UP's Banda records hottest temperature in country at 46.2 degrees Celsius
LUCKNOW: As many as five cities in Uttar Pradesh recorded the maximum temperatures of 45 degrees Celsius or above since Friday. Banda in the Bundelkhand region remained on top in the list of hottest places in the country, with the maximum temperatures soaring to as high as 46.2 degrees Celsius.
After Banda, Ganganagar in Rajasthan was the second hottest at 45.9 degrees Celsius. Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh was a close third at 45.8 degrees Celsius.
In UP, after Banda, Prayagraj (45.4), Kanpur (45.2), Jhansi (45.1) and Varanasi (45) kept the residents struggling with the sweeping heat wave.
However, a dip in the day temperatures was recorded in the state following sporadic showers and thunderstorms on Saturday.
Meanwhile, amid intense heatwave conditions prevailing in the state, UP CM Yogi Adityanath issued directives to the Relief and Health Departments to issue alerts and ensure public safety.
According to senior scientist Mohammad Danish at the state met centre, the main reason behind this heatwave is the strong westerly winds coming from the desert region of Rajasthan. The weather conditions are likely to remain the same till Sunday.
Thereafter, an easterly and westerly trough is expected to bring rain and thunderstorms, providing some relief from the scorching heat in the state. In line with the CM's instructions, the state Health Department released official guidelines on Saturday to make the public aware of the measures to be taken to prevent heatstroke.
The guidelines included suggestions for avoiding exposure to extreme heat, staying hydrated, and recognising early symptoms of heat-related illnesses.
Additionally, posters and pamphlets are being circulated across the state to educate people on safety precautions. Partha Sarathi Sen Sharma, Principal Secretary of the Department of Medical, Health, and Family Welfare, said that the officials were instructed to issue necessary guidelines to protect people from the extreme conditions.
The guidelines talk about covering the body properly and opting for light-coloured, breathable clothing while stepping out of the house. Everyone is advised to carry an umbrella or wear sunglasses as protection against the blazing sun.
"Keep oneself hydrated with plenty of fluids like lemon water, shikanji, or coconut water throughout the day." Moreover, the guidelines also talk about the use of curtains or shades to block direct sunlight while being indoors.

Weather update: IMD predicts heatwave to grip North India in next 4-5 days, issues yellow alert in Mumbai
The India Meteorological Department on Saturday predicted the temperature in northern India to rise in the next 4-5 days, with a possibility of a heat wave in North West India. According to the met department, the heat wave in North West India, specifically in West Rajasthan, would arrive on 9 June. While the South Punjab, South Haryana, South Uttar Pradesh, and North Madhya Pradesh, the heat wave is expected to occur on 10 June. Also, in the national capital it is estimated that the temperature will rise by 2-4 degree Celsius over the next 3-4 days, reaching 43-44 degree Celsius. However, there is no alert for NCR Delhi. Among other details, IMD predicted that the monsoon will revive across the entire South Peninsula in next 3-4 days. It added that heavy rainfall may occur in Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. Speaking to ANI, IMD Scientist Naresh Kumar said, 'The temperature, which is currently normal or lower than usual, will gradually increase over the next 4-5 days. IMD Scientist Sushma Nair said, as ANI quoted, 'It is important to understand that the warning issued for the next 24 hours is a Yellow Alert. Upgrade GEMCH in Perundurai into multi super speciality hospital: AITUC
The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) has urged the State government to upgrade the Government Erode Medical College and Hospital (GEMCH) in Perundurai into a multi super speciality hospital to enhance healthcare facilities in the region. A memorandum in this regard was prepared by AITUC's Erode district president S. Chinnasamy and was recommended and submitted by Tiruppur MP and AITUC All India vice-president K. Subbarayan to Health Minister Ma. Subramanian during his visit to the hospital on Friday. According to the memorandum, the Ramalingam Tuberculosis Sanatorium (RTS), located in Sanitorium, Perundurai, was established in 1939. In 1992, it was converted into a medical college and hospital under the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (IRT–PMCH). Later, in 2018, it was taken over by the Government of Tamil Nadu, and since 2020, it has been functioning as the GEMCH. Currently, the hospital lacks facilities for treatment of various ailments, including cardiology, nephrology, neurology, oncology, and plastic surgery. As a result, patients are compelled to travel nearly 80 km to Coimbatore or Salem for treatment, causing severe hardship. Therefore, the memorandum strongly urged the government to upgrade the hospital into a full-fledged multi super speciality facility with comprehensive infrastructure. With the long-standing demand for an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the region still unmet, the upgrade was described as all the more critical. The memorandum also called for upgrading the Government Hospital in Perundurai town to at least a 60-bed facility. Additionally, it sought the elevation of the upgraded Government Primary Health Centres in Chennimalai and Thingalur into full-fledged government hospitals. It also requested the establishment of new Government Primary Health Centres in Pandiyampalayam and Ingur villages.
