3 Italian Car Brands Named the Least Reliable of 2025

Based on data from Consumer Reports, J.D. Power, WhatCar and other automotive research organizations, three Italian car brands have been flagged as among the least reliable vehicles you can buy in 2025.
Here's what potential buyers need to know about these brands before making a purchase decision.
Alfa Romeo ranks as the second worst car company in the world according to WhatCar's latest dependability study (after MG), making it a significant concern for reliability-conscious buyers.
Check Out:
'Alfa builds stunning vehicles that are enjoyable to drive, but they're simply not designed for long-term reliability,' said Alex Black of car research platform EpicVIN. This sentiment reflects the ongoing challenge with Alfa Romeo vehicles; they deliver exceptional driving experiences but often come with significant maintenance headaches.
Despite the brand's overall reliability struggles, the Alfa Romeo model that is the most reliable and ranks the highest in its vehicle category is the Alfa Romeo 4C, which ranks 8 out of 27 Most Reliable Luxury Convertibles, according to iSeeCars. Following the 4C is the Alfa Romeo Giulia and the Alfa Romeo Stelvio.
While Alfa Romeo vehicles offer undeniable style and performance, buyers should be prepared for higher maintenance costs and more frequent service visits compared to more reliable alternatives. Consumer Reports had insufficient data to create brand rankings for Alfa Romeo, which often indicates limited sales volume but also suggests potential reliability concerns among the vehicles that are sold.
Fiat continues to struggle with reliability issues that have plagued the brand for years. Fiat finds itself seventh on WhatCar's list of least dependable car brands, highlighting ongoing quality control problems.
The reliability issues are particularly pronounced with specific models. The Fiat 500X is a particularly weak entry, landing on U.S. News and World Report's dreaded list of Most Unreliable Cars. This compact SUV has become emblematic of Fiat's reliability struggles in the American market.
The Italian small car specialist has failed to manufacture cars as well as their rival Mini, demonstrating that other European brands have managed to achieve better reliability standards in the same market segment.
If you want a European sub-compact car, do yourself a favor and buy a Mini instead, according to automotive experts. This recommendation reflects the significant reliability gap between Fiat and its more dependable competitors.
Maserati represents the luxury end of Italian automotive manufacturing, but even their premium positioning hasn't shielded them from reliability issues.
Consumer Reports had insufficient data to create brand rankings for Maserati, along with several other luxury brands. This lack of comprehensive data often indicates either very low sales volumes or significant reliability concerns that affect data collection.
Among Maserati's lineup, the Maserati model that is the most reliable and ranks the highest in its vehicle category is the Maserati Quattroporte, which ranks 18 out of 24 in iSeeCar's Most Reliable Luxury Large Cars. Following the Quattroporte is the Maserati Levante and the Maserati Ghibli.
Even within Maserati's limited reliability rankings, the Quattroporte's 18th place out of 24 in its category demonstrates the challenges facing Italian luxury car reliability. This ranking suggests that even Maserati's most reliable model performs below average compared to competitors in the luxury large car segment.
Italian car manufacturers have historically prioritized performance, style and driving emotion over long-term reliability. This engineering philosophy, while creating exciting vehicles, often results in more complex systems that require more maintenance.
Industry experts see reliability issues firsthand in post-warranty service and auction return rates, providing real-world evidence of the reliability challenges facing Italian brands.
Many European manufacturers, including Italian brands, struggle with integrating new technologies while maintaining reliability standards, leading to systems that may be innovative but prone to problems.
When evaluating Italian car brands, buyers should factor in potentially higher maintenance costs, more frequent service visits and possible warranty repairs when calculating the total cost of ownership.
Buyers should be particularly cautious about post-warranty service costs, as Italian vehicles often experience more problems after their warranty periods expire.
