GMA Network5 days ago
Lyann De Guzman made an immediate impact in her professional debut, steering Nxled to a 25-23, 19-25, 19-25, 25-15, 15-10 thrilling upset over Petro Gazz in the PVL On Tour on Saturday at the Batangas City Sports Complex.
The rookie out of Ateneo de Manila University scattered a game-high 21 points anchored on 18 attacks and three aces while also grabbing eight digs and nine receptions to help the Chameleons went 1-0 early in Pool A.
De Guzman's all-around showing supplied help to her seniors EJ Cariño and Chiara Permentilla with the former tallying 12 points and the latter posting 10 markers.
"I'm very happy because we won against the best team of the last conference. I know that we have to keep our feet on the ground, but it's a big game so we're happy," Nxled head coach Etorre Guidetti said.
De Guzman, who was picked fourth overall during the recent Rookie Draft, admitted she was nervous at first, especially after Guidetti gave her a starting role alongside the veterans. But she credited her seniors for helping her overcome the jitters.
"Actually, nu'ng una talaga sobrang kinakabahan talaga ako. Sabi lang ng mga ate ko na relax lang and just enjoy the game and mas umangat lang 'yung confidence ko with their help," the former Blue Eagle said.
"Of course, we're very happy kasi ayun nga, parang lahat ng training namin these past few weeks lumabas siya sa laro namin and of course we just need to follow the system of coach and 'yung points darating na lang,"
Petro Gazz, the reigning champions of All-Filipino Conference, was without some key players in Brooke Van Sickle and MJ Phillips, who are both suiting up for Alas Pilipinas in the VTV Cup.
Still, the Angels put up a fight behind Myla Pablo, who top-scored them with 16 points laced with 10 digs and eight receptions while Nicole Tiamzon and Jonah Sabete chipped in 15 and 14 markers each.

Alas Pilipinas falls short vs defending champs Korabelka in VTV Cup semis

Alas Pilipinas fell short against Russian club Korabelka, 25-16, 25-27, 25-17, 25-22, in the semifinals of the VTV Cup on Friday in Vietnam. The women's national volleyball team was trailing 19-17 in the fourth set before an attack by Vanie Gandler put the Philippines closer. The Russians, however, scored three straight to widen the gap, 22-18. An attack error by Korabelka added another point for the Philippines, before the Russians scored another one after a challenge confirmed a block touch from the Philippine side. Alas recovered after back-to-back attack errors from the Russians to inch closer, 23-21, but Korabelka eventually sealed the victory. With the loss, the Philippines was relegated to the battle for third on Saturday against the loser of the match between Vietnam and Chinese Taipei. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

NBA: Lakers sign center DeAndre Ayton

The Los Angeles Lakers and free agent Deandre Ayton agreed to terms Wednesday afternoon, shortly after the center cleared waivers and became an unrestricted free agent, according to multiple media reports. Ayton made headlines in recent days after he and his most recent team, the Portland Trail Blazers, mutually agreed to forgo the final year of his contract and negotiate a buyout, allowing him to reach free agency. Between money owed to him by Portland and his new deal with Los Angeles, Ayton is set to earn $34 million this season, per reporting from ESPN. Despite being a seven-year pro with 398 NBA games on his resume, Ayton is still just 26. His birthday is July 23. A former No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns, Ayton has averaged 16.4 points, 10.5 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game in 398 career games (391 starts). New Lakers teammate Luka Doncic was the No. 3 choice in that same draft. He was a part of the 2018-19 All Rookie first team, though arguably his greatest achievement as a professional was being part of the Suns team that lost in a memorable series with Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA Finals in 2021. Portland acquired him as part of a three-team trade with Milwaukee and Phoenix that sent All-Star guard Damian Lillard from the Trail Blazers to the Bucks on Sept. 27, 2023. --Field Level Media/ Reuters
