CBI arrests 2 for deceiving NEET aspirants by posing as middlemen
New Delhi, The CBI arrested two men from Maharashtra for allegedly deceiving NEET UG 2025 aspirants and their families by claiming they could manipulate scores, and charging ₹90 lakh per candidate, officials said on Saturday.
Sandeep Shah and Salim Patel, residents of Solapur and Navi Mumbai, respectively, allegedly hoodwinked candidates by posing as middlemen with access to non-existent officials of the National Testing Agency .
The CBI is on the trail of a third suspect, who is absconding, understood to be the mastermind of the scam.
They allegedly demanded up to ₹90 lakh per candidate, later reducing the amount to ₹87.5 lakh during negotiations for ensuring ranks in the merit, the police said.
Shah allegedly held clandestine meetings with anxious parents at the upscale ITC Grand Central hotel in Mumbai's Parel locality.
During these meetings, he allegedly assured clients that their children's scores could be inflated and that the revised marks would be disclosed a full six hours before the official announcement of results.
The CBI investigation showed that Shah was in touch with Patel, who operates an admission consultancy firm in Navi Mumbai, and another individual who runs a similar consultancy in Pune.
"A forensic examination of the mobile phones of the arrested individuals uncovered incriminating chats containing details of prospective candidates, their roll numbers, admit cards, OMR sheets, and evidence of financial transactions through Hawala networks," a CBI Spokesperson said in a statement.
Both were presented before a special court earlier this week which sent them to CBI custody till June 16.
"The investigation has not found any involvement of government officials or NTA personnel with the accused persons in the case. The accused misled parents by falsely claiming connections with NTA officials," the spokesperson added.
Authorities believe the accused cynically misled parents by fabricating connections with examination authorities to give credence to their elaborate scheme.

Thane, A special CBI court in Maharashtra's Thane district has acquitted a former station master in a bribery case of 2009, observing the complainant's testimony is not corroborated by any evidence brought on record by the prosecution. Additional Sessions Judge Suryakant S Shinde, in the order on June 9, said the prosecution "miserably failed to prove any of the charges" against Ramkaran Panchuram Meena, who was accused of demanding a bribe from a fruit vendor. A copy of the order was made available on Sunday. According to the prosecution, Vendor Sonu Rashid Raeen had alleged that on June 13, 2009, Diva railway station master Meena demanded a bribe of ₹1,000 per month and an additional ₹5,000 for previous months to allow him to sell fruits in trains and on the station premises in Thane district. The Central Bureau of Investigation laid a trap the same day and claimed to have caught Meena accepting an installment of ₹2,500. Based on the vendor's complaint, Meena was charged under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The prosecution's case relied on testimonies of the complainant and a panch witness, and electronic evidence in the form of voice recordings. The court, however, observed the primary proof was the oral testimony of the complainant, which was not supported by any other credible evidence. It also noted that the panch witness never entered the station master's cabin during the alleged demand or the trap, making his testimony unhelpful. The electronic evidence, which could have corroborated the demand and acceptance of the bribe, was found to be unreliable. "After hearing the conversation recorded in the memory card before the court, no conversation is appearing in respect of demand of bribe by the accused and acceptance there of. The conversation is not clearly audible," the judge said. The court also highlighted that the transcripts noted "voice not clear", "train sound" and "noise of train" at several points. Furthermore, the court took a dim view that a certificate under section 65-B of the Evidence Act, essential for admitting electronic evidence, was not filed by the prosecution. The judge also cast doubt on the complainant's credibility. "The complainant was having a grudge against the accused, therefore, implicating of accused in false case cannot be ruled out," the court said. "To sum up the above discussion, from the above observations, it is clear that the oral testimony of the complainant in respect of demand of bribe by the accused and acceptance of it is not corroborated by any evidence brought on record by the prosecution," it said.

Shah: Goons don't dictate terms, UP has transformed under Yogi
1 2 Lucknow: Union home minister Amit Shah Sunday said here on Sunday that under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath , Uttar Pradesh has shed its legacy of lawlessness and UP has seen a remarkable turnaround. Speaking at an event at the Defence Expo Ground in Lucknow to hand over appointment letters to 60,244 police constables selected in the country's largest-ever police recruitment drive, Shah said: "Goons no longer dictate terms in the state. The rule of law has been established. It is now our mission that within the next five years, we will create a system where an FIR is followed by a verdict from the Supreme Court within three years. " Shah termed the event a "historic ceremony" for Uttar Pradesh Police. Shah praised UP's transparent police recruitment process, and emphasized that no bribes, recommendations, or caste-based bias were involved unlike the previous govts in the state. "Each of you was selected purely on merit from over 48 lakh applications," he told the recruits. Over 12,000 women have joined the force, with Shah commending their confidence and readiness. He also personally handed over appointment letters to 15 constables. He lauded the state's decision to reserve 20% of posts for women, noting that over 12,000 of the recruits were women. "When I met some of the young women today, their confidence and determination were written all over their faces," he said. "Uttar Pradesh now has the largest police force in the country, equipped with command centres, AI-based tools, PCR vans, and on-wheel forensic labs. He urged the new officers to uphold the modern policing ethos of security, service, and sensitivity," he said. Shah credited CM Yogi Adityanath for restoring law and order in UP. "Before 2017, the state's law and order was in decline but since Yogi ji took charge, UP Police has touched new heights," he said. He pointed out that police modernisation in UP was stagnant from 2014 to 2017 but transformed post-2017 with Modi-Yogi governance synergy. Highlighting three new criminal laws, Shah said these reforms would ensure that citizens receive justice from FIR to the Supreme Court within three years. "You are not just joining a force — you're becoming the face of justice, security, and empathy in 'Amrit Kaal'. Be strict with criminals, but a protector to the poor, backward, and tribal communities," he said. A total of 60,244 constables, including 12,048 women, were recruited by the UP Police recruitment and promotion board (UPPRPB), which received more than 48 lakh applications. The recruitment process was completed under the then director of UPPRPB Rajeev Krishna, who is currently the director general of police. With the Sunday's inductions, the total strength of the force now reached nearly four lakh personnel, which includes around 36,000 women personnel. This strength covers all non-gazetted ranks across various wings of the police, excluding home guards, and marks a significant push toward modernising the police force, a senior police officer added.

"Each of you was selected purely on merit from among 48 lakh applicants. There were no bribes, recommendations or caste-based bias, unlike when other governments were in office." Shah commended the Yogi government for reserving 20% of the advertised posts in the constabulary for women, saying he was particularly delighted to meet some of those young recruits and see "confidence and determination written on their faces".
