This wild Pedro Pascal movie just got an HBO Max release date

HBO Max is adding new movies all the time, and next month, it's adding "Freaky Tales."
Now, if you're like me, you've quite possibly not even heard of this movie. Which was surprising — it was a Sundance film, distributed by Lionsgate and stars a pair of actors I love in Pedro Pascal and Ben Mendelsohn. It even has a bunch of punks fighting Nazis!
In short, I should have been all over this movie. But somehow it escaped my notice and most everyone else's, because it reportedly only brought in $400K at the box office.
But those who have seen this wild comedy have loved it. It currently has an 89% "hot" rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, even though critics were a bit more muted in their praise.
You'll get to judge for yourself on Friday, Aug. 8, when the movie hits HBO Max. Or, if you're someone who prefers linear HBO to the streaming service, it'll air at 8 p.m. ET the next day (Saturday, Aug. 9) on the premium cable channel. In the meantime, here's what "Freaky Tales" is all about and why this wild comedy needs to be added to your watchlist.
The most important thing to know about "Freaky Tales" is that it doesn't follow a typical plot structure. Instead, there are four vignettes that are loosely interconnected, only really all coming together at the end. It's based on real events and real locations in 1987 Oakland, California.
The first chapter, "Strength in Numbers: The Gilman Strikes Back," focuses on a pair of young punks, Tina (Ji-young Yoo) and Lucid (Jack Champion), who are at an Operation Ivy concert that comes under attack from Nazi punks.

HBO Max gives you tons of hit shows and movies, from HBO Originals to A24 movies and more.
"Don't Fight the Feeling" is the next story, picking up at the same point as the start of the first chapter, but instead focuses on Barbie (Dominique Thorne) and Entice (Normani), who perform as the hip hop duo Danger Zone. They don't go to the Operation Ivy show, but instead are roped into performing with the rapper Too Short.
"Born to Mack" is where Pedro finally arrives. He plays Clint, a career criminal who is looking to get out of the game. When he's asked to pull a job during a Warriors basketball game, that desire to leave crime behind is put to the test.
Finally, there's "The Legend of Sleepy Floyd." This is where the story finally starts to come together. Sleepy Floyd (Jay Ellis) is a star for the Warriors, and it's his house that Clint is supposed to rob. But instead, "The Guy" (Mendelsohn), sends the Nazi punks to rob it and things go horribly wrong.
As I mentioned earlier, audiences are loving this movie for the most part.
Critics are a bit harsher on it, and after combing through the reviews from both parties, this seems to come down to critics judging its (admittedly) loosely connected chapters failing to come together properly in the end.
Ultimately, if you want a wild comedy that doubles as an impressive period piece, then "Freaky Tales" seems like it's worth watching.
It doesn't necessarily stick the landing narratively, but the acting of its loaded cast is sublime, and its recreation of 1987 Oakland has been masterfully done by all accounts. Even Deadline praised the period elements of the movie in its review, saying, "What does work for 'Freaky Tales' is the film's gritty visuals immediately immerse the audience in the look and feel of late-'80s Oakland."

How did 'Fantastic Four: First Steps' compare to 'Superman' at the box office?

Who would win in a box-office smackdown between Superman and the Fantastic Four? Superhero movie fans just got the answer − although it's so close that it's practically a draw. Marvel's "The Fantastic Four: First Steps," starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, opened to an impressive $118 million at the domestic box office this weekend, according to estimates released by Comscore on Sunday, July 27. The anticipated numbers put the film's debut just slightly below that of DC's "Superman," with David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, which opened to $125 million at the North American box office earlier this month. Join our Watch Party! Sign up to receive USA TODAY's movie and TV recommendations right in your inbox Released just two weeks apart, "Fantastic Four" and "Superman" have a lot in common, as both are new interpretations of iconic superhero characters whose recent cinematic renditions were poorly received. The last Fantastic Four movie was the critically reviled 2015 bomb "Fantastic Four," which opened to just $25 million domestically. Superman, meanwhile, was coming off a series of movies from director Zack Snyder, whose darker vision for the character was divisive. The two movies were also similarly crucial for the future of their respective franchises. The stars of "Fantastic Four: First Steps" will return in "Avengers: Doomsday" (expected Dec. 18, 2026), a major event film for Marvel, meaning the group's debut movie performing poorly would have spelled trouble for Disney. The same could be said for DC, given that "Superman" is the first film in a relaunched cinematic universe that has numerous more entries on the way, including next summer's "Supergirl" (June 26, 2026), starring Milly Alcock. In the end, both Marvel and DC can breathe a sigh of relief. "Fantastic Four" and "Superman" not only each opened well at the box office, but also earned positive reviews from critics and the exact same A- grade from audiences polled by CinemaScore, a research firm that surveys moviegoers at theaters. Also breathing a sigh of relief? Movie theaters, which had a strong July between the pair of superhero blockbusters and "Jurassic World Rebirth" with its solid $148 million five-day holiday debut at the start of the month. But not even superheroes and dinosaurs were enough to steal the seasonal box-office crown from "Lilo & Stitch." After snagging a huge $146 million three-day debut in May, the Disney live-action remake still holds the title of biggest opening weekend of the summer, and it's the only Hollywood movie to pass $1 billion worldwide so far this year. "First Steps" is the first "Fantastic Four" film released as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, after the characters were previously owned by 20th Century Fox. It's also Marvel's third movie of 2025, after "Captain America: Brave New World" and "Thunderbolts*," but first to open to more than $100 million domestically over three days.

