SIMMONS: Beyond the Panthers and Oilers, who's better than the Toronto Maple Leafs?

Article content Roger Neilson coached some impressive Toronto teams in the 1970s, led by Darryl Sittler and Lanny McDonald up front, with Tiger Williams fighting everyone, with Borje Salming and Ian Turnbull on defence and Mike Palmateer in goal. The most points they had in a season was 92 in 1978. They made it to the third round of the playoffs that year, being handled rather easily by the Cup champion Montreal Canadiens. The Leafs finished sixth out of 18 teams in the league. They weren't legitimate Stanley Cup contenders. Pat Burns coached some impressive Toronto teams in the 1990s, led by Doug Gilmour, Dave Andreychuk and Wendel Clark up front, with a defence that included Dave Ellett, Sylvain Lefebvre and Jamie Macoun, and with Felix Potvin in goal. Twice in a row the Leafs advanced to the third round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. The first time they went seven games and lost to Wayne Gretzky and the Los Angeles Kings and, all these years later — 32 in fact — that loss still stings.

'Almost perfection': major Edmonton doubter now raves about Oilers

Article content But after the Oilers flushed the Stars in five games, Reaugh has a different take, saying that Edmonton's best players dominated. On The Ticket Top 10 radio show, he said,'The Oilers' elites all rolled up their sleeves and really did embrace blue collar work and responsibility and driven defending, McDavid, Draisaitl, Ryan Nugent Hopkins, Bouchard, all these people. And they scored at critical moments. And they seem to have morphed into one of those teams who get their offense from the shadows a little bit, their depth. And they get sort of steel gate hard defending from their superstars. That's a tough team to overcome.' Reaugh continued: '(Dallas) just could not find their way through that Oilers team that played just phenomenal defence when they had leads. And they had to lead most of it…. The Stars just couldn't crack it…. It was like three games in a row chasing the score where they couldn't mount much of an attack against them.

Canadiens prospect Ivan Demidov wins KHL Rookie of the Year award

Montreal Canadiens' Ivan Demidov steps onto the ice prior to an NHL hockey game against the Chicago Blackhawks in Montreal, Monday, April 14, 2025. (Graham Hughes/The Canadian Press) Montreal Canadiens prospect Ivan Demidov won the Kontinental Hockey League's Rookie of the Year award on Thursday. 'He's incredible! Ivan Demidov won the 2025 Rookie of the Year award! In his first season in the KHL, the 19-year-old forward was SKA Saint Petersburg's leading scorer (49 PTS, 65 G), even though he was only the 11th most-used forward (13:45),' the KHL wrote on its official English-language X account. He succeeds Metallurg Magnitogorsk goalie Ilya Nabokov, who was voted Rookie of the Year in 2024. Demidov scored one goal and added one assist in two regular season games with the Habs this season. The 6-foot-1, 192-pound Russian also had two assists in five playoff games this spring against the Washington Capitals. Demidov was the Bleu-blanc-rouge's first pick, fifth overall, in the last NHL draft. This report by The Canadian Press was first published in French on May 30, 2025.
