Mohali: SAD protests land pooling policy, calls it ‘anti-farmer'

Hindustan Times3 days ago
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) led by its president Sukhbir Singh Badal held a protest outside PUDA Bhawan in Sector 62, Mohali, on Monday, against the Punjab government's land pooling policy, branding it as 'anti-farmer'. The protest—part of SAD's statewide agitation—covered the districts of Mohali, Ropar, and Fatehgarh Sahib. The next protest has been scheduled for August 4 in Bathinda. Addressing the gathering, Badal alleged that the scale of 'land loot' being carried out by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government at the behest of its 'Delhi masters' is unprecedented in Punjab's history. 'There is no development rationale behind this move. Even the 2,000 acres acquired earlier for the Aerotropolis project in Mohali remain unused, yet the government is now moving to seize another 3,535 acres,' he claimed.
Reiterating his party's stand, Badal said SAD would not allow the Punjab government to 'grab even an inch of farmers' land without their consent'. 'I am ready to make any sacrifice, but we will never permit land to be taken forcefully,' he added.
Badal alleged that the state government had stripped farmers of their fundamental right to obtain Change of Land Use (CLU) permissions, even for land not formally acquired. 'There is no precedent for such sweeping deprivation of rights. Tehsildars have already issued orders banning CLU in these areas,' he added.
Drawing a contrast with the AAP's approach, Badal highlighted that the SAD government under late Parkash Singh Badal had implemented land acquisition policies only after consulting farmers. 'Our committee, which included local sarpanches, ensured land rates reflected prevailing market values,' he said.
SAD leader Shamlal Chaudhary echoed the sentiment, calling the policy a 'subtle ploy' by the AAP government to loot the farming community. 'This is not land pooling, it's land looting,' he said, questioning, 'Who will part with one acre of prime land for just a thousand yards in return?'
Several senior SAD leaders, including Dr Daljit Singh Cheema, NK Sharma, Hira Singh Gabria, Parminder Singh Sohana, Gurpreet Singh Raju Khanna, Sarabjit Singh Jhinjar, Sohan Singh Thandal, Darbara Singh Guru, Arshdeep Kler, Ranbir Singh SOI, Gulzari Moonak, Kuldeep Kaur Kang, Charanjit Singh Kalewal, Baljit Singh Bhutta, Ravinder Khera, and Jasbir Kaur, also addressed the gathering.

In BJP's Punjab push, Haryana CM Saini steals a march over CM Mann on Udham Singh martyrdom day

In a move that created ripples in political circles, Haryana Chief Minister and BJP leader Nayab Singh Saini visited Punjab's Sunam to pay tributes to Shaheed Udham Singh on his 86th martyrdom day on Thursday, hours before Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann and the AAP's national convener Arvind Kejriwal reached the legendary freedom fighter's native town in Sangrur district. The Haryana CM's surprise visit to the martyr's memorial not only took place before the Punjab government's function but was also marked with political symbolism. Sporting a saffron turban, Saini paid homage at the Shaheed Udham Singh Memorial, built over nearly 2 acre land in Sunam, and met the martyr's descendants. 'I pay tributes to this son of the soil who couldn't bear the Jallianwala Bagh massacre as a child and avenged it by killing Michael O'Dwyer (Punjab lieutenant governor during the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre) in England. I salute him and his family's sacrifice,' the CM told media persons. In December 2023, the BJP-led Haryana government under then CM Manohar Lal Khattar had declared a state gazetted holiday on Udham Singh's martyrdom anniversary. As Saini replaced Khattar in March next year, July 31, 2024 marked the first time during the former's first term as the CM, when the day was observed as a state holiday. In contrast, for the past several years, Punjab observed only a restricted holiday on July 31. However, the Kamboj community, listed in the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category, and some government employee associations took up the matter this year with the AAP-led Punjab government, demanding the declaration of a state gazetted holiday on July 31. Udham Singh was from the Kamboj community. Sources said the Mann government was also under pressure to do it after Haryana's move. During his Sunam visit, Saini kept the focus on paying homage to Udham Singh. When reporters asked him about the Rs 113 crore bill sent by the Punjab government to Haryana for the upkeep and maintenance of Bhakra canal, he side-stepped the row, just saying, 'Talks are on with the neighbouring state. Both states will sit together to find a solution.' Saini, who belongs to the OBC, was accompanied by Punjab BJP working president Ashwani Sharma. After leading the BJP to a resounding win in the October 2024 Haryana Assembly polls, Saini, 55, has been going all out to boost his credentials as an OBC leader. Besides engaging with prominent OBC organisations and leaders from across the country, he has also been making frequent visits to Punjab. These moves, BJP sources said, are part of Saini's strategy to emerge as an OBC leader at the national level and expand his party's footprint in Punjab slated for the Assembly polls in early 2027. After the Udham Singh Memorial event, Saini also addressed local residents at a BJP-organised meeting. BJP state secretary Daaman Thind Bajwa said,'Our programme was scheduled early to avoid overlap with the Punjab government's function. CM Saini arrived around 10 am via chopper and left at around 11.30 am for Sirsa by road as weather conditions in Sirsa didn't allow flying,' she said. The Punjab government's event was held later in the day in Sunam's grain market area, which was addressed by CM Mann and Kejriwal after they paid floral tributes at the memorial. Sources said that due to waterlogging caused by heavy rainfall in Sunam, the duo had to ride a chopper to reach the grain market, barely a kilometre away from the memorial, which reflected poor drainage in the town. In April this year, Saini had addressed a gathering in Derabassi in Mohali, where Gurdarsan Singh Saini, son of former Akali stalwart Gurnam Singh Derabassi, joined the BJP. Saini also participated in the Saini community events in other Punjab towns like Ropar and Kharar in March-April and had campaigned in Ludhiana in June for the BJP's Ludhiana West bypoll candidate Jiwan Gupta. During his visits to Punjab, Saini has sought to showcase the 'Haryana model' of governance, highlighting how his government has been providing minimum support price (MSP) on 24 crops. He has made this pitch in his Punjab events, trying to woo farmers and rural voters. With the Saini community having influence in nearly 15 constituencies across Punjab – especially in Ropar, Kharar, Derabassi, Mukerian, Banga, and Hoshiarpur – the Haryana CM's outreach in the state appears calibrated. 'The Saini community has always existed in Punjab, but ever since Nayab Singh Saini became CM, he has actively started connecting with them. It's good that the CM is introducing Punjab voters to the BJP's Haryana model,' said a state BJP leader, adding that Saini's Thursday visit also sought to send a political message. The BJP has been struggling to improve its standing in Punjab, with its erstwhile ally, Sukhbir Badal-led Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), with whom it broke up in 2020, also reeling from poll debacles and factional feuds. – With inputs from Varinder Bhatia in Chandigarh

