Salvador Dali painting bought for £150 in UK identified as original
The art dealer who purchased the mixed media piece, who wished to remain anonymous, discovered it had previously been offered for sale at Sotheby's in the 1990s fully attributed to Dali.
The painting is to be offered for sale by Cambridgeshire auctioneers Cheffins on October 23.
Gabrielle Downie, an associate at Cheffins, said: 'The loss of an attribution is quite rare in the modern art world making this a significant rediscovery for Dali scholars.
'To handle a genuine rediscovery of a work by who is easily one of the most famous artists in the world and the godfather of Surrealism, is a real honour'.
It has been an exciting process researching and having this painting authenticated and it is a testament to the sellers' significant art knowledge that he was able to spot this picture at a house clearance sale.
'While Dali's work is often some of the most recognisable, this is an unusual piece which shows a different side to his practice when working in watercolour.'
The artwork, titled Vecchio Sultano, was discovered in a Cambridge-based house clearance sale in 2023.
It has been certified as authentic by Dali expert Nicolas Descharnes and has a pre-sale estimate of £20,000 to £30,000.
The image, made with water colour paint and felt tip, measures 38 cm by 29 cm.
It is an illustration of a scene from The Arabian Nights, a series of 500 pieces which Dali intended to create of Middle Eastern folktales, which was commissioned by wealthy Italian couple Giuseppe and Mara Albaretto.
Downie said: 'The Albarettos who commissioned this work had initially asked Dali to illustrate a bible in 1963, but upon Dali's insistence, he instead ended up illustrating scenes from 1,001 Nights — a collection of Middle Eastern folktales.
'It seems Dali was fascinated with Moorish culture and believed himself to be from a Moorish line'.
It seems that this project was abandoned, with Dali only having completed 100 of the intended 500 works. — PA Media/dpa

Indian Embassy screens short anti-drugs film ‘Paru'
Muscat – Indian Embassy in Muscat hosted a screening of Paru on Monday in the presence of H E GV Srinivas, Indian Ambassador to Oman, as chief guest, and Omani actor Talib al Balushi as guest of honour. Paru is a short film made as part of the World Malayalee Federation's anti-drug campaign. Written and directed by Kabeer Yousuf, Paru tells the story of an Indian couple living in a Gulf state whose drug-addicted teenage son dies prematurely. The tragedy pushes the mother into mental distress, requiring treatment, while the father struggles to cope with his disturbed personal and professional life. The narrative unfolds as a journey through grief, struggle and rediscovery of love. Produced by Ameen Mohammed and Sajimon George under the banner of Bhavalaya, the 37-minute film explores the emotional burden of drug abuse, particularly on mothers who often suffer in silence. Oman-based actors Anita Rajan and Somasundaram play the lead roles, supported by Kiran Hariprasad, Ashok Kumar, Ryan George and Vishruth. The film also features students from Thalassery Brennan HSS in Kerala. Dr J Ratnakumar, founder of Bhavalaya and Global Chairman of World Malayalee Federation, said, 'As an organisation active in Oman for over a decade, our efforts have always aimed to bring people together through art, literature and film.' The film's cinematography, editing and makeup are credited to Vishnu Venugopal, Jaffer PC and Azra Aleem respectively.

Wax lyrical: Taylor Swift gets 13 Madame Tussauds statues
US pop megastar Taylor Swift will be honoured with 13 waxworks of her at Madame Tussauds venues around the globe, the museum said on Wednesday. In honour of Swift's lucky number, 13 of the waxwork museum's 22 branches will each receive a statue of the 'Love Story' and 'Blank Space' singer, in what it called the 'most ambitious project' of its 250-year history. The statues were inspired by some of the 35-year-old songwriting sensation's looks from her record-shattering 'Eras Tour' from 2023 to 2024. With 149 shows across the world over nearly two years, the tour raked in $2 billion, making it the most lucrative in music history to date. More than 40 artists worked for more than a year on the statues of Swift, one of the most acclaimed artists of her generation with 14 Grammy Awards. 'This is the most ambitious project in Madame Tussauds' 250-year history, which only feels right to reflect the stratospheric status of Taylor Swift,' said Danielle Cullen, the museum's senior figure stylist. UK-based Swifties are well served, with one waxwork slated for London and another for the northern seaside resort town of Blackpool. Another 10 will find a permanent home at the branches of Madame Tussauds in Amsterdam, Berlin, Budapest, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Las Vegas, Nashville, New York, Orlando and Sydney.
