DATE confirmed for Orlando Pirates vs Mamelodi Sundowns MTN8 clash

Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns will play each other next weekend in the MTN8 semi-finals.
The giants eased into the semis with wins over Polokwane City and Richards Bay, respectively. The Buccaneers edged out Rise and Shine 2-0 last weekend, while Downs made light work of the Natal Rich Boys with a 4-0 victory.
With the Betway Premiership kicking off this weekend, expect the two teams to have one eye on the semi-final already. Pirates host Sekhunene United at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday looking to put pressure on Sundowns.
The Brazilians travel to the Eastern Cape to face Chippa United this Saturday as they look to defend their championship.
The Buccaneers will host the first leg MTN8 semi-final at the Orlando Stadium on 16 August at 15:00. The last time the two teams met was earlier this year at the FNB Stadium, where Pirates defeated Downs 2-1 in a league match.
In 2023, the two African giants met in the MTN8 final and it was Pirates who emerged victorious over Sundowns after a penalty shootout.
Having won the competition three times in a row, the Buccaneers are once again favourites even against the best side in the league. Masandawana have only won the MTN8 once in the past 17 years and will look to reach their sixth final in three years.
The second leg of the MTN8 match between Pirates and Sundowns will be played in Pretoria however the PSL are yet to announce the date, but it might be towards the end of the month.

‘We have to set a good tone': Pirates captain Sibisi ahead of league opener against Sekhukhune

It's been more than a decade since Orlando Pirates last won the league title, but Bucs' new skipper Nkosinathi Sibisi has called for calm ahead of the start of another campaign where the Soweto giants are expected to do better. Sibisi was part of the team that finished as runners-up to Mamelodi Sundowns in the past three seasons, but has warned that being "obsessed" about wresting the league title from the Brazilians could be their undoing. Everyone seems to agree the squad Pirates have assembled for the 2025-2026 campaign is the strongest they've had in years, and in new coach Abdeslam Ouaddou the Buccaneers may have found someone who can do better than his predecessor Jose Riveiro. Talking to media ahead of their opening league fixture against Sekhukhune United at Orlando Stadium on Saturday (5.30pm), Sibisi insisted every player at Pirates is aware of the need to win the league title but pleaded with everyone not to put unnecessary pressure on them. "For us the league title is in the back of our heads, but we don't want to overwhelm ourselves and look ahead of ourselves," said Sibisi. "We know the league only starts on Saturday against Sekhukhune.

Orlando Pirates told how to catch Sundowns

Former Orlando Pirates captain Lucky Lekgwathi believes the Buccaneers have what it takes to end Mamelodi Sundowns' dynasty in the Betway Premiership, but only if they learn from past mistakes and show greater consistency against so-called smaller teams. Sundowns have set a high standard in recent years, regularly finishing seasons with more than 70 points, with Orlando Pirates' former coach Jose Riveiro dubbing them a 'points machine.' Orlando Pirates finished 12 points adrift of Sundowns last season and a massive 23 points the year before. Chiefs and Pirates news: Mofokeng reports and 25-goal striker With 12 new highly-rated signings, expectations are high at the Orlando Stadium. However, Lekgwathi believes it's not just about high-profile signings or individual quality, it's about taking care of business against every opponent, especially those fighting at the bottom. 'As a team, you need to learn from your mistakes. I hope they have learnt from dropping points against some of the smaller teams,' Lekgwathi told Soccer Laduma . 'If they can rectify that, then they can win it. You need to collect points from the so-called smaller clubs. That's where you win the league,' the Orlando Pirates legend concluded.