Pedro Pascal Explains Why He'll Never Shave Again After This Film: 'I Was Appalled'

We may all know and love Pedro Pascal as the internet's favourite incredibly charming moustached man, but there's one role that the Fantastic Four star says made him swear off the clean-shaven look forever – Wonder Woman 1984. The 50-year-old's facial hair is a key part of his trademark look but when he took on the part of television-personality-turned-villain Maxwell Lord in Patty Jenkin's 2020 clean-shaven sequel, the star was required to shave the lot off. In an interview with LADbible, alongside his Marvel co-star Vanessa Kirby, he was asked which was sexier, moustaches or beards. 'I grow such s*** facial hair,' Pedro commented. 'I were to shave it all off, I really look very [awful]. Strongly disagree with a clean-shaven me. 'I was so appalled by the way I look in Wonder Woman 1984. I loved the movie, but I was so appalled by the way that I looked that I never have gone back unless it were completely necessary. 'If they asked me to be clean-shaven for , and insisted, then I would've done it. But it was a very collaborative creation for all of our looks in the movie.' Fortunately for Pedro (and let's be real, for us too), he wasn't required to reach for the razor for the role of Reed Richards – although some Marvel fans weren't happy with the Mandalorian actor's casting. 'I'm more aware of disgruntlement around my casting than anything I've ever done,' he previously told Vanity Fair. 'He's too old. He's not right. He needs to shave,' Pascal said, sharing the swathes of online complaints surrounding his latest role. While the movie hits UK cinemas this week, it's been confirmed that the quartet will also be appearing among the all-star cast of Avengers: Doomsday MCU on screen for the first time.

'The Reach Around': Pedro Pascal And His Fantastic Four Co-Stars Got A Look At His Popcorn Bucket, And They Had Some Dirty Thoughts

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Ever since the NSFW Dune: 2 popcorn bucket took the internet by storm last year, special containers for this movie theater snack staple have been more abundant. The Fantastic Four: First Steps is the latest 2025 movie to get in on the popcorn bucket action, and I'm not just talking about the $80 Galactus one. Pedro Pascal's Mister Fantastic also got his own popcorn bucket, and The Mandalorian actor and his co-stars from the new Marvel movie had some dirty thoughts upon seeing it. Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Joseph Quinn bore witness to the glory of the Mister Fantastic popcorn bucket when Jimmy Kimmel Live! guest host Alan Cumming presented it to him. Cumming, who will co-star with these four when he reprises Nightcrawler in next year's Avengers: Doomsday, then pointed out how when positioned in a certain way, this popcorn bucket can also look NSFW: At first glance, there's nothing that looks particularly sexual about this popcorn bucket. It's just Mister Fantastic using his stretching ability to hold what is, from his perspective, a giant popcorn bucket. But then Alan Cumming rotated the bucket until it looked like Reed Richards has wrapped his extendable penis around the bucket. As Pedro Pascal was laughing upon seeing the bucket for the first time, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who plays Ben Grimm/The Thing, dropped this A+ comment: It's the reach around. More Fantastic Four Stories How Would Reed Richards And Tony Stark Interact If They Met? Pedro Pascal Has An Idea Marvel Stars Rocked Futuristic Retro Looks At Fantastic Four: First Steps' Premiere (And I'm Obsessed) Well done, sir! Well done. After getting the NSFW jokes out of the way, Alan Cumming passed the popcorn bucket to Vanessa Kirby, who's playing Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman. Pedro Pascal got a kick out the little version of his character, especially how it serves as the bucket's handle. And while Kirby shared some of the popcorn with Joseph Quinn, a.k.a. Johnny Storm/The Human Torch, she decided to keep the popcorn bucket in her possession, which Cumming quipped she was allowed to do because she's pregnant. If you'd like to get your own Mister Fantastic popcorn bucket, it'll cost you $39.99 at your nearest Cinemark theater. Over at Regal Cinemas, you'll have the option of buying a Fantasticar popcorn bucket for $56.95. You can also find the Galactus popcorn bucket at both theater chains, as well as AMC. The Fantastic Four: First Steps is now playing in theaters, with the aforementioned actors being joined by Ralph Ineson, Julia Garner and Paul Walter Hauser, among others. It'll be fine for kids to eat popcorn from the Mister Fantastic bucket as they're watching Marvel's First Family's return to the big screen, but maybe don't take a cue from Ebon Moss-Bachrach and refer to it as the 'reach around' in front of them.
