Zetrix AI to promote use of NurAI to global Muslim population

The Sun5 days ago
KUALA LUMPUR: Zetrix AI Bhd, formerly known as MY EG Services Bhd, is eyeing a global Muslim population of two billion with NurAI, the world's first syariah-aligned large language model (LLM).
Co-founder and head of AI development Datuk Fadzli Shah said the initial rollout will cover Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei, a combined market of 340 million people with majority following the Shafi'i school of thought, before expanding to other madhhab.
'Yes, we have active plans for those and we have partnerships in place to be able to address those markets,' he told reporters at the launch of NurAI today.
He described the 'One Madhhab at a Time' strategy as a deliberate and scalable approach.
'As we fine-tune this for a specific madhhab, it will help inform us on how to handle the model when we cross to serve the second, third and ultimately the fourth madhhab.'
Developed with China's DeepSeek, Fadzli said there is little to no risk of state intervention from either Asean or China.
'From a governance perspective, although we are grateful that this initiative originated from the Asean-China AI Lab, there is no influence from any government,' he said.
He said that NurAI remains an independent project focused on its purpose as a syariah-aligned and syariah-based LLM.
'Having said that, we welcome partnerships with all states to further not only their local Muslim communities but also others who can benefit from the worldview of a syariah-aligned LLM.'
Built on Islamic principles and reflecting the Global South worldview, NurAI delivers guidance aligned with syariah rulings across a wide range of subjects, from contemporary issues such as law, healthcare and finance to classical themes including Islamic history, philosophy and Quranic studies.
The platform will feature specialised channels, including an Islamic finance channel developed in partnership with INCEIF University, an affiliate of Bank Negara Malaysia, alongside channels led by Islamic scholars worldwide.
Looking forward to the rest of FY2025, Fadzli said Zetrix will be exploring ways to integrate its two core technologies, blockchain and AI, as part of its long-term growth strategy.
'What we're most excited about is to get the AI part of our vertical strategy to be better tested.'
He added that the company will announce several initiatives to improve the usability and stickiness of its services.
'We see blockchain as the data layer, which stores and references information, and AI as the processing layer,' he said.
He said Zetrix will look to work with the best, whether through collaborations with ecosystem partners or by hiring top talent.
'Competing in this space is a global challenge, so we are working to build strong, borderless teams that can collaborate across technologies.'
In April, Zetrix was appointed the core chain for the Malaysia Blockchain Infrastructure, a government-linked initiative with Mimos Bhd aimed at linking various blockchain systems and making the technology more accessible across industries.
The platform is also integrated with China's national blockchain network to enable secure trade facilitation and digital identity exchange between Asean and China.

Mosque in Batu Kawah receives brand-new funeral van, thanks to foundation

Dr Sim (centre) joins others in a photo-call, taken during the symbolic handing-over of the funeral van to the mosque committee. KUCHING (Aug 17): Masjid Darus Sakinah of Kampung Sinar Budi Baru in Batu Kawah here has received its first-ever 'van jenazah' (funeral van), donated by Yayasan OBYU. Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian performed the official handing-over ceremony at the mosque today. 'This is a very historic moment for Masjid Darus Sakinah, as this is the first 'van jenazah' ever received by the mosque. 'The contribution of a unit of Foton View C2 2.8L (Manual) Diesel Year 2024 worth RM140,949.10, is indeed most timely and meaningful,' said the Batu Kawah assemblyman in his speech. He added that the van, along with the mosque's fully-equipped 'bilik jenazah' (funeral room) would greatly ease the burden off the bereaved Muslim families. 'With complete and proper facilities, funeral arrangements can now be carried out in a more efficient manner, in accordance with the syariah (Islamic requirements). 'I therefore sincerely hope that Masjid Darus Sakinah will make the best use of this contribution with great care and responsibility, so that it may serve the community for many years to come,' he added. Dr Sim also commended Yayasan OBYU, a non-profit organisation under OBYU Holdings Sdn Bhd, for its continuous contributions. 'Today marks the third donation from Yayasan OBYU, and it is indeed a testament to their dedication in uplifting the welfare of society,' he said. The Deputy Premier further highlighted the collaborative nature of the initiative. 'We really want not only 'Sarawak Maju dan Makmur' (Progressive And Prosperous Sarawak), but also 'Batu KawaH Maju dan Makmur'. 'The mosque expansion is one part of it, but we're very lucky to have OBYU coming in with the car component. 'That is the best example of how, when we come together, we can achieve wonders. 'This 'van jenazah', even though it looks simple, is very important for the village because the whole Batu Kawah had none before. 'That's why this facility, together with the bilik jenazah', are such a complete package,' he added. Also present were OBYU Holdings founder and advisor Tan Sri Bustari Yusuf, Yayasan OBYU chairman Datu Dr Hatta Solihi, Yayasan OBYU trustee Dato Ahmadi Yusoff, Kampung Sinar Budi Baru headmanWain Sulaiman, and Masjid Darus Sakinah Kampung Sinar Budi Baru committee chairman Sarum Putit. donation Dr Sim Kui Hian funeral van Kampung Sinar Budi Baru

