'Nothing less than £80m' or '£60m is a risk'? Rival fans on Mbeumo's value

BBC News4 hours ago

With Manchester United having submitted an improved offer for Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo, we asked both sets of fans on our club pages how much they thought he was worth. Here are some of your comments:Brentford fansGeorge: Nothing less than £80m. The reason why is simple - the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United have shovelled out far, far more for players who are far, far worse. While he is at his most effective alongside strike-partner Yoane Wissa, only Mohamed Salah is more deadly when cutting onto his left foot at the edge of the box.Brian: £60m might be the lowest option, but I think £40m-50m would be closer to his price. He's had a good season but I think he's never going to do it again. He's a good player but not a great one - take the money and run.Vince: More than £60m compared with other market deals. He's a talented forward who runs and works so hard for the team. He has a brilliant temperament and doesn't see red mist and get sent off like Matheus Cunha. He has one year left with a further one-year option on his contract.HerzyBee: Mbeumo's overall contribution puts him in the top five for most relevant stats for a striker - he works incredibly hard and defends well, and scored 20 goals - five more than £62.5m Cunha. Pay up, United.Man Utd fansBarry: Leave it at £60m and if they say no then walk away. We have fallen into this trap lots of times and we pay far too much just for flops.Tony: He's a slightly-better-than-average player worth about the £50m mark. Then, as with every other player United are interested in, the selling clubs apply an erroneous 'United tax', increasing a player's value by about 20%. The £50m player suddenly becomes a £60m player.Jacob: For a man who has scored 20 goals in the best league in the world, £60m would be a steal. Anything there or thereabouts would be a good deal on United's part.Chris: Proven in the Premier League makes him worth £60m, but having just one big-return season so far makes any more a risk. Also, he is out for critical period at Africa Cup of Nations - potentially a month.Matthew: I feel £60m is more than enough for Mbeumo. He's brilliant for Brentford, but part of me feels he got a little lucky last season and scored more goals than he should have (20 goals from 12.3 xG). It may be another case of a player underperforming at United compared with their old club. What did the top three results of our polls say?Bees fans: £60m-70m - 42%; £70m-80m - 23%; £60m - 18%United fans: £60m - 54%; £60m-70m - 27%; Wouldn't buy him - 16%

Watch: Jodie Burrage baffled after ball goes through net at Eastbourne

Jodie Burrage was left stunned in her second-round Eastbourne clash with last year's Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova after the ball went through a hole in the net. With Burrage a break up in the second set after losing the first, the Briton celebrated when a forehand hit by her Czech opponent crashed into the net to hand her a 30-15 advantage. However, Burrage's celebration immediately turned to confusion when the ball appeared on her side of the court. Chair umpire Marija Čičak awarded the point to Krejcikova, much to Burrage's bemusement. Burrage was adamant that the ball had not gone over the net and that it had instead gone through a hole in the net to land on the other side of the court. 'At 5-4, it was 15-15 and a pretty important point,' Burrage said afterwards. 'Her ball went through the net and the umpire didn't see it and thought it had hit the net and went over. 'I went over and looked because I was 100 per cent sure that it went through the net and there was a hole.' Burrage immediately questioned the decision, which the umpire explained hit the net and went over, before the British No 7 walked to the net and found a broken cord towards the top of the it. Having also inspected the defective net, Krejcikova acknowledged she had failed to return the ball onto Burrage's side of the court and conceded the point, causing umpire Čičak to overturn her decision. 'When Barbora saw that, she obviously gave me the point which I am not sure I would do the same thing in that scenario because at the end of the day, I won the next two points and the second set. So full credit to her,' Burrage added. 'I don't think many people are giving me that. It shows what kind of person she is and (I was) very lucky to have that point and set. But tough match and result overall.' Burrage, having been awarded the point to go 15-30 up on Krejcikova's serve, went on to clinch the game and in turn the second set to send the match into a decider. But she would fall agonisingly short after losing a third-set tie-break to suffer a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3) defeat, despite having three match points on the Czech player's serve in the decider. 'I saw something going through, but I didn't know if there is a hole or not, and then when she found a hole I'm saying I feel like it was also going through so it's your [Burrage's] point,' Krejcikova said after the match. It was Krejcikova's second British opponent of the tournament after she knocked out Harriet Dart in the opening round on Tuesday in a game that was affected by rain delays. On that occasion, home favourite Dart had two match points only for Krejcikova to save both before going on to win the match, which left her opponent in tears, shrieking and yelling at her box. Burrage, who came through the first round on the south coast 6-3, 6-2 against Moyuka Uchijima, spoke afterwards about the importance of that victory ahead of Wimbledon, which gets under way on Monday.

