'I swapped my moisturiser for a £12 Korean sunscreen and my skin is much better'

Daily Mirror13-05-2025

This SPF50+ from Korean skincare brand Beauty of Joseon, which is currently going viral, has become a new staple in my summer morning routine, says our writer
Having heard all about the wonders of Korean skincare products, renowned for their use of ingredients that give a radiant glow, I recently made a switch in my routine. I swapped in the viral Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Rice + Probiotics SPF 50+, which is currently on sale at LookFantastic, reduced to £12.40 from £15.50 – and it's completely taken over as my daily moisturiser.
Its lightweight, non-greasy formula has an SPF 50+, offering super-high protection against sun damage and premature ageing. The first thing you'll notice is that it doesn't feel like sunscreen at all, instead leaving your skin feeling hydrated with a subtle healthy glow.
I found that my skin felt so quenched that I didn't need to use a separate moisturiser, and it also sits really well underneath make-up, which can be a challenge to find with sunscreens. The only drawback I find is that the bottle isn't massive, so it may run out quickly, but it's a handy size to carry around.
Supreme Screen SPF 50+ Hydrating SKINSCREEN by Australian brand Ultra Violette is another popular facial sunscreen choice. This one is currently discounted at Boots, down to £27.20 from £34.
Lookfantastic has also slashed 20% off La Roche-Posay Anthelios Suncream SPF50+, which is fragrance-free and designed for sensitive skin types. Usually retailing at £20, it's now down to £16, reports the Liverpool Echo.
Yet it's the affordability and simplicity of the Beauty of Joseon SPF that clinches it as my top pick. Rice water, which this product contains, is known for its skin-brightening properties and its ability to address pigmentation and uneven skin tone. After using it for a couple of weeks, I've not seen a dramatic change in my skin's overall tone, but it certainly feels nourished and hydrated post-application.
This viral Korean SPF has also collected an impressive average of 4.77 out of five stars on Lookfantastic's website. A happy customer commented: " This is truly the best SPF I have used. It stayed great under make-up, didn't make me super oily. Left me looking healthy and glowy with no residue feeling."
Another remarked: "I love this sun cream! It's so lightweight and skin is left looking dewy - not greasy. No white cast either so a big plus!"
A third person wrote: "On my 100th tube and will never stop repurchasing. LF offer was beyond fantastic!" – clearly, it's become a firm favourite in many skincare routines
However, as someone with normal to oily skin, I recognise that those with dry skin might not find it sufficiently moisturising. One reviewer noted: "It's very light and watery. I need another moisturiser under it because it's not thick enough for my dry skin." For those seeking extra hydration, perhaps Ultra Violette's hydrating option would be more appropriate.

The Best Korean Haircare Products To Try Now

As far as regional beauty markets are concerned, South Korea has steadily established itself as the hotspot. Churning out the kind of trailblazing trends (read: glass skin) and industry-shaking products (think: BB creams, collagen jelly creams and sheet masks) that TikTokers and experts alike are quick to get on board with. Dubbed K-beauty, it's the skin and make-up category that many established brands around the world routinely look to for cues when developing their own products. Leading with innovative formulations, new-gen delivery systems and unique ingredients, the K-beauty appeal has transcended social media feeds and landed on the high street in very little time at all. And now it's coming for your hair. Since 2024, Boots has stocked its shelves with viral beauty products from leading K-beauty brands like Beauty of Joseon, Anua, and Medicube and this week the high street giant unveiled a brand new influx of K-beauty haircare. In its annual Beauty Trends Report 2025, Boots identified 'beauty without borders' as one of the biggest beauty trends of the year and predicted that Korean skincare would continue to hit the mark with UK consumers. As for haircare, Boots' move into this K-beauty market is timely. TikTok searches for #koreanhaircare more than doubled in the second half of May with a spike of 117%. As a response, Boots has brought Korea's number one shampoo brand - Kundal - and traditional herbal remedy experts, Daeng Gi Meo Ri, into the fold, to provide customers with new high-tech hair solutions, all while giving K-beauty megafans more reason to head to its beauty halls. Much like its skincare offerings, Korean haircare goes big on innovative ingredient-led formulas. Just as K-beauty's focus is on a fostering a healthy skin barrier, so in haircare its MO is to nourish the skin on our scalps. This explains the new wave of Korean head spas cropping up in the UK and hitting your social media feeds. Grace Vernon, head of global foresight and trends at Boots and No7 Beauty Company, explains, 'Korean haircare stands out globally for its ability to combine the most cutting-edge innovation, multi-functional formulas and luxurious quality at an accessible price point. Korean haircare is rooted in the same philosophy that made K-Skincare such a global phenomenon, focusing on scalp health, preventative care, and holistic wellbeing. The products offer a more comprehensive approach than many traditional haircare systems, often with multiple benefits such as anti-hair loss, scalp soothing, and long-lasting results built into a single formula like Daeng Gi Meo Ri Dlae Soo Hair Care Shampoo, £22.' The very rituals that made K-beauty stand apart from its counterparts, like 'the ritualisation of self-care, a holistic approach to beauty and health, use of herbal and natural ingredients, and the layering of multi-step routines,' is similarly what underpins Korean haircare says Vernon, 'as with beauty, haircare is viewed as a vital form of self-care and inspired by the multi-step Korean skincare routines such as scalp cleansing, treatments, and leave-in care to achieve optimal results.' ‘So glossy' £17 shine-boosting hair mask that rivals professional treatments

Shoppers are praising the glossy, shiny results of this new five-minute hair mask, saying it leaves your hair looking like you've just stepped out of the hair salon Shiny hair always looks expensive, we think, but it's not always easy to achieve; dry, damaged or bleached hair in particular can often struggle to reflect the light in a flattering way without the help of professional treatments. However, shoppers think they've hit upon an at-home solution that gives salon-worthy shine for a fraction of the price. Moroccanoil's new High Shine Gloss Mask has stacked up dozens of really impressive five-star reviews online, with shoppers calling it "a must-have in between salon visits" and "one of the best hair masks [they] have ever used". While a large 200ml tube costs £28 from retailers such as Lookfantastic and Sephora, you can also buy a smaller 75ml bottle for £17 – ideal if you want to try it out for less first. Formulated with something called 'ArganID technology', this five-minute mask "instantly boosting shine while also revitalising hair colour between appointments", says Moroccan oil. In the brand's trials, 95% of users said it gave their hair a gloss-like finish, while 96% said hair felt richly conditioned. And Sephora shoppers clearly agree. "I have to say I really liked this mask. After using it, my hair felt super soft and had such a beautiful shine. It wasn't greasy or heavy, just smooth and glossy in the best way. I got a bunch of compliments, which never hurts!" one person wrote, adding, "What really surprised me was how long it it's one of those products I'd definitely keep using when I want my hair to look extra polished without a ton of effort." "It is quick and easy to use. My hair felt so soft, smooth and shiny. It made it look healthy and my hair colour is more vibrant," another review reads. " I felt like I just got off the salon after this treatment. Highly recommend." A third person agreed, writing: "The high class shine mask is literally perfect for my hair. I always love the scents of Moroccan oil products and this one is no exception. Even my husband asked if I had just gone to the salon after using this product." Not every customer was completely won over though, with one person calling it "a really nice shine treatment" but saying that "I personally have very fine, thin hair and do feel like this weighs my hair down vs similar products I've tried." If this sounds like something you might be concerned about too, you might want to instead try something like OUAI Fine-Medium Hair Treatment Masque, £34, or Philip Kingsley's cult classic Elasticizer Intensive Treatment, currently reduced to £31.20.
