Ensure No Name is Excluded from Voters' List: Mamata's Message to BLOs

Taking to X, National convenor of BJP's IT cell, Amit Malviya said, 'West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is now openly threatening Election Commission officials — saying they work for the state and shouldn't follow directions from the National Election Commission! Why this desperation? To shield her illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya vote bank.'
'She's brazenly opposing a clean, verified voter list — because TMC's survival depends on fake voters. Mamata Banerjee knows that without bogus votes, TMC will collapse. This isn't just political arrogance — it's a direct assault on India's Constitution and democracy!' he alleged.
The Chief Minister also asked the BLOs to keep an eye on the names of long-time voters in the state so that they are not left out of the voter list.
Giving an example she said, 'Suppose a boy goes on a trip for four days, will you remove his name? Does it happen?'
The Chief Minister also advised the District Magistrates to "keep their eyes and ears open", while expressing dissatisfaction with their work. 'The District Magistrates should keep their eyes and ears open. Many times, I see District Magistrates are giving responsibility to someone below them. 1000 people have been taken to Delhi for training. The District Magistrates should have told me or the Chief Secretary. But they did not do that,' she said in the meeting.
After Bihar, the Election Commission may start the SIR exercise in West Bengal too. Although the ECI has not made any formal announcement on the date of commencement of this exercise in West Bengal, a section of the BLOs who will be associated with this work has been trained in phases. The training was conducted in Delhi on July 17-18. Similarly, a training programme was organized at Nazrul Mancha in Kolkata yesterday.
The Chief Minister said that the state was not aware of the ECI training programme in Delhi.
Trinamool Congress National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Monday alleged that 'the ECI is working as a BJP puppet to favour one party'. He said, 'They are torturing Bengalis in the name of SIR. Yesterday in Bihar, a dog's name was used to issue a residential certificate, and that was used to generate a voter ID card. That means people's right to vote is being taken away, and dogs are getting the certificates.'
Meanwhile, in the administrative meeting, West Bengal Chief Minister also raised the issue of "torture" and "harassment" of migrant workers from West Bengal in other states. She ordered to bring back the migrant workers of Bengal who want to return to the state. She asked Chief Secretary Manoj Pant to sit with Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Samirul Islam and West Bengal Minister Malay Ghatak on this issue.
Banerjee informed that about 22 lakh migrant workers of the state are working in different states. She said that they will be given 100 days of work when they return to the state. Ration cards and swasthya sathi cards will also be issued to them.

Are Rohingya people in India refugees or illegal migrants? Supreme Court to decide

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday said it will examine whether Rohingyas staying in the country were refugees or illegal migrants before going ahead with hearing a batch of petitions filed on their behalf challenging their deportation and seeking basic amenities during their stay in refugee camps. IA Rohingya woman holds her baby boy's hand at a refugee camp in Bangladesh. (AP FILE/REPRESENTATIVE IMAGE) 'The first major issue is whether they are refugees or illegal migrants. Rest is consequential,' a bench of justices Surya Kant, Dipankar Datta and N Kotiswar Singh said. 'If they are refugees, they are entitled to certain protections under law. If not, they are illegal migrants and should be deported back to their country.' The four questions framed by the court in the Rohingya batch of cases included, 'whether Rohingya entrants are entitled to be declared as refugees and if so, what protection emanates from the rights they are entitled to; whether Rohingyas are illegal entrants and if government of India and states are obligated to deport them in accordance with law.' There were two consequential issues also that were framed by the court. These were: 'Even if Rohingya entrants are held to be illegal entrants, can they be detained indefinitely or they are entitled to be released on bail subject to conditions.' Lastly, it said, 'Whether Rohingya entrants who are not detained but living in refugee camps have been provided with basic amenities like drinking water, sanitation, education, etc.' The court had taken up 22 cases involving the deportation of Rohingya who were either in detention camps or claimed refugee status. Among these, the bench sought to segregate cases related to Rohingya migrants as a single batch. The other cases involving other foreigners were directed to be grouped into a separate batch to be handled separately. As the batch of cases got listed together, the bench expressed a practical difficulty in proceeding with the hearing, as some petitions spoke about the deportation of foreigners in general, while others specifically related to the condition of foreigners in detention camps. Advocate Kanu Agarwal, appearing for the central government, submitted a list of cases pertaining to Rohingya people and urged the court to decide this batch of cases first. The non-Rohingya matters, he added, seek interpretation of the Foreigners Act. The bench agreed, saying, 'The issues that arise in the other batch of cases will be determined separately on another date.' Advocate Prashant Bhushan, who was appearing in multiple petitions, said that the genesis of these cases began with cases filed by Rohingya people in 2013. He said 15 out of the batch of 22 cases pertained to Rohingya refugees and the need to provide them facilities in their camps on par with refugees recognised under the UN Convention on Refugees. India is not a signatory to this convention and has not considered granting refugee status to them. Senior advocates Ashwani Kumar and Colin Gonsalves, appearing in other matters, pointed out that the Rohingya people who hail from Myanmar have fled to India seeking asylum as they were being persecuted in their country. Gonsalves further referred to a case filed by the wife of a foreigner facing detention in Assam which concern Rohingya and non-Rohingya foreigners. In that case, Gonsalves showed orders passed by the court to expedite the deportation process despite the fact that Myanmar was unwilling to take these persons back. In May this year, while hearing an application filed by Rohingya people in Delhi, the top court refused to adopt a piecemeal approach in deciding individual cases and called for all cases pending on the issue to be listed together. The Centre has been opposing the maintainability of these petitions, citing the Supreme Court's order passed in April 2021. This order permits the Centre to take deportation measures as required under law and held that while the right to life and liberty is available to even non-citizens, the right not to be deported is ancillary but concomitant to the right to reside or settle in any part of India, which is guaranteed under Article 19(1)(e) only to citizens.

CM tells police chief to crack down on black marketing of fertilizers

Blaming the Centre's policy for the shortage of urea and Diammonium Phosphate (DAP) during the ongoing kharif season in Karnataka, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday instructed Director-General and Inspector-General of Police M.A. Saleem to keep vigilance to prevent the sale of fertilizers on the black market. Despite the Central government's inaction, the State government is taking necessary steps to ensure supply of fertilizers so that farmers are not inconvenienced during the sowing season, he said. Mr. Siddaramaiah has instructed the police chief to keep a close watch on black marketeers who are trying to create a shortage of fertilizers by illegally hoarding and selling it on the black market. 'There should be no artificial shortage of fertilizers in the district, taluk, or hobli,' the Chief Minister said, and instructed the police to keep a close watch on those who are creating shortages. While the BJP accused the government of mismanaging the available stock of fertilizers, the Congress termed the BJP claims of the Centre supplying adequate quantities of urea as 'false.' On Thursday, the Chief Minister met Ministers and Congress legislators of Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Gagad, Haveri, Shivamogga, Davangere, Chitradurga, Chikkamagaluru, and Chickballapur. During three days, he met Ministers and MLAs of all districts and heard their grievances related to funds and development works.
