SANDAKAN: Libaran MP Datuk Suhaimi Nasir has urged the government to seriously consider and expedite the proposal for a new hospital in the Libaran constituency, citing critical strain on public healthcare facilities at the Duchess of Kent Hospital (HDOK) in here. He said HDOK is now operating beyond its original capacity and is unable to cope with the growing number of patients, not only from Sandakan but also from Libaran, Beluran, Telupid and Kinabatangan.
Advertisement 'The wards are often full, the shortage of beds has become a daily issue, and patients are left waiting or placed along hospital corridors,' he said in a statement on Saturday. Suhaimi also highlighted the worsening parking situation at the hospital. 'The lack of adequate parking spaces continues to complicate matters for patients, their families and hospital staff. 'I have repeatedly raised this issue in Parliament and the Sabah State Assembly over several terms, yet the proposal for a new hospital in Libaran has not been included in any of the 10th, 11th or 12th Malaysia Plans. 'This is deeply disappointing, especially when the population of Sandakan has now exceeded 500,000,' he said. Suhaimi believes that establishing a new hospital in Libaran would not only ease congestion at HDOK but also improve access to healthcare for rural residents, particularly those living far from the city centre. He further called on the Ministry of Health to speed up the deployment of specialists and medical equipment at HDOK, especially in critical areas such as cardiology, anaesthesiology, emergency care and paediatrics services which remain insufficient at the current facility. 'The people of Libaran and the entire east coast of Sabah deserve a fair and efficient healthcare system. This is not a political issue. It is a matter of public welfare and saving lives,' he said. Suhaimi, who is also the Umno Sabah Information Chief, reiterated his commitment to pushing this agenda forward until it is no longer delayed, ensuring that the people of Sabah receive healthcare services on par with other states in Malaysia. 'This is about the well-being and health of the people. Libaran and the east coast of Sabah are entitled to the same healthcare standards as any other region in the country,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Government mulls raising tobacco tax: Anwar

Published on: Thursday, August 07, 2025 Published on: Thu, Aug 07, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: For illustrative purposes only. PUTRAJAYA: The government is considering a proposal to raise the tobacco tax rate, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said on Thursday. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said the proposal aligns with the government's commitment to public health and fiscal reform, particularly given the long-standing moratorium on tobacco tax hikes. Advertisement Malaysia's tobacco tax currently accounts for 58.60 per cent of retail prices. The country has no formal mechanism for periodic adjustments or revaluation of the rate, which was last increased in September 2014. 'I support the spirit (of staying healthy), not just because I don't smoke, but also due to the reach of anti-smoking campaigns,' he said in response to questions on whether the government may revise the tax in Budget 2026, to be tabled in October. Anwar was speaking after attending a Budget 2026 engagement session here today. An economist reportedly suggested raising the rate to between 60 and 75 per cent Advertisement Last week, when announcing the 13th Malaysia Plan, Anwar said the government would broaden its 'pro-health' tax beyond sugary products to also cover tobacco, vapes and alcohol. He said the expanded tax framework aims not only to increase revenue, but more critically, to encourage behavioural change and curb the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). NCDs, commonly associated with unhealthy lifestyles, include heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer. Anwar said healthcare remains a key government priority, noting that the public system is under growing strain from medical inflation, the dual burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases, and an ageing population. According to the parliamentary calendar, Budget 2026 is scheduled to be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat on Oct 10. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Naccol shouldn't be involved in regulating healthcare, says Malaysian Medical Association

Published on: Thursday, August 07, 2025 Published on: Thu, Aug 07, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: MMA president Dr Kalwinder Singh Khaira stressed that Naccol's role is to address cost of living concerns, not regulate healthcare services. (MMA pic) PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) has panned the National Action Council on Cost of Living's (Naccol) role in regulating healthcare services, particularly over the issue of itemised billing and mandatory prescriptions at private clinics. MMA president Dr Kalwinder Singh Khaira stressed that Naccol's role is to address cost of living concerns. Advertisement 'Naccol is not in the field of medical practice and medical laws that were established to protect patients and uphold the standards of safe and effective care,' he said in a statement. He also pointed out that itemised billing is already practised in private clinics, in line with the Private Healthcare Facilities & Services Act 1998, while prescriptions are already covered under the Poisons Act 1952 and the Guidelines for Good Dispensing Practice. Yesterday, domestic trade and cost of living deputy minister Fuziah Salleh told the Dewan Rakyat that Naccol had made several key decisions with regards to healthcare, including mandatory itemised billing and prescriptions for every patient consultation. Kalwinder urged the health ministry to firmly safeguard the integrity and autonomy of the medical profession, following incidents of non-medical Acts being imposed on healthcare facilities. Advertisement 'The regulation and governance of healthcare must strictly remain under the jurisdiction of the health ministry, without interference or overreach by any non-medical Act or other ministries. 'It is imperative that the health ministry stands its ground in ensuring that healthcare policy decisions are guided by medical expertise and professional standards,' he said. Kalwinder also highlighted the sector's concern and frustration with the prolonged inaction on the revision of consultation fees for general practitioners (GPs), which have remained unchanged for 34 years. 'Despite the MMA having raised this issue repeatedly and having brought it up with Naccol, the health ministry and also at all levels of government, there has yet to be any definitive decision on the matter,' he said. He urged this issue to be addressed with 'the urgency and seriousness it deserves' as it affected the sustainability of primary care services by GPs, adding that it should not be pushed around for repeated reviews and studies without any decision. On Sunday, it was reported that the Cabinet had urged the health ministry to fine-tune its proposal for the consultation fee hike and to continue discussions with stakeholders. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
