Lucknow: Union home minister
Amit Shah
Sunday said here on Sunday that under the leadership of Chief Minister
Yogi Adityanath
, Uttar Pradesh has shed its legacy of lawlessness and UP has seen a remarkable turnaround.
Speaking at an event at the Defence Expo Ground in Lucknow to hand over appointment letters to 60,244 police constables selected in the country's largest-ever police recruitment drive, Shah said: "Goons no longer dictate terms in the state. The rule of law has been established. It is now our mission that within the next five years, we will create a system where an FIR is followed by a verdict from the Supreme Court within three years.
"
Shah termed the event a "historic ceremony" for Uttar Pradesh Police.
Shah praised UP's transparent police recruitment process, and emphasized that no bribes, recommendations, or caste-based bias were involved unlike the previous govts in the state. "Each of you was selected purely on merit from over 48 lakh applications," he told the recruits.
Over 12,000 women have joined the force, with Shah commending their confidence and readiness.
He also personally handed over appointment letters to 15 constables.
He lauded the state's decision to reserve 20% of posts for women, noting that over 12,000 of the recruits were women. "When I met some of the young women today, their confidence and determination were written all over their faces," he said.
"Uttar Pradesh now has the largest police force in the country, equipped with command centres, AI-based tools, PCR vans, and on-wheel forensic labs.
He urged the new officers to uphold the modern policing ethos of security, service, and sensitivity," he said.
Shah credited CM Yogi Adityanath for restoring law and order in UP. "Before 2017, the state's law and order was in decline but since Yogi ji took charge, UP Police has touched new heights," he said.
He pointed out that police modernisation in UP was stagnant from 2014 to 2017 but transformed post-2017 with Modi-Yogi governance synergy.
Highlighting three new criminal laws, Shah said these reforms would ensure that citizens receive justice from FIR to the Supreme Court within three years.
"You are not just joining a force — you're becoming the face of justice, security, and empathy in 'Amrit Kaal'. Be strict with criminals, but a protector to the poor, backward, and tribal communities," he said.
A total of 60,244 constables, including 12,048 women, were recruited by the UP Police recruitment and promotion board (UPPRPB), which received more than 48 lakh applications.
The recruitment process was completed under the then director of UPPRPB Rajeev Krishna, who is currently the director general of police.
With the Sunday's inductions, the total strength of the force now reached nearly four lakh personnel, which includes around 36,000 women personnel. This strength covers all non-gazetted ranks across various wings of the police, excluding home guards, and marks a significant push toward modernising the police force, a senior police officer added.

Top Court Cancels Appointment Of 2 Members Under Governor's Quota In Telangana

Hyderabad: The Supreme Court Wednesday delivered a significant blow to the Telangana government, nullifying the appointments of Prof M Kodandaram and Amir Ali Khan as Members of the Legislative Council (MLCs) under the Governor's quota. The top court's decision comes after a long-drawn legal battle challenging their nominations. The ruling, which also effectively removed the two men from their positions, stems from a petition filed by Dasoju Sravan and Satyanarayana. The petitioners argued that the appointments were in violation of established norms for Governor's quota nominations, which are intended for individuals with distinguished achievements in fields like literature, science, art, and social service. Prof Kodandaram, a well-known political analyst and the founder of the Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS), and Amir Ali Khan, an editor of the Urdu daily The Siasat Daily, were nominated to the Legislative Council by the state government. The appointments were initially quashed by the Telangana High Court, but the Supreme Court had stayed that order, allowing them to continue in their roles until today's final judgment. The Supreme Court's verdict has once again brought to the forefront the debate surrounding the process of nominating individuals to the Legislative Council under the Governor's quota. The court's decision reinforces the need for nominations to adhere strictly to the criteria laid out for these specific seats. The next hearing in the case has been scheduled for September 17, which may provide more clarity on the future course of action for all parties involved.

SC agrees to constitute search committee for V-Cs' appointments in APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University and Digital University Kerala

The Supreme Court on Wednesday decided to step in to resolve the impasse between the Kerala Governor, who is also the Chancellor of universities, and the State government over the formation of a search committee for the appointment of Vice-Chancellors to the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU) and Digital University Kerala (DUK). A Bench of Justice J.B. Pardiwala and Justice R. Mahadevan said it would appoint the search committee. It asked the State and the Governor to provide, by August 14, four names each for inclusion on the five-member search panel. The court would select four names for the search committee from both lists. The fifth member of the search committee would be nominated by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Justice Pardiwala said neither the Governor nor the State should insist on appointing interim V-Cs. 'Our endeavour is to appoint regular V-Cs. Today the entire problem is with the constitution of a search committee. We will help you out. We will constitute a search committee, which would give an opinion as to who are fit enough to be V-Cs. Then, you (Chancellor-State Governor would sit in consultation with the State government and select one for the digital university and another for the technology university,' Justice Pardiwala addressed Attorney General R. Venkataramani, appearing for the Chancellor-Governor. Mr. Venkataramani said the Governor had only appointed interim V-Cs from serving V-Cs of other universities. 'We had done nothing wrong,' the top law officer submitted. He was referring to how the Kerala High Court had quashed Chancellor's appointment of temporary V-Cs to the universities without consulting with the State government. 'This is not a power struggle. This is a federal issue. We have an underlying common culture in this country. But every State is very different. So, therefore, education is on the Concurrent List. The Chancellor is trying to ensure there is no whiff of Kerala in his appointments. Like this, the federal nature of the process would get diluted,' senior advocate Jaideep Gupta and advocate CK Sasi, appearing for Kerala, submitted. Mr. Gupta said the 'unilateral' appointment of interim V-Cs for six months by the Chancellor was in breach of Section 13(7) of the Technological University Act. The provision mandated that interim V-Cs should be appointed only on the recommendation of the State government'. Justice Pardiwala responded to Mr. Gupta's submission by reading out the court's July 30 order in the case, which said 'in the event a vacancy of Vice-Chancellor arises the Chancellor may appoint a Vice-Chancellor of any other university or the Pro-Vice Chancellor of the university itself or the Secretary to the Government, Higher Education Department 'as recommended by the government'.

Gallantry medals for Operation Sindoor to be announced on Independence Day

Gallantry awards will be announced for defence personnel honoured for their exceptional courage during Operation Sindoor on Independence Day, a senior Defence official said. Operation Sindoor's success will be celebrated at the Independence Day celebrations this year, including its logo on the view cutter at Gyanpath, and themed floral decorations. Defence personnel selected for the awards will be seated at the Red Fort rampart, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will deliver his address to the nation. The PM's address to the nation is expected to highlight the success of Operation Sindoor and the contributions of defence personnel. The celebrations will commemorate 'the continuing rise of a prosperous, secure and bold 'Naya Bharat'', the theme of this year's festivities, 'as the nation is making giant strides towards realising the government's vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047', the MoD stated, adding the celebration will 'provide renewed power to surge further ahead on the path to progress'.. The Indian Air Force will stage a special flypast over the Red Fort, with three helicopters flying in formation carrying the National Flag as well as the Operation Sindoor flag. As in previous years, the aircraft will shower flower petals over the public. Invitations to the event also feature Operation Sindoor on the top right corner, with a sketch of the Chenab railway bridge in the middle replacing the image of the Central Vista previously embossed on the cards. Recently inaugurated by Mr. Modi, the bridge connects the Kashmir Valley to the rest of the country by rail for the first time.