Tabung Haji denies RM20mil rebranding allegation

KUALA LUMPUR: Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) has denied that it spent RM20mil on rebranding, calling it a false and defamatory allegation. In a statement, TH clarified that the actual cost for the brand rejuvenation process was RM2mil per year over a three-year period. 'Efforts to strengthen the brand have been undertaken multiple times as a vital investment aimed at changing mindsets and encouraging Muslims to save systematically in order to fulfil the requirements for performing the haj,' it said. TH said the rebranding process also involved market surveys and engagement with depositors to better understand their needs while taking into account demographic shifts within the Muslim community in Malaysia. 'The claim that TH need not strengthen its well-known brand after 60 years of operation is also inaccurate,' said the statement. As of now, TH has 9.6 million depositors, which accounts for about half of the Muslim population in the country. According to TH, over 53% of depositors hold savings of less than RM1,300, which is significantly below the estimated RM15,000 needed for a pilgrim from the B40 group to undertake the haj in 2025. 'Over 80% of the depositors' financial transactions are carried out online. Therefore, TH plans to launch a campaign to encourage Muslims to save early, consistently and systematically to build sufficient savings, while ensuring stable investments for the institution's sustainability,' the statement said, Bernama reported. TH stated that its board of directors had chosen to reassess the agency's strategy in order to maintain competitiveness, enhance service quality, and appeal to a younger demographic of Muslims as potential depositors.

Malaysia Records 1.8 Million Chinese Tourist Arrivals In First 5 Months

Nearly 1.8 million visitors from China travelled to Malaysia between January and May this year, following the government's decision to introduce a visa waiver for Chinese nationals. Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan said the policy, which took effect in 2024, had driven a sharp rise in arrivals, from 1.6 million in 2023 to 3.4 million last year. 'Among these efforts, we invited more than 100 imams from China and Europe to experience first-hand Malaysia's Muslim-friendly tourism concept, which is suitable for people of all backgrounds and religions,' he told the Dewan Rakyat during the oral question-and-answer session today. He was replying to Datuk Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik (PH–Balik Pulau), who had asked about the ministry's measures to attract Muslim tourists from China. Khairul Firdaus added that the ministry, together with the travel agency association, was actively pursuing promotional campaigns targeting Chinese tourists, particularly those seeking Muslim-friendly experiences. In response to a separate question from Wan Hassan Mohd Ramli (PN–Dungun) on ensuring the east coast states also benefit economically, the deputy minister said integrated promotions were being undertaken via Tourism Malaysia and the Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC). These, he said, highlighted attractions such as the Crystal Mosque to audiences in ASEAN, Europe, China, Japan and South Korea. 'However, it is also closely linked to the culture of the local community and when we are able to promote these elements, it will create spillover benefits for industries such as homestays, handicrafts and traditional foods,' he said.
