It would take a lot to leave Macclesfield
Macclesfield FC boss Robbie Savage says it would need a 'really special' job offer to prise him away from his title-winning team.
The Silkmen wrapped up the Northern Premier League Premier Division title with six games to spare on Saturday in Savage's first season as manager.
Club owner Robert Smethurst had said they would be lucky to hold on to him, but the former Wales international said he had already turned one job offer down from a higher level.
"It's my club and it's not very often you can manage your club, the one you've built from the first brick with your best friend, so it would take an awful lot for me to leave," Savage told BBC Radio Manchester.
"There's League One and League Two clubs I wouldn't go to if they offered me the job now because I can't see the journey or the project.
"It's not about money for me. I'm probably the only unpaid manager in the league. It's not for money, it's for the journey."
The former Premier League captain and media pundit helped Smethurst relaunch a new club in the Cheshire town after Macclesfield Town was wound up in 2020.
But after losing at the play-off stage last season, the former Leicester City and Derby County midfielder admits he was ready to walk away if they missed out for a second successive campaign.
"In the non-league circuit, a lot of people wanted me to fail, no doubt about that," he said.
"If we had failed I would have left the football club and given up my shareholding because I couldn't have come back, so everything was on the line."
Savage believes it will be "difficult" to keep his team together, but has already set high targets for their first season in National League North, the second tier of the non-league ladder.
"If I can keep this group together we're not going to the league above and just settle for mid-table," he said.
"We want to win it, or minimum the play-offs. That's the benchmark."

Is Matheus Cunha a better player than Alejandro Garnacho? BBC Radio Manchester's Gaz Drinkwater believes so, urging Manchester United to cash in on Garnacho in order to make room for new summer signings. Promoted Merthyr to compete in National League North
They are the football club proud to come from the south Wales valleys – but have been told they will be a 'northern' team next season. There were huge celebrations when community-owned Merthyr Town won the Southern Premier League South title. But it has been confirmed they will now play in the National League North next term – with 300-mile away trips to Darlington and South Shields among their away days in a regionalised division. In front of more than 3,000 fans at Penydarren Park last month, the part-time outfit sealed promotion to English football's sixth tier, their highest level in 30 years. The Martyrs had played in the Western and Southern Leagues since being reformed after Merthyr Tydfil's liquidation in 2010. And the club had been aware the potential make-up of the teams next season at sixth tier level – and the large contingent of teams from the south of England - could see them having to plan to head north. Three south of England sides, Dagenham & Redbridge, Ebbsfleet and Maidenhead, dropping out of the fifth-tier National League would have given organisers a headache in how to split clubs. The National League confirmed its allocations for the 2025-26 season on Thursday, although says those are subject to appeal. A Football Association spokesperson said: "We make every effort each season to allocate National League System [NLS] clubs to the most geographically suitable league possible. "The clubs are allocated to a league based on the step in the NLS that they will be playing in, and their location in the country. These allocations are subject to appeals. "Geographical suitability continues to play an important part in NLS allocations, and we always try to balance this against the number of teams in each division to ensure sporting integrity is maintained." 'Merthyr can go as far as people want' Merthyr Town owners vote against Cymru Premier move Merthyr are not alone in the anomaly: Oxford City, Hereford United and Bedford Town have also been placed in National League North, whose other new clubs include Robbie Savage's Macclesfield Town. The game at Hereford's Edgar Street will be Merthyr's shortest away day, with a 43-mile, one-way trip taking around an hour. But it will take fans – and players – as much as 12 hours on the road in a round-trip for their game at South Shields. At the time of their promotion, chairman Les Barlow said their placing would make "no difference" as they revelled in a season in which they enjoyed a 32-game unbeaten run. Merthyr won the Welsh Cup in 1987 and went on to upset Italian giants Atalanta in the following season's European Cup Winners' Cup. Last season, they turned down a lucrative offer from the Football Association of Wales to join the Welsh league system, a decision manager Paul Michael says was vindicated by their promotion.

Former Wales international Robbie Savage has confirmed that he will 'always be a Reading fan.' The Macclesfield FC manager has been a regular at the Select Car Leasing Stadium for the past two years after his son, Charlie, moved to the club from Manchester United. Having made close to a century of appearances for the club, the 21-year-old has become a Wales international, as his father was in the 2000s. "For me to be there for my last-ever game, in my underpants, the club will always be special," Savage told popular podcast The Tilehurst End. "When Reading were interested, I'll never forget the way Reading fans were with me on the last day." A big character in the game, playing most prominently for the likes of Leicester City, Birmingham City and Derby, Savage was on Strictly Come Dancing in 2011 and performed at half-time in the Royals 2-2 draw with the Rams in October of that year. "I danced there on the pitch at half-time, I went in goal at Reading for Derby," Savage continued. "The club means a lot, I'm a fan of Reading now and I'll be a fan of Reading forever because of the way they treated my son and me, in my last game." Savage Jr came on leaps and bounds during his second season with the club, particularly impressing under Noel Hunt following Ruben Selles' departure in December 2024. He remains under contract until 2027, one of only five players who are not out of contract this summer.
