T.J. Watt and Steelers Engage in Ugly Exchange Per Report

T.J. Watt and Steelers Engage in Ugly Exchange Per Report originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
How badly are contract talks going between the Pittsburgh Steelers and T.J. Watt?
So badly — according to one report — that the two sides have exchanged face-to-face insults regarding which side is "fortunate'' to be associated with the other.

By now, NFL fans all understand the essentials here.
Watt and the Steelers are at odds over which direction their contract negotiations should go. Does Watt deserve a contract extension? Fine.
At age 31, should the Steelers be happy to break the bank over a long-term contract? Less than fine.
The superstar EDGE and former NFL Defensive Player of the Year is entering the final season of his deal in 2025 and has been holding out as he seeks an extension from the team. A fair number is certainly over $30 million APY. But Watt's reported demand blows that number out of the water.
During an appearance on the "Rich Eisen Show" on Tuesday, insider Gerry Dulac, who covers the Steelers for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, said Watt wants nothing less than to become the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.

"The stalemate is going to be that T.J. Watt wants to be the highest-paid non-quarterback in the league," Dulac said.
That means Watt is seeking a deal worth over $40 million annually.
Enter another report from a local media person, as in appearing on 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh, NFL insider Aditi Kinkhabwala of CBS Sports shared details on an exchange that reportedly took place ... and got ugly.
'T.J. Watt was openly told, 'You're fortunate to be a Steeler,'' Kinkhabwala alleged. 'And his response was, 'You're fortunate to have me.''
Kinkhabwala continued ...
'The Steelers' attitude, the Steelers' mindset ... is that it is such a privilege to be in this uniform, to wear this uniform,' Kinkhabwala said. 'That, therefore, you should take a hometown discount just because you get to play for one of these cornerstone trademark organizations.'

We wonder if Aditi is sort of paraphrasing here. But if this is even close to being literally accurate? It means these two sides presently have more separating them that money.

Oxford's Geoffrey Esper takes fourth on the Fourth at Nathan's hot dog contest; Chestnut wins again

Geoffrey Esper, the fast-eating teacher from Oxford, placed fourth in Nathan's International Hot Dog Eating Contest on July Fourth at Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York. As expected, the title went to Joey Chestnut, his 17th at the holiday event. Esper's total of 44 hot dogs in 10 minutes was impressive, but not enough to outdo Chestnut's buffet of 70.5 dogs. Once again, Esper wore a worn Boston Red Sox cap during the competition. Esper, 50, has strong ties to Central Mass. He is a teacher at Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School in Charlton and holds bachelor's and master's degrees in physics from Clark University. Esper has a handful of second-place finishes at the holiday event. He placed second a year ago, when Chestnut was sidelined and Patrick Bertoletti emerged with the crown. He placed second to Chestnut the three prior years. This article originally appeared on Telegram & Gazette: Oxford's Geoffrey Esper takes fourth on the Fourth at Nathan's hot dog contest

Packers Named Possible Landing Spot For Former No. 1 Overall Pick

Packers Named Possible Landing Spot For Former No. 1 Overall Pick originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The pressure is on the Green Bay Packers' pass rush to produce more consistent results in 2025. While Green Bay finished with 45 sacks last season, 20 of them came in just three games — including seven against a struggling Tennessee Titans offensive line. Beyond the inflated totals, the underlying metrics were concerning: The Packers ranked 27th in pass-rush win rate, and Rashan Gary, who led the team in pressures, fell short of the 50-pressure mark. Advertisement General Manager Brian Gutekunst made some moves this offseason to strengthen the trenches, drafting edge rushers Barryn Sorrell and Colin Olliver, along with interior lineman Warren Brinson. However, the absence of a high-profile free agent acquisition signals the organization's trust in Jeff Hafley and DeMarcus Covington to get the most out of the defensive line. Still, Green Bay should look for other alternatives. Just look at how the Philadelphia Eagles built a dominant pass rush rotation on their way to a dominant Super Bowl win against the Kansas City Chiefs. Bleacher Report's Matt Holder believes adding a former No. 1 overall pick to their defensive front would be a smart way for Green Bay to create competition for one of their first-rounders. Former Carolina Panthers linebacker Jadeveon Clowney (7) during the second half against the Arizona Cardinals at Bank of America Stadium.© Jim Dedmon-Imagn Images "Lukas Van Ness hasn't lived up to his predraft billing so far, yet he's scheduled to be the Packers' starting defensive end opposite Rashan Gary this season," Holder wrote. "It wouldn't be a bad idea for the Packers to add Clowney to create competition for Van Ness during training camp." Advertisement Jadeveon Clowney has appeared in 12 or more games in five of the past six seasons. Last year, he tallied 44 pressures and 5.5 sacks with the Carolina Panthers—stats that would rank him just behind Rashan Gary as Green Bay's second-most productive pass rusher. "You're always looking. With pass rushers, you can never have enough," Brian Gutekunst said after the 2024 season. "I thought there were times this year we did that, we were able to rush with four men. Every team in the league, that's how you'd prefer to do it, rush with four and affect the quarterback with four. There were periods of times where we didn't do that well enough, everybody understands that. That affects your football team." Green Bay is placing its trust in internal development, which makes sense considering the significant investments they made upfront. Kenny Clark and Rashan Gary carry huge contracts, while Lukas Van Ness and Devonte Wyatt are first-round picks from just three and two years ago, respectively. Still, as Matt Holder pointed out, it wouldn't be a bad idea to add more competition—at least for training camp and preseason—to help elevate the group even further. Fans Confused by NFL's Tua Tagovailoa Post on Friday

Fans Confused by NFL's Tua Tagovailoa Post on Friday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. During the 2024 season, Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa missed a career-high six games due to injuries, including a concussion sustained in the team's Week 2 loss against the Buffalo Bills. Advertisement However, in 11 other starts, Tagovailoa put up some solid numbers, completing 291-of-399 passes for 2,867 yards, 19 touchdowns, seven interceptions and a 101.4 passer rating, while his 72.9 completion percentage led the NFL. Although he missed time, many players are aware of Tagovailoa's talent. On Friday, in an X post, the NFL revealed that the quarterback earned the No. 91 spot on "The Top 100 players of 2025" list. However, not everybody agrees with this placement, as many social media users flocked to the comments section to either disagree with or question the list altogether. "This list was already trash to begin with, but including Tua in the top 100? What the hell are we doing?" Asked one. Advertisement "LOL Tua? How many qbs gonna be on here then, 14? 15?" Said another. "Respectfully, the players are wrong Tired of pretending Tua is all that," a third added. A fourth said, "I'm a Dolphan and a fan of Tua but IMO he doesn't belong in the top 100." "Nah I don't think so," a fifth said. "There's nothing more pointless than NFLs Top 100 Players of each season. Why is this such a thing and when did this nonsense start?" Said another. Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Vinlove-Imagn Images Now, Tagovailoa has the chance to change a lot of people's minds if he can stay healthy and help the Dolphins win their first playoff game since the 2000 season, when they defeated the Indianapolis Colts in the wild-card round. Advertisement The expectations aren't all too high, though, as ESPN BET gives the Dolphins the third-best odds (+700) to win the AFC East, something which they haven't accomplished since 2008.
