France's Mistral adds new AI features to rival U.S. chatbots
Often presented as France's and Europe's AI champion, Mistral competes with American giants such as OpenAI and Alphabet's Google, but lags behind in terms of market share or revenues.
"We're making Le Chat even more capable, more intuitive — and more fun — with a collection of powerful new features to help you research more thoroughly, express yourself more naturally, and keep your interactions — text, voice, and images — organized in context", said Mistral in a blog post.
While Europe's AI champion Mistral's chatbot has been lagging in some advanced features offered by bigger American rivals such as OpenAI and Google, the latest update brings it closer to the options available in the market.
Among the new features accessible to anyone using Le Chat, users can talk to Mistral's AI generative model instead of typing through its "Voxtral" model.
It can also be used as a research assistant gathering "credible sources" with a "Deep Research" mode. AI models have all been struggling to sort fake news from authentic information.
Valued at $6.2 billion by venture capitalists and feted by French President Emmanuel Macron, Mistral gained global exposure at an international AI gathering in Paris in February.
Mistral, which formed partnerships with several top French companies such as TotalEnergies, CMA CGM or Orange, is intent on developing its corporate clientele and implementing its models on-premises.

The hike in prices of goose and duck feathers are the key factor as they are used in feather shuttlecocks, still the preferred choice compared to any synthetic alternatives. But what's China's culinary choice of pork got to do with it? It's a classic case of interconnectedness of supply chains and its disruptive effect in food production. The declining pork prices in China have driven up consumer demand for the delicacy. This then makes fewer farmers keen to raise ducks and geese, which in turn makes their feathers – and hence the shuttlecocks – more expensive. China remains the main producer of feather shuttlecocks. 'The clubs talk to me about it every day. We're taking the full brunt of it, but we don't have control over the prices,' Franck Laurent, the new president of the French Badminton Association told the sports newspaper L'Equipe. 'It's colossal. Over ten years, it's increased almost 100%. Boxes that we used to pay 13-14 euros for are now at 24-25 or more ,' Dimitri Vaginet, president of the Volant Bisontin, told L'Equipe. ' And it's not over. Before, we had a raise once a year, now it's almost every three or five months.' L'Equipe reports that on average, a French club uses nearly 600 shafts of 12 shuttlecocks per year. Each shuttlecock requires sixteen goose feathers – preferred because they are the strongest – or duck feathers. France is seeing a boom in popularity of badminton of late. It's not just a French problem of course, back in China too the same problem has been reported. quoted the owner of six training centres in Beijing last month. 'We moved as quickly as we could to prepare the money and grab all the supplies we could get our hands on,' said Li Taxi, who runs the company Poyan Sports' umbrella. 'Each tube of midrange shuttlecocks costs 70 to 80 yuan ($9.70 to $11.10). With her players training up to 18 hours a week — many of them play six hours a day on weekends — the costs pile up quickly. We spend 100,000 to 200,000 yuan out of our own pocket every year to support the competitive classes (of players), and about 80 percent of that goes to shuttlecocks,' she told Badminton is China's most popular sport, with a mindboggling 250 million recreational players, according to the 2023 national sports participation survey released by the General Administration of Sport of China. 'The supplier explains to us that there are fewer resources and that the priority for supply is directed towards Asia,' Dimitri Vaginet said.

The report suggests Google may brand this feature as 'Pixelsnap,' drawing parallels with Apple's 'MagSafe' magnetic charging system. Google Pixel 10 series: Pixelsnap wireless charging Earlier reports indicated that the Pixel 10 lineup would enable wireless charging via magnetic alignment when used with compatible cases. However, the latest images suggest that the magnetic coils may be integrated directly into the phone's body, allowing support for a wider range of Qi2-compatible accessories. In addition to the phones themselves, Google is reportedly preparing a new accessory ecosystem under the Pixelsnap name, which may include custom cases and magnetic wireless chargers. One image reveals a circular wireless charger that resembles the current Pixel Watch charger but in a larger size. The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) recently introduced the Qi2 25W charging standard, which increases the maximum wireless charging speed from 15W to 25W. Google is expected to bypass the regular Qi2 specification and adopt the faster 25W Qi2 version for its upcoming Pixel phones. Although the magnetic charger appears only on the standard Pixel 10 model in the leaked image, it's likely that the full Pixel 10 series will offer this new functionality. What is Qi charging? Qi is a widely used wireless charging standard created by the Wireless Power Consortium. It operates through electromagnetic induction, transmitting power from a charging pad (transmitter) to a compatible device (receiver), eliminating the need for charging cables. Qi2, introduced in 2023, builds on Apple's MagSafe concept by adding a magnetic ring to improve alignment between devices and chargers, thereby increasing charging efficiency and stability.
