India and Pakistan to stage separate naval drills

Russia Today3 hours ago
The Indian and Pakistani navies will conduct separate naval exercises in the Arabian Sea on August 11–12, news agency ANI reported on Sunday.
Both nations have issued airspace restriction notifications over their respective maritime zones for the drills, which will happen at around the same time, the report added, quoting Indian defense sources.
'Indian Navy warships will be carrying out exercises in the Arabian Sea on August 11–12. Pakistan Navy has also issued its own NOTAM for similar drills,' a defense source was quoted as saying by the media outlet.
The Indian Navy will carry out its maritime exercises off the coasts of Porbandar and Okha in Gujarat, according to Indian media reports. The Arabian Sea is vital for maritime trade routes and a key focal point for regional security.
The exercises come three months after the South Asian neighbors engaged in a four-day military confrontation. Neither nation used their navy in the conflict, which ended with a ceasefire on May 10.
Last month, the Indian Air Force (IAF) held large-scale military exercises along the India-Pakistan border.
The drills featured key fighter squadrons with frontline jets, including the Sukhoi Su-30, Rafale, and Mirage 2000, as well as air defense systems and critical support infrastructure, according to media reports.
On Saturday, IAF Chief Amar Preet Singh said the Indian armed forces shot down five Pakistani jets and one airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft during the conflict with Pakistan in May. In a speech, he credited the Russian-made S-400 surface-to-air missile system for the hits.
'We have at least five fighters confirmed killed and one large aircraft, which could be an ELINT aircraft or an AEW&C aircraft, which was taken out from a distance of about 300km, which is the largest-ever recorded surface-to-air kill that we can talk about,' Singh said.

Russia and India linked by ‘strong bond'

A top security official in Moscow has called for the strategic partnership between Russia and India to be strengthened, amid tensions between New Delhi and Washington over India's purchases of Russian oil. Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu held talks with Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval in Moscow on Thursday. The top aide to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in the Russian capital to discuss defense and security-related matters. 'Russia and India are linked by strong, trusting, time-tested bonds of friendship,' Shoigu told Doval. 'For our country, the comprehensive strengthening of the special privileged strategic partnership with India, based on mutual respect, equal consideration of each other's interests and the desire to advance a unifying agenda, is of paramount importance.' Shoigu said Moscow and New Delhi are looking to create 'a new, more just and sustainable world order, ensuring the supremacy of international law and jointly combating modern challenges and threats.' Doval told Shoigu that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is grateful for Moscow's support in the wake of a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir that claimed the lives of 26 civilians in April. 'I would also like to thank you and Russia and particularly President Putin,' he said, reiterating that New Delhi is as committed as Moscow to fighting terrorism. 'We are very excited and delighted to learn about the visit of His Excellency the President of Russia, President Putin to India,' Doval said, addying that the dates of the visit are 'almost finalized.' Vladimir Putin is expected to visit New Delhi at the end of this year for the annual bilateral summit with Modi. Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar is also expected to travel to the Russian capital later this month, sources told RT. Doval's visit comes as New Delhi is under pressure from Washington to stop importing Russian oil. US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday that imposed an additional 25% tariff on imports from India due to its oil trade with Russia. In effect, most Indian exports to the US will be charged a 50% tariff. India has called the measures 'extremely unfortunate,' while pledging to protect its own national interests.

Top Modi adviser holds talks with Russian deputy PM

Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval has held talks with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov in Moscow, the Russian government said in a statement on Friday. This was Doval's third high-level meeting in two days in the Russian capital. On Thursday, he held talks with Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu and met with President Vladimir Putin. Manturov, who was the co-chair of the last session of an Indo-Russian intergovernmental commission in Mumbai in November 2024, discussed a range of issues with Doval on Friday. 'The sides discussed issues of military-technical cooperation between Russia and India, as well as the implementation of joint projects in other strategic sectors, including civil aircraft, metallurgy, and the chemical industry,' the Russian government said. Doval's planned trip to Moscow coincided with a sharp deterioration in India-US ties, with US President Donald Trump imposing 25% tariffs on Indian imports over the country's continued purchases of Russian oil. This was in addition to the 25% that Washington already imposed as the two countries failed to reach a trade agreement. During Doval's visit, the sides discussed Putin's trip to India for this year's annual bilateral summit. The Indian national security adviser said on Thursday that the annual meetings 'have always been watershed moments,' adding: 'They have consistently provided a new direction to our relations.' On Friday, Putin spoke on the phone with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, updating him on efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict. 'We also reviewed the progress in our bilateral agenda, and reaffirmed our commitment to further deepen the India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership,' Modi said on X. Vladimir Putin is expected to visit New Delhi at the end of this year for the annual bilateral summit with Modi.
