Malaysia launches world's first syariah-compliant AI app
KUALA LUMPUR: The launch of NurAI, the world's first syariah-compliant application, is a technological solution to address factual inaccuracies related to Islamic fatwas and rulings that are often conveyed through artificial intelligence (AI) content on Western platforms. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pic)said NurAI, which is based on the Large Language Model concept and developed entirely based on Islamic values, not only processes language but also understands manners, preserves the law and upholds the cultural dignity of Muslims. Ahmad Zahid, who officiated the launch, also said the application took into account that most AI systems are developed in the West 'but the values and priorities they bring are not necessarily in line with our way of life and aspirations,' Bernama reported. 'In fact, there are studies that have found that there are AI content related to Islam on Western platforms that contain bias or factual inaccuracies, thus presenting a negative image of our religion and culture. 'We have witnessed how AI systems give answers that contradict syariah principles when asked about Islamic financial law or quote unauthentic sources when discussing aqidah issues. This is a gap that we must close and InsyaAllah, I am confident that NurAI can do it,' he said. Ahmad Zahid added that this shift is not only a symbol of innovation, but also serves as an instrument of technological diplomacy in positioning Malaysia as a leader in syariah-compliant AI. 'It also opens the door to strategic cooperation with Asean countries and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, thus strengthening Malaysia's influence on the international stage. 'Make this platform the basis for shaping the thinking of the community, answering questions about halal and haram, providing guidance on zakat and faraid, providing syariah-compliant investment advice openly and ultimately guiding the community based on true and recognised Islamic disciplines,' he said. Ahmad Zahid hoped that the launch of NurAI would mark the start of a major movement involving the entire national ecosystem.

Syariah-compliant AI launched
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia aims to lead the world in syariah-compliant artificial intelligence (AI) with the launch of NurAI, the first syariah-compliant large language model, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. He said NurAI builds on Malaysia's strengths as a global leader in halal certification, Islamic finance and syariah scholarship, positioning the nation to become a trusted digitalisation hub for the Islamic world. 'With consistent, strategic steps, Malaysia can lead in syariah-compliant AI, a field that will shape the future of the ummah, built on values and guided by divine revelation,' he said at the launch by Zetrix AI Bhd yesterday. He said the homegrown platform would safeguard Islamic principles while advancing national technological ambitions. 'We all know the 21st century is the Century of Data. Whoever controls data controls the narrative, whoever controls the narrative controls the future.' Ahmad Zahid said NurAI, developed entirely on Islamic values, goes beyond processing language to uphold adab (proper etiquette), respect the law and elevate Muslim culture. He said most AI systems are developed in the West or other major powers where priorities often do not align with Islamic principles, and cited studies showing bias or inaccuracies in online content about Islam. 'This risk arises when fatwa and rulings are quoted inaccurately or when subtle negative portrayals are embedded. There have been cases where AI contradicted syariah principles or cited unauthentic sources on aqidah. This is the gap we must close.' He outlined plans for a Global Syariah AI Reference Centre, AI integration in Islamic education, applications for mosque administration, zakat management, Quran teaching and international research collaborations grounded in Islamic values.

