL scouts will never look at college basketball players the same again.' Gates played all 16 of his NFL seasons with the Chargers, finishing with 955 catches for 11,841 yards and 116 TDs. He made the Pro Bowl eight times and was All-Pro three times, the first in just his second season.
