Gary Lineker will be hosting The Box for ITV after leaving the BBC and details of the new show have now been revealed
Gary Lineker will be hosting The Box for ITV after leaving the BBC. The footballer-turned-broadcaster stepped down from the BBC in May after years of hosting Match of the Day but it has now been revealed that he will front a sports-themed game show for the rival channel.

The programme will see Gary oversee 10 yellow boxes each housing our celebrity contestants as they are transported to unknown locations, before being released to face whatever game awaits on the other side of the door. Every episode will see a string of famous faces confronted with surprising reveals, unique games, and a compelling series arc - as each week two players will face The Duel, a dramatic show finale which will see the loser leaving the competition for good.

Gary said: "I can't wait to host The Box. I've always felt right at home in the box on a football pitch and whilst this is a different proposition, the fundamentals are similar. The contestants will have to quickly and masterfully work out how each game works, whilst also trying to get ahead of the competition to take control. It's going to be unpredictable and thrilling to watch, and I'm excited that I get to have a front row seat to all the action!" It comes after Richard Osman reveals axed Ant and Dec show was 'expensive car crash'.

The series, which originated in Norway last January, will be filmed in the UK later this year and it is expected to hit screens in 2026. Katie Rawcliffe, Director of Entertainment, Reality & Daytime Commissioning ITV said: ' Gary is the perfect fit for The Box, an entertaining, exhilarating and immersive new format.'
Dan Adamson, Chief Content Officer, Twofour said: 'We're delighted to be making The Box with ITV and Seefood TV. From the first time we saw those iconic yellow boxes open in an incredible location we were hooked. Now, with Gary on board we have the ideal Master of Ceremonies to make this real event telly, he is after all a man who knows what it's like under pressure in the box. He's sure to raise the competitive spirit as our cast bursts out of those boxes, into unknown, ambitious and spectacular challenges.'

Gary quit the BBC in May this year after hosting Match of the Day for 26 years. It came after he posted a pro-Palestine video on his Instagram account which featured an 'anti-Semitic' rat emoji from the campaign group, Palestine Lobby.
The presenter quickly deleted the post and issued an apology afterwards. Lineker said he took "full responsibility for this mistake" and the "image does not reflect my views". Announcing his BBC exit at the time, Gary said: " Football has been at the heart of my life for as long as I can remember – both on the pitch and in the studio. I care deeply about the game, and about the work I've done with the BBC over many years. As I've said, I would never consciously repost anything anti-Semitic – it goes against everything I stand for.
"However, I recognise the error and upset that I caused, and reiterate how sorry I am. Stepping back now feels like the responsible course of action."

Gary was originally set to stay on the BBC as the main presenter of next season's FA Cup and World Cup 2026, however he left his BBC position early over the social media post.
Last week, Gary opened up about his exit - revealing that it was the BBC's decision for him to leave the company early. When he was asked in an interview with The New World whether leaving was his choice or a case of 'quit or be quitted', he replied: "The latter."
He added: "I missed it [the rat emoji]. To be honest, I wouldn't have understood the connotations anyway until it was pointed out to me. I genuinely didn't see it. I'm not an idiot. I may not have known it was an anti-Semitic trope, but I would have wondered why someone had put a rat there. Why would you ever conflate a rodent with a human?"

BBC employee claims he was offered cocaine by Strictly star amid drug allegations

A former Strictly Come Dancing employee has alleged that he was offered cocaine by one of its stars at an after party as the BBC launches an investigation into drug use claims A former employee of the BBC has alleged that he was offered cocaine by a Strictly Come Dancing star. The unnamed man, who worked behind the scenes on the broadcaster's dancing competition for a decade, has claimed that he saw a number of its celebrity contestants 'partying' after filming was over and alleged that he saw stars 'drinking and taking drugs' at the time. ‌ The employee claimed that bags of white powder, suspected to be cocaine, were found on two separate occasions in the smoking area and also in the men's toilets. He then claimed that one of its stars offered him some cocaine at a party after filming on the Blackpool stage of the contest had wrapped. ‌ A BBC spokesperson told The Mirror: 'We have clear protocols and policies in place for dealing with any serious complaint raised with us. We would always encourage people to speak to us if they have concerns. It would not be appropriate for us to comment further." ‌ Last week, bosses reportedly launched an investigation into claims that two of its stars took cocaine. The BBC has hired law firm Pinsent Masons to probe the allegations. A source told the Sun, following the breakout news: "The BBC is taking the allegations really seriously. Bosses are aware of the two stars in question and have a duty of care to make sure they're OK." They added: "As per BBC policy, the option of specialised professional support is on the table and will be offered. While drug testing won't happen on the main show, bosses are considering bringing in random checks for the tour next year." ‌ The source claimed the BBC are needing to be sure there are no illegal activities taking place and are waiting for the investigation's findings. It's the latest scandal to rock the long-running series. It comes after drug use claims were submitted to the BBC in March by Russells Solicitors on behalf of a celebrity contestant. It's believed that other individuals have also brought forward allegations of drug consumption on Strictly Come Dancing to the BBC. Earlier in the week, it was reported that one such allegation involved a Strictly star who allegedly commented on another individual's dilated pupils. They are said to have hinted at drug intoxication, saying: "Have you seen their pupils... they're off their face". ‌ And The Sun also claimed that a celebrity alleged it is common knowledge within the show's circle that two stars were using cocaine, a topic that was reportedly rife among the cast. In a statement shared with the Mirror over the weekend, a representative for the BBC said: "We have clear protocols and policies in place for dealing with any serious complaint raised with us. We would always encourage people to speak to us if they have concerns. It would not be appropriate for us to comment further." The fresh blow comes amidst speculation over which famous faces could be set to take to the dancefloor when the show returns in just a matter of weeks.

Mohamed Salah calls out Uefa over tribute to ‘Palestinian Pele' killed in Gaza

The Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has criticised Uefa's tribute to a player known as the 'Palestinian Pelé' after European football's governing body failed to make any reference to the circumstances of his death this week. The Palestine Football Association (PFA) said that Suleiman al-Obeid, 41, was killed by an Israeli strike targeting civilians waiting for humanitarian aid in the southern Gaza Strip on Wednesday. In a brief post on the social media platform X, Uefa called the former national team member 'a talent who gave hope to countless children, even in the darkest of times'. Salah shared the post with the comment: 'Can you tell us how he died, where, and why?' Salah, 33, has previously called for humanitarian aid to be allowed into Gaza. Gary Lineker, the former Match of the Day host who was sacked by the BBC after he was forced to apologise for reposting an antisemitic trope in relation to the Gaza conflict, shared Salah's message before adding: 'We can't hear you Uefa.' Al-Obeid was born in Gaza in 1984 and played 24 games for the Palestinian national team after making his debut in 2007. The statement from the PFA said that armed personnel 'targeted people waiting for humanitarian aid in the southern Gaza Strip'. A former star of the Khadamat al-Shati club in Gaza, the midfielder also played for the Al-Amari Youth Center Club in the West Bank. 'During his long career, Al-Obeid scored more than 100 goals, making him one of the brightest stars of Palestinian football,' the PFA added. Al-Obeid was married and had five children. Since the start of the war in Gaza — triggered by the Palestinian militant group Hamas's attack on Israel in October 2023 — 662 people from the sport and scouting sector have been killed, including 321 in the football community, according to the PFA. Uefa has declined to comment.
