Will bring Yettinahole water, Metro to Bengaluru North: Deputy CM DK Shivakumar

BENGALURU: Deputy CM and Bengaluru Development Minister said the government is committed to bringing Yettinahole water to Bengaluru North district by 2027. 'The BJP did not bother supplying water to this region. It was the Congress that is getting water. We have also decided to prepare a detailed project report to bring the Metro to Hoskote, and we will ensure it is completed during our term,' he said at an event organised to distribute e-Swathu documents, title deeds and distribution of benefits of various government schemes to beneficiaries in Hoskote, on the outskirts of the city, on Sunday.
He said property documents were handed over to over 6,000 people on Sunday and that already over 1 lakh beneficiaries were given title deeds.
'We have also taken steps to regularise B-Khatas in Bengaluru. Our government is also giving out more than one crore of patta khatas to scheduled tribes. Hoskote is a large producer of milk, and our 'ksheera dhaare' programme is helping dairy farmers in a big way,' he said.
Sharing his views on small traders and street vendors receiving GST notices, Shivakumar said small vendors are facing problems due to the GST introduced by the BJP government at the Centre.
He said, 'Notices are being issued to all those who are doing business of over Rs 40 lakh, and notices are being issued to tender coconut sellers, vegetable vendors, etc. This is the achievement of the Union government. The traders don't have to worry, we will take necessary actions to protect their interests.'
'We have made several appeals to the Centre for funds for the last two years, but none of the BJP MPs are speaking for the state. They are not concerned about the poor of the state. Karnataka gets only Rs 13 for every Rs 100 it gives to the Centre in the form of taxes.'
At the programme, supporters of Shivakumar raised slogans that he will be the next chief minister of Karnataka

House logjam over SIR continues

NEW DELHI: The face-off between the Opposition and the government continued on Friday as both Houses of Parliament were adjourned over the demand for a discussion on the special intensive revision (SIR) of Bihar electoral rolls. The INDIA bloc, including the Congress, TMC, DMK and RJD, wrote a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla demanding a special discussion on the EC's SIR in Bihar. 'We, the undersigned Members of Parliament representing various Opposition parties, wish to express our deep concern over the voter list revision in Bihar, especially a few months before the state assembly elections,' the letter read. This is unprecedented. The Election Commission has indicated that similar exercises will soon be undertaken across the country. Given the widespread apprehension about the transparency, timing, and intent of this process, the matter requires the urgent attention of the House,' said the letter. In the letter, the parties said the Opposition has consistently raised the issue since the start of the session. 'It was reiterated in several interactions with the government, including the all-party meeting held on Sunday, July 20,' it said. 'While the government has stated its willingness to discuss all issues, including this one, no date has yet been fixed for such a discussion,' it said. A special discussion in the Lok Sabha will allow MPs to seek clarity and ensure transparency, they pointed out. 'We, therefore, urge you to schedule a special discussion on the ongoing voter roll revision without any further delay'. Earlier in the day, a united INDIA bloc held a protest march at the gate of Parliament demanding the rollback of ongoing SIR in Bihar.

Arrest of nuns in Chhattisgarh: Rajeev Chandrasekhar meets Thrissur Archbishop Mar Andrews Thazhath

THRISSUR: BJP state chief Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Friday visited Thrissur Archbishop and president of Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI), Mar Andrews Thazhath, and assured all support for the release of two Malayali nuns arrested in Chhattisgarh. Speaking to the press after the meeting, Mar Thazhath said this was not the first case of arrest involving nuns. There should be a mechanism to ensure justice for the nuns who conduct social work and charity. He added that the Church welcomed the support extended by all, irrespective of political inclinations. Minority rights should be protected across the country, he said. 'The BJP has been following up the case since the moment it was brought to our notice. Judiciary and the legal system will take their own time. But, it is assured that the Chhattisgarh government would not oppose the nuns' bail plea when it comes up before the court. Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah had personally communicated it to me, and I visited Mar Andrews Thazhath to communicate this to him,' Rajeev said. It was a misunderstanding which led to the arrest of the nuns, he said. Two nuns Vandana Francis and Preeta Mary were arrested by Durg police as they were accompanied by tribal girls from Chhattisgarh. They were accused of human trafficking and conversion. However, it is reported that the girls were taken out of their homes for jobs with their consent as they were above 18 years and with their parents' knowledge. The girls follow Christian faith. However, while taking human resources from Chhattisgarh, agents or employers are supposed to register it on a portal even if it is within the state. 'In this case, this registration was not done,' he added.