Opposition will derail Punjab's development if voted to power, says Arvind Kejriwal

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener and former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday said that the development trajectory of Punjab would be derailed if the opposition returns to power. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal along with Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann, cabinet minister Aman Arora and senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia at an event in Shaheed Udham Singh Wala town on Thursday. (HT) He made the statement while addressing a public gathering on the martyrdom day of freedom fighter Udham Singh and laying the foundation stone for development projects worth ₹85 crore in Shaheed Udham Singh Wala town. Accompanied by Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann, cabinet minister Aman Arora and senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia, Kejriwal criticised previous governments led by Congress and the Akali-BJP alliance for 'looting public wealth' and 'introducing drugs' into the state. He accused them of misusing power, promoting corruption and neglecting vital sectors like education and healthcare. 'The previous regimes ruined Punjab. They never cared for the youth, hospitals were in shambles and public money was mercilessly looted for personal gain,' Kejriwal said. He added that even after 75 years of Independence, the vision of India's freedom fighters remained unfulfilled due to the actions of such leaders. The event was also a tribute to Shaheed Udham Singh, the legendary freedom fighter who avenged the Jallianwala Bagh massacre by assassinating Michael O'Dwyer in 1940. Chief minister Bhagwant Mann, speaking at the event, highlighted the importance of commemorating martyrs and preserving their legacy. 'It is our solemn duty to honour heroes like Shaheed Udham Singh. He waited 21 years to avenge the massacre, and his courage laid the foundation for India's eventual independence,' Mann said. Mann emphasised that naming airports, universities and institutions after national heroes helps in keeping their sacrifices alive in public memory. He also criticised the British colonial administration for honoring collaborators with titles like 'Sir', citing the example of a family that hosted General Dyer on the very day of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. 'Every inch of this sacred land carries the legacy of our Gurus, saints and martyrs, who showed us how to resist tyranny and injustice,' the CM concluded.

Centre denies clearance to Punjab power and public works department minister Harbhajan Singh for US conference visit

Chandigarh: The Union ministry of external affairs has denied political clearance to Punjab power and public works department minister Harbhajan Singh to attend a conference of state legislators in the United States (US) from Aug 4 to 6. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The minister was scheduled to participate in the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) in Boston, Massachusetts, US. The invitation was extended jointly by the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) and National Legislators' Conference Bharat (NLC Bharat). Harbhajan Singh told TOI, "The conference would have been a good learning experience as a legislator and an opportunity for international exposure. Boston is known as an education hub." When asked about the reason for the denial, he said, "The ministry would know better. With only a few days left, there is no time to pursue the matter. There will be another such opportunity in the future." AAP Punjab spokesperson Neel Garg questioned, "Why is the Modi govt afraid of AAP leaders from Punjab going abroad? Four AAP leaders have been denied political clearance so far. Minister Harbhajan Singh was to represent Punjab's governance model at the NCSL conference in Boston. But the Centre got scared — of truth, of transparency, of a real alternative model. Is foreign diplomacy now @BJP4India's monopoly? Why is AAP being stopped from global platforms? Is this an attack on India's federal structure? We strongly condemn this decision…" In Aug last year, the Centre denied political clearance to Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann for his travel to Paris for the Indian hockey team's quarterfinal match. The MEA cited security reasons for the refusal. In the same month, Punjab assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan was denied political clearance to travel to Kentucky in the US to attend a conference of Speakers of Legislative Bodies from Aug 4 to 7. Before that, Punjab minister Aman Arora was denied political clearance for a Europe visit where he was to go on a knowledge-sharing study tour in Sept 2022. On July 28, the state govt issued a press statement announcing that minister Harbhajan Singh had been invited for the conference in the US in recognition of his "significant contributions to legislative governance and public administration in Punjab."
