Politicians in power should not consider themselves kings, says Madras HC
Justice P Velmurugan, presiding over the matter, remarked that politicians in power should not see themselves as kings or queens entitled to sovereign immunity. He made this comment after Advocate General PS Raman informed the court that Tamil Nadu police had closed all 124 complaints filed against the former minister over his alleged remarks.
Justice Velmurugan remarked that nowadays, all politicians and individuals making public speeches seem to believe that Article 19 grants them absolute rights, as if "only the sky is the limit". He added that the court could not remain a silent spectator in such matters.
"Everyone taking a mic in public must understand. A strong message should go. So many things are being said, as if they (politicians) are the kings of this country. Whatever they say, (they think) they can do no wrong. The court cannot watch these things silently," Justice P Velmurugan said.
The controversy stems from a public event organised by Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam, during which Ponmudi allegedly made a lewd joke referring to Shaivite and Vaishnavite religious symbols. A video of the speech went viral, drawing widespread condemnation, including from DMK MP Kanimozhi.
In response, party president and Chief Minister MK Stalin removed Ponmudi from his role as DMK's deputy general secretary. Later, Ponmudi was forced to resign from the Cabinet as well.
Case to be heard in August
In response to the advocate general's argument that the complainants had the option to approach senior police officials regarding the closure of their cases, Justice P Velmurugan decided to keep the suo motu case pending. He also instructed that police officers must serve closure reports to all 124 complainants.
The case is scheduled for further hearing on August 1, 2025.

Eventually, democracy wins, and we [the democratic forces] have the responsibility to make it win,' he said. Mr. Stalin further announced that a memorial would be built near Salem Central Prison, where 22 Communist cadres were killed in the 1950 firing. He said instructions were given to the officials concerned, and that the works would begin on Sunday. Later, the Chief Minister reached Dharmapuri district, and participated in a road show from Adiyamankottai to Travellers Bungalow near the Collectorate.

Students should develop strong moral character that is woven patiently from threads of principle, doctrine and obedience to become successful in life and career, said Justice R. Mahadevan, Judge, Supreme Court of India, on Saturday. In his inaugural address at 40th convocation of VIT at its campus here, Justice Mr. Mahadevan said that strong moral character helps to make consistent correct choices in the trials and testing of life. It helps a person to grow as leaders of tomorrow to guide fellow citizens of the country. 'Righteous character provides the foundation of spiritual strength which will lead to success in your entire life. Students should have faith in themselves to face challenges in life,' he said. The Judge emphasised on the importance of reading among students as it is the gateway to the world of knowledge. Students should deepen and broaden their knowledge in every field to become more stronger in human values, he said. In his presidential address, G. Viswanathan, founder and chancellor, VIT, said that at present, parents especially from the middle and lower class were finding it challenging to pay fees of their children especially for higher studies in private universities. In this regard, the government should share at least a portion of fees paid by parents as it will encourage more students from rural areas to pursue higher education. 'Tamil Nadu tops in allocating the highest share of its budget allocation for education in the country with 21% of its budget in 2025-26. Ungaludan Stalin Scheme used to enroll voters into DMK: EPS
Leader of Opposition and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Saturday alleged that the newly launched Ungaludan Stalin Scheme (USS) by the State government has been used by the ruling DMK party as a ploy to enroll voters as members of the party. Addressing a public gathering here as part of his State-wide tour, Mr. Palaniswami said the DMK has come to a stage where the party has to do door-to-door campaigns for membership drive for 2026 assembly polls. The former Chief Minister blamed DMK for trying to break AIADMK after the party returned to power in May 2021. Several attempts were made by the DMK to split its archrival but all its attempts were failed due to loyal support of party cadre to AIADMK leadership led by him. The AIADMK leader said that many poor government students especially in rural areas were able to pursue medical education in the State mainly due to 7.5% internal reservation in undergraduate medical admissions that was introduced during the AIADMK regime under his tenure. 'At present, 2,818 students pursue MBBS in the State under the internal reservation that was brought during AIADMK rule. On the contrary, DMK is known only for organising car races in Chennai and a proposal to install a PEN memorial in the sea using tax payers money,' he said.
