Benedict Cumberbatch blasts his 'horrific' Marvel diet for 'Doctor Strange': 'I could feed a family'
"It's a grossly wasteful industry," the actor behind Stephen Strange said. An apple a day is not nearly enough for Doctor Strange — but maybe it should be. Benedict Cumberbatch discussed his complicated feelings toward maintaining his Marvel diet and fitness regimen during an interview with the Ruthie's Table podcast. "For me, the exercise is great," the Sherlock star began. "And the end result is that you feel strong and you feel confident — you hold yourself better. You have stamina through the exercise and the food that makes you last through the gig." Cumberbatch expressed dismay, however, at the nutritional side of the job. "But it is horrific. I don't like it personally," he said. "I think it's horrific eating beyond your appetite. Again, going back to responsibility and resourcefulness and sustainability — it's just like, what am I doing? I could feed a family with the amount I'm eating." Cumberbatch said that his diet while playing the Sorcerer Supreme included five meals per day, plus "a couple of boiled eggs between those five meals, or some kind of high protein snack, cheese and crackers or almond butter and crackers — crackers, lots of crackers." That being said, the Imitation Game actor said that on the whole, he appreciates the overall process of maintaining intense fitness for his superhero projects. "It's great fun. I love it. I love body transformation in my job," he said. "On Marvel, it's a big sand pit. So they've got resources. You have someone who can prescribe you what you're eating, and they can cook [for] you. We had a fantastic chef on the last Doctor Strange film." Other Marvel actors have previously discussed the difficulties of maintaining a superheroic physique. Paul Rudd said that he essentially cut out all flavorful foods while playing Ant-Man. "When I was having to train for the Ant-Man movie, and I was on a very restrictive diet, my reward was sparkling water," he told the Off Menu podcast in 2023. "That's how horrible that diet was. I was like, 'All right, I can have some sparkling water now, I've earned it.'" Earlier this year, Danny Ramirez — who played Joaquin Torres, the new Falcon in Captain America: Brave New World — said that upholding his character's physique requires significant sacrifice from a dietary standpoint. "I think everyone out there that goes through an intense training regimen knows how boring it gets," he told Men's Health. "Now my dinners are kinda bland." Elsewhere in the Ruthie's Table interview, Cumberbatch also explained how his Marvel diet is indicative of a wider problem in Hollywood. "It's a grossly wasteful industry," he said. "You may think about set builds that aren't recycled, think about transport, think about food, think about housing, but also light and energy — the amount of wattage you need to sort of create daylight and consistent light in a studio environment, it's a lot of energy."The Power of the Dog actor said that when he produces projects, he pushes for more climate-friendly policies during production. "It is a systemic thing, but as a producer, I'm really hot on that," he said. "I try to push the green initiative, the green handshake into every agreement I can, whether it's just a gentlemanly discussion about, 'Can we not have any single-use plastic? Really, I think we're beyond that.' [Or] if people have water bottles now, they can bring in.... You don't have to give the crew plastic bottles." Watch the full interview with Cumberbatch above. 'Fantastic Four' Star Wants A Spider-Man Team-Up
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors In the comic book source material, one of Peter Parker/Spider-Man's closest friends is Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch. Now the guy playing the latest live-action incarnation of the Human Torch, Joseph Quinn, says he wants a team-up with Tom Holland's Spidey. Read More: 'Fantastic Four' Early Reactions Are Overwhelmingly One-Sided Speaking at the world premiere of "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" Monday night, Quinn gave his thoughts on the matter to The Hollywood Reporter. "That pairing makes sense to me and I think he's brilliant and I'm up for it," Quinn said. "I think we'd have a laugh. I've never met Tom and I think he's brilliant; his Peter Parker is the best one ever, I think he's our best-ever Spider-Man, so why not? Let's do it, get it moving." Tom Holland as Spider-Man. Marvel Quinn's words about Holland's Spider-Man are particularly gracious considering he actually auditioned for the role along with Holland. At #TheFantasticFour premiere, Joseph Quinn shows his excitement for the idea of teaming up with Tom Holland in future MCU projects. — The Hollywood Reporter (@THR) July 22, 2025 Unfortunately, if the two are going to team-up on the big screen, fans will likely have to wait at least a couple of years to see it. While Quinn will be joining the rest of the "Fantastic Four" heroes in next year's "Avengers: Doomsday," Holland will be a no-show for that event film. There is always the following year's "Avengers: Secret Wars," which will end the Multiverse Saga and somehow reboot the MCU. "Secret Wars" is scheduled to hit theaters December 17, 2027, meaning fans likely have at least two and a half years to wait for any possible Spider-Man/Human Torch team-up. That is, unless Quinn makes a surprise appearance in next year's "Spider-Man: Brand New Day." With Jon Bernthal's Punisher already set to appear (and persistent rumors of Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner/Hulk), a Human Torch team-up seems unlikely. But a future team-up would be a boon to comic book fans. In the source material the Human Torch and Spider-Man are such good friends, it was Spidey who replaced his buddy on the team when the Torch "died" in Jonathan Hickman's acclaimed "Fantastic Four" run. They also shared a team-up "Spider-Man/Human Torch" miniseries in 2005. "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" releases in theaters July 25. Tickets are on sale now. The film is directed by Matt Shakman. It stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Paul Walter Hauser, Natasha Lyonne, Julia Garner, Ralph Ineson, Mark Gatiss, and Sarah Niles More Comics: John Malkovich Cut From 'The Fantastic Four' DC Finds Its 'Wonder Woman' Reboot Writer

Lake Forest theater company premieres The Queen's Museum in outdoor venue
A theater not bound by walls or a building, a performance written to be performed out in nature, all characteristics of this weekend's world premiere of The Queen's Museum. The latest partnership between Citadel Theatre and Lake Forest Open Lands blends a theatrical and ecological gift in The Queen's Museum, written by Mark Adamczyk, with outdoor performances on July 17 through July 20th, at 350 North Waukegan Road in Lake Forest. Citadel co-founder and artistic director, Scott Phelps, says he founded Citadel in 2002 with his wife, Ellen. The theatre, now in its 23rd season, has collaborated with Lake Forest Open Lands for 18 years. 'What began in 2007 as an interest in theatre or storytelling hikes along the trail, featuring tales like The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and Johnny Appleseed – has morphed over the past several years, into Citadel's production of original musicals for the entire family, usually based on a children's short story,' Phelps said. Vice president and director of development for Lake Forest Open Lands, Paula Clair-Gould, says to come together to provide the venue for these productions has been such a positive and very much in line with their mission. 'As stewards of the land, we have been able to transcend the natural space, to expand and enlarge artistic experiences for our community in these native settings,' Clair-Gould said. This year's production brings audiences to The Queen's Museum, directed by Ben Ballmer. The Queen's Museum is based on the original short story, The Queen's Museum by Frank Stockton, first published in January 1906, and adapted by musician and playwright Mark Adamczyk. The monarch of the realm commissions the housing of her collection of artifacts for the inspiration and edification of the populace. What a noble idea! What a wonderful plan! What could possibly go wrong? Well, there's this band of down-on-their-luck pirates, see, drawn to the scent of plunder and rousing dance numbers, coming together in another Citadel outdoor summer extravaganza full of music and fun for the whole family, according to the Citadel website. Ballmer says directing for young audiences is part of a world of children's theatre that relies on encouraging engagement and interaction with audience members during a performance. 'Actors learn to improvise and to involve the audience in the story — and in The Queen's Museum, this swashbuckling adventure seems to come to life outdoors,' Ballmer said.
