The Miami Dolphins have a clear starting quarterback in Tua Tagovailoa, but with his injury concerns, they are unable to neglect the backup position for much longer. The camp competition was between a former first-round pick of the New York Jets, Zach Wilson, and the Dolphins' seventh-round selection from this year, Quinn Ewers.

Wilson, a fifth-year pro, did not record a snap last season with the Denver Broncos, but due to his NFL experience, he likely came into training camp as the favorite to win the job over Ewers. Wilson tossed for 151 yards and a touchdown in the first half of the Dolphins' Week 2 preseason game against the Detroit Lions.
Ewers, who played three years at Texas before being picked by the Dolphins, had a rough start to the preseason but shone in training camp, and his talents showed in the second game of the preseason. Ewers threw for two touchdowns and 116 yards without being sacked and didn't turn the ball over against the Lions.
With one week left to play before the regular season kicks off, Ewers is making his case for the backup quarterback role. The Dolphins hope that this quarterback competition is all for naught, as a healthy season from Tagovailoa is the goal, but if it becomes necessary, they want the best chance to win with the quarterback who has to fill his place.
