Children's Books: Giselle Potter's ‘Before She Was My Grandmother'

'Everyone has a story that is much bigger than the part you can see,' a young girl realizes in 'Before She Was My Grandmother' (Enchanted Lion, 52 pages, $19.99), a picture book written and illustrated with characteristic sublimity by Giselle Potter. Here is a tender account of a child's connection with a grandparent, which also tells of the older woman's life before the girl was born. During their visits, the grandmother, Alice, uses items from a box of memorabilia to evoke aspects of her past. A nesting doll reminds her of how she'd been wheelchair-bound and unable to run like other children because her joints were stiff. ('Sometimes, Alice felt just like her wooden doll.') Brass binoculars recall the time she was sent away from her family to a sanatorium in Switzerland, in hopes of a cure. What might sound like a troubled history feels anything but heavy in this buoyant and appealing book. The lightness comes partly from Ms. Potter's signature style of art, with its marzipan colors and naif figures; it comes also from the way she leavens sad moments with comforting ones. For example, Alice's disability meant she couldn't frisk in the waves with her sisters, but she could sit on the sand 'collecting stones and shells.' For the modern 5- to 8-year-old, accustomed to the absent presence of adults on their phones, the most striking moment may come at the beginning, when the child says that her grandmother 'makes me feel important when she looks into my eyes and listens carefully to everything I have to say.' In 'Peggy Goes for a Walk' (Post Wave, 24 pages, $15.99), a grandfather shows similar relaxed attentiveness on an autumn ramble in the woods with his little granddaughter. Written and illustrated by Tonka Uzu, this simple book for children ages 3 to 5 begins with the girl, Peggy, rushing off in her red rainboots and yellow overalls. 'Come on, let's go!' she calls back to Grandpa, whose 'legs are slower.' Together the pair find mushrooms, listen to a woodpecker, lie in the leaves and feel the patter of rain. By the end, their roles are reversed. Now it is the grandfather urging: 'Come on, Peggy, let's go.' And it is her turn to feel tired. After their exciting (but age-appropriate and low-key) outing, her legs 'don't move quickly any more.'

Ozzy Osbourne Debuts Five Songs On The Charts As Fans Mourn His Passing

In the days following his shocking passing, Ozzy Osbourne's catalog experienced huge gains in both sales and streams. Such a surge is not unusual for a beloved musician just after death, and the increase is reflected on charts all around the globe. At the moment, in the United Kingdom — Osbourne's home turf — the grief seems to be especially strong. While a number of his tracks returned to several tallies, perhaps the most surprising move on the rankings right now is the sheer number of debuts he manages posthumously. Five Brand New Hits for Ozzy Osbourne Of the seven hits Osbourne currently has on the charts in the U.K., five are brand new arrivals – at least on some lists. A handful debut across every tally on which they appear, while others land on specific rankings for the first time and return to others. "Crazy Train" and "No More Tears" debut on three charts apiece. "Crazy Train" also manages to reappear on the Official Rock & Metal Singles chart, where it breaks back in at No. 3, a new all-time peak for the classic. Amazingly, "Crazy Train" is the only one of Osbourne's solo tunes to appear on the Official Singles chart, the 100-space ranking of the most consumed cuts throughout the country. On that roster, one of his most celebrated releases opens at No. 56. "Mama, I'm Coming Home" and "Mr. Crowley" Debut "Dreamer / Gets Me Through" is brand new to both the Official Singles Sales and Official Singles Downloads charts, where the single entity enters just below the top 20. Meanwhile, "Mama, I'm Coming Home" and "Mr. Crowley" debut on one list apiece, though they reach different rankings. "Mama, I'm Coming Home" begins its time on the Official Rock & Metal Singles tally at No. 16, while "Mr. Crowley" narrowly breaks onto the Official Singles Downloads chart, entering at No. 97. "Mama, I'm Coming Home" Reaches Several New Peaks While "Mr. Crowley" only appears on that downloads chart, "Mama, I'm Coming Home" becomes a top 10 bestseller on both the Official Singles Sales and Official Singles Downloads rankings as well, breaking back in at No. 6 on both at the same time. That's a never-before-seen peak for the classic on those two tallies.

A Stylish Wedding With Mallorcan flavors, Bulgarian Rakia—and Dancing Under Moonlight

It didn't take long for the couple to realize that the planner's lack of expertise with the Balearic Island, and Es Racó's relative inexperience with weddings (theirs would only be the third thrown there), would make plotting the celebration an uphill battle. 'They are incredible, but they don't run a wedding-planning business. They run a hotel,' Des says. Struggling to nail down a date, what type of vendors they would need (like an AV team and furniture rentals), and the capabilities of different layouts or spots for each event, the couple finally flew from New York to Mallorca to hammer out the plan on site in April 2024. 'Our wedding planner turned out to be unprepared. She took me to a flower shop that was completely clueless, even when I had sent over inspiration multiple times,' says Des. 'So three days in, we fired the wedding planner.' With the wedding only six weeks away, they started over by asking Es Racó about the event planners that had worked on the two previous weddings held there, and ended up hiring Pauline de Saussure at Saussure Events, which was an instant game-changer. 'They knew the contact, the venue, the AV and logistics needs, and who could show up to the middle of the mountains with a wedding cake,' Des says. 'She brought to the table so many things that I didn't even know you had to do for the wedding.' The couple opted for candlelight over flowers. ILL GANDER Dramatic bunches of palm leaves added to the low-lit romantic setting. ILL GANDER Hold tight to your aesthetic vision While that first florist the couple saw had put forth dainty little blooms, Des and Shane had a bigger statement in mind for their florals—which is that there would barely be florals at all. The decor complemented the Mallorcan surroundings instead of competing with them, via warm wooden chairs, white candles in glass vessels, and spare explosions of palm leaves standing tall and architecturally, all handled by Enesencia Design. 'We chose to do a ton of candles to keep the light low. I think people look stunning when the light is at your eye level. It gives you that golden glow,' says Des. 'We had these very tall greens to add some height, since the tent was so tall.'