Zetrix AI to promote use of NurAI to global Muslim population
KUALA LUMPUR: Zetrix AI Bhd, formerly known as MY EG Services Bhd, is eyeing a global Muslim population of two billion with NurAI, the world's first syariah-aligned large language model (LLM). Co-founder and head of AI development Datuk Fadzli Shah said the initial rollout will cover Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei, a combined market of 340 million people with majority following the Shafi'i school of thought, before expanding to other madhhab. 'Yes, we have active plans for those and we have partnerships in place to be able to address those markets,' he told reporters at the launch of NurAI today. He described the 'One Madhhab at a Time' strategy as a deliberate and scalable approach. 'As we fine-tune this for a specific madhhab, it will help inform us on how to handle the model when we cross to serve the second, third and ultimately the fourth madhhab.' Developed with China's DeepSeek, Fadzli said there is little to no risk of state intervention from either Asean or China. 'From a governance perspective, although we are grateful that this initiative originated from the Asean-China AI Lab, there is no influence from any government,' he said. He said that NurAI remains an independent project focused on its purpose as a syariah-aligned and syariah-based LLM. 'Having said that, we welcome partnerships with all states to further not only their local Muslim communities but also others who can benefit from the worldview of a syariah-aligned LLM.' Built on Islamic principles and reflecting the Global South worldview, NurAI delivers guidance aligned with syariah rulings across a wide range of subjects, from contemporary issues such as law, healthcare and finance to classical themes including Islamic history, philosophy and Quranic studies. The platform will feature specialised channels, including an Islamic finance channel developed in partnership with INCEIF University, an affiliate of Bank Negara Malaysia, alongside channels led by Islamic scholars worldwide. Looking forward to the rest of FY2025, Fadzli said Zetrix will be exploring ways to integrate its two core technologies, blockchain and AI, as part of its long-term growth strategy. 'What we're most excited about is to get the AI part of our vertical strategy to be better tested.' He added that the company will announce several initiatives to improve the usability and stickiness of its services. 'We see blockchain as the data layer, which stores and references information, and AI as the processing layer,' he said. He said Zetrix will look to work with the best, whether through collaborations with ecosystem partners or by hiring top talent. 'Competing in this space is a global challenge, so we are working to build strong, borderless teams that can collaborate across technologies.' In April, Zetrix was appointed the core chain for the Malaysia Blockchain Infrastructure, a government-linked initiative with Mimos Bhd aimed at linking various blockchain systems and making the technology more accessible across industries. The platform is also integrated with China's national blockchain network to enable secure trade facilitation and digital identity exchange between Asean and China.

Zetrix AI targets newly launched NurAI chatbot to fintechs, government bodies
PETALING JAYA: Zetrix AI Bhd (formerly My E.G. Services Bhd ) aims to offer its newly launched NurAI chatbot to financial institutions, fintechs, legal authorities and government bodies. In a statement, Zetrix AI director Datuk Mohd Jimmy Wong Abdullah said the rollout of NurAI is designed to be phased and progressive. 'It will begin with a freemium B2C (business-to-consumer) app in Malaysia and Indonesia, offering general Shariah guidance alongside premium features such as inheritance calculators and medical bioethics advice. 'The second phase will focus on institutional integration via B2B (business-to-business) and B2G (business-to-government) models, enabling implementation of NurAI into the daily operations of Islamic financial institutions, fintechs, halal certification bodies and Shariah legal authorities.' NurAI is the world's first Shariah-aligned, Islamic values-based large language model. Based on Islamic principles and reflective of the Global South worldview, Zetrix AI said NurAI offers guidance consistent with Shariah rulings on a comprehensive spectrum of subject matters ranging from contemporary topics, such as law, healthcare and finance, to classical Islamic themes that include history, Islamic philosophy and Quranic studies. 'With the launch of NurAI, Malaysia not only cements its leadership in halal certification, Islamic finance, and Shariah scholarship, but also in ethical AI innovation. 'Zetrix AI's continued investment in Shariah-aligned technologies signals a long-term commitment to developing responsible, values-based digital infrastructure for Muslim communities worldwide,' said the company. Moreover, Zetrix AI noted that current AI systems, developed primarily in Western and Chinese contexts, may not fully reflect Islamic perspectives. 'This leaves a clear gap for the two billion Muslims, the US$3 trillion Islamic economy and the wider Global South, where users seek artificial intelligence (AI) tools that align with their cultural values, religious principles, and development priorities. 'NurAI meets this need by offering a Shariah-aligned alternative for markets underserved by existing platforms.' The company added that it also supports the growing demand for AI sovereignty and Shariah-aligned technology from governments and institutions across Malaysia, Indonesia and the Gulf Cooperation Council.
