Netflix's Biggest Loser documentary sparks criticism over show not prioritizing contestants' health

A new Netflix documentary, Fit for TV: The Reality of the Biggest Loser, has revealed the extreme conditions and health risks faced by contestants on the weight-loss program. Season eight contestant Tracey Yukich recounted her near-fatal experience, collapsing from rhabdomyolysis, a condition that caused her organs to shut down, after a challenging run. Despite medical advice to send her home, Yukich remained on the show, with trainers reportedly pushing her against the recommendations of the program's medical advisor, Dr. Robert Huizenga. The documentary exposed trainers encouraging dangerously low calorie intake, around 800 calories, and intense exercise, often overriding the medical team's recommended 1,200-2,000 calories. Viewers on X expressed widespread outrage, criticizing the show's alleged prioritization of ratings over contestant health.

Some adults in their 60s have younger immune systems, research finds

Mayo Clinic researchers have discovered that some individuals over 60 possess immune systems that appear significantly younger than their chronological age. This cellular 'youthfulness' in older adults, however, is associated with a significant drawback: an increased risk of developing autoimmune diseases. The discovery was made while studying over 100 older patients receiving treatment for giant cell arteritis, a rare autoimmune condition. Researchers found these patients had 'stem-like T cells' which, despite behaving like young stem cells, were contributing to the spread of autoimmune disease. The findings suggest a complex trade-off, indicating that an immune system aging in tandem with the body may offer benefits, despite the perceived advantage of a 'younger' immune system.

New blood pressure guidelines recommend cutting back on alcohol

New guidelines from the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology address high blood pressure, a condition affecting nearly half of US adults and increasing risks of heart attack, stroke, and dementia. A primary recommendation is to significantly reduce sodium intake, with an ideal daily limit of 1,500 milligrams, down from the current average consumption of 3,400 milligrams. The guidelines also advise limiting alcohol consumption to no more than two drinks daily for men and one for women, with an emphasis on avoiding alcohol entirely due to its links to various diseases. Most dietary sodium comes from packaged and prepared foods, highlighting the need to check labels and make low-sodium choices. Further lifestyle recommendations include maintaining a nutritious diet, a healthy weight, regular physical activity, and managing stress to prevent or treat high blood pressure.