Chelsea in line for millions after £19m star's season rivals Florian Wirtz's

Chelsea could be set for a significant windfall this summer if Ipswich Town winger Omari Hutchinson is sold, with the Blues having inserted a sell-on clause in the player's contract Chelsea could be set for a significant cash boost this summer, thanks to a shrewd clause included in the contract that saw Omari Hutchinson move to Ipswich Town last year. Hutchinson has caught the eye of several top-tier clubs following two impressive seasons with Ipswich, that has seen him become one of the most productive wingers in Europe. The 21-year-old initially joined the Tractor Boys on loan in the summer of 2023 and played a key role in their promotion-winning campaign, scoring 11 goals and providing six assists. ‌ Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna was keen to secure Hutchinson's services on a permanent basis, leading to a £22million transfer last summer. However, Chelsea ensured they included a sell-on clause in the deal, entitling them to 25% of any future transfer fee. ‌ It's understood that Chelsea also have first refusal on Hutchinson if another club tries to sign him, with the player having the final say. This savvy move by the Blues could result in a substantial windfall as Hutchinson is now valued at just under £19m, according to Transfermarkt. This clause mirrors a similar strategy employed by Arsenal when they sold Hutchinson back to Chelsea in 2022. Hutchinson began his career at Chelsea's Cobham training ground before moving to Charlton Athletic in 2012 and then to Arsenal in 2015, reports Football London. After Chelsea opted to bring Hutchinson back to west London, Arsenal managed to secure a sell-on clause believed to be between 15 and 20%, which resulted in a tidy profit when Chelsea sold Hutchinson to Ipswich last year. Now, it appears that Chelsea could soon see a return on their investment in Hutchinson. The skilful winger is reportedly being eyed by Everton, Brentford, West Ham and Fulham, with Bundesliga heavyweights Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig also said to be interested. The 21-year-old is understood to be keen on continuing to play at the top level, something that relegated Ipswich can't offer at present. His impressive stats certainly lend weight to his ambition. ‌ Only Liverpool's new star Florian Wirtz and PSG's dynamic winger Doue completed more dribbles last season than Hutchinson, who clocked up 95. Compared to the £100m, potentially rising to £116m, that Liverpool recently splashed out for Wirtz, Hutchinson's anticipated fee will be relatively modest in comparison. Doue has also joined the ranks of Europe's most sought-after stars following his standout performances in PSG's Champions League triumph in May. ‌ While he may not be a prolific scorer, Hutchinson proved this season that he can hold his own against the best, netting goals against Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea. After initially playing for Jamaica, Hutchinson earned his first cap for the England Under-21s in August 2024. In an interview with the East Anglian Daily Times this March, he shared his emotions about playing at the pinnacle of football. "It's a dream come true for me to play in the Premier League, facing the biggest teams in the world," he said. "All I've tried to do is perform as best as I can. There's been a lot of ups and downs, but I think it builds character for me and the team as well." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Man Utd have just been given major helping hand in landing two transfer deals

Ruben Amorim's Manchester United have received two huge transfer boosts that could help sell an £86million flop and bring in a new goalkeeper to Old Trafford as Andre Onana's struggles continue Manchester United's chase for Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa has been given a lift, while the sale of £86million disappointment Antony has also been buoyed. Ruben Amorim's squad have already secured Wolves star Matheus Cunha in this transfer window, costing them a hefty £62.5m. However, there could still be more arrivals at Old Trafford. Following another inconsistent season from No. 1 Andre Onana, the Red Devils are keen to bring in a new goalkeeper. One potential recruit is 25-year-old Portugal international Costa. ‌ The Porto ace seems set to leave his homeland during this window. Recent developments suggest that his team are also on the hunt for a new goalkeeper, which boosts United's chances of securing him. ‌ Real Betis also appear ready to receive a significant cash injection, potentially increasing their ability to afford United flop Antony, while a medical that could have a knock-on effect regarding Marcus Rashford's potential move to Barcelona has been scheduled. Here, Mirror Football looks at all the transfer market goings-on that could benefit the Red Devils. Man Utd's Costa boost as Porto boss makes demand Amorim's hunt for a new No. 1 could conclude this summer if a deal for Porto's Costa is agreed upon. A Bola reports that Costa will depart the Portuguese giants this summer in pursuit of a 'new challenge.' It's been hinted that he 'dreams' of playing in England, and both United, as well as rivals Manchester City, are keen on his services. Costa has a £64m release clause in his contract. Costa's current team have already lined up a replacement, with TV Azteca reporting that Cruz Azul's goalkeeper, Kevin Mier, is on Porto's shortlist and has been prioritised by club president Andre Villas-Boas. Porto boss, Martin Anselmi, is also claimed to have recommended the club sign him. While it's suggested that the Portuguese side will face competition for Colombian Mier from Galatasaray, if they secure him, Costa's departure could be imminent, reports the Manchester Evening News. £26m agreement could pave the way for Antony's exit Real Betis look set to bag a £26m windfall with midfielder Johnny Cardoso on the brink of joining La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid. This cash boost could allow Antony to leave Old Trafford for good. The Brazilian winger, who joined under Erik ten Hag in 2022 for a whopping £86m, never lived up to his price tag in Manchester and was loaned out to the Spanish side in January. ‌ Antony seemed a player reborn in Spain, netting nine goals and providing five assists, while playing a significant role in their journey to the Europa Conference League final, where they were defeated by Chelsea. With Cardoso almost out the door, it remains to be seen whether the £26m gained will be used to bring Antony back to the club permanently. Reports suggest a fee of £25m would suffice while the player would be open to the move. Barcelona medical gives Rashford hope With Rashford's future at Old Trafford looking increasingly uncertain, Barcelona have been tipped as a potential new home for the star who spent last season on loan at Aston Villa. ‌ As per talkSPORT, despite the club closing in on a deal for Euro 2024 hero Nico Williams, the La Liga giants could make a move for Rashford this summer. Meanwhile, young Barcelona winger Ansu Fati, who previously had a stint with Brighton, is reportedly close to securing a loan move to French side AS Monaco. According to Fabrizio Romano, a medical has already been scheduled. The departure of Fati could potentially open up a spot in the squad, and free up the wages, to accommodate Rashford, though at this stage, a move for the England star still seems unlikely.