For buyers seeking European styling and performance with better reliability, consider alternatives like BMW, Audi or even Mini, which have demonstrated better long-term dependability in recent studies. While Italian car brands continue to produce some of the most beautiful and emotionally engaging vehicles on the market, Alfa Romeo, Fiat and Maserati all face significant reliability challenges in 2025. These brands may create stunning vehicles that are enjoyable to drive, but they're simply not designed for long-term reliability.
Potential buyers should carefully weigh their priorities: if you value style, performance and driving excitement above all else, these Italian brands may still appeal to you. However, if reliability, low maintenance costs and peace of mind are your primary concerns, you'll likely find better options among Japanese or other European manufacturers. Before purchasing any vehicle from these brands, ensure you have a comprehensive warranty, budget for higher maintenance costs and have access to qualified service technicians familiar with Italian vehicles. While these cars can provide years of driving pleasure, they require more attention and care than their more reliable competitors.

F1 British GP live updates: Silverstone qualifying next, Bearman handed huge penalty for pit lane crash
Follow live coverage as Silverstone hosts Round 12 of the 2025 Formula One world championship Getty Images Silverstone hosts Round 12 of the 2025 Formula One world championship this weekend, with the iconic British Grand Prix. Lando Norris closed the gap on his McLaren teammate in the drivers' championship standings with a supreme win in Austria last weekend. The Brit also topped the free practice timings yesterday, leading FP2 with a 1:25.816. But there is a challenge coming from Ferrari this weekend, triggered by Lewis Hamilton's FP1-leading lap of 1:26.892 and then with Charles Leclerc fastest in FP3 earlier today (1:25.498) ahead of qualifying later. You can follow all the live action and reaction below. Join the conversation: live@ GO FURTHER Silverstone track breakdown: The British GP makes F1 drivers feel like jet pilots ⏰ 8:33 Session stopped. We've got some debris on the track. ⏰ 10:12 Sorry, did I forget about the Ferrari challenge for a moment? Charles Leclerc isn't having that. He's back at the top of the timings with a 1:25.498. Which now highlights the fact Lewis Hamilton is more than eight-tenths off that time, back in P11 right now. ⏰ 14:07 It's getting fun now. Charles Leclerc's leading time of 1:25.922 is beaten by Lando Norris. Then Oscar Piastri does likewise, with a 1:25.566 that is the quickest lap of the weekend so far. Max Verstappen wrestles everything out of his Red Bull for a trip — and splits the two McLarens. The top three cars are all within four-hundredths of a second. Boy, does this bode well for qualifying. ⏰ 17:56 It's getting testy out there. Now Liam Lawson and Peirre Gasly have a bit of an exchange on track. Lawson is onto the radio to shoot off, but it's Lawson's actions that have been noted by Race Control for driving erratically. ⏰ 19:58 Alex Albon channels his inner Max Verstappen and gets frustrated with a meandering Lance Stroll on the racing line. In fairness, the Canadian deserved it. ⏰ 21:52 Credit here for Oliver Bearman, another Brit at his home race, who is currently P6 and within seven-tenths of the quickest time this season. Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc says there is a little bit of rain around Copse. A little reminder there that summer in the UK means nothing in terms of weather reliability. ⏰ 24:31 Max Verstappen is back on the radio complaining about his brakes. He has also waved at Pierre Gasly for what he felt was the Alpine getting in his way on a flying lap. Still, the Dutchman is closest to Charles Leclerc's session-leading time. Getty Images ⏰ 31:47 More cars means more can be read into the times, and right now that Ferrari potential is shining through again. Charles Leclerc is fastest, just clocking a 1:25.922 — although still a tenth shy of Lando Norris' quickest time yesterday. Max Verstappen, George Russell and Kimi Antonelli complete the current top four. McLaren at the moment look a little off it. ⏰ 36:12 A moment for Lance Stroll at Woodcote, as the rear of his Aston Martin starts stepping out — and so begins a battle to keep the car pointing forward. He manages it, but the lap is done and the tires are wrecked from a peak performance perspective. And just like that, we also have timed laps for all 20 cars and 17 of them out on track right now. ⏰ 42:01 We're still a little light on cars in FP3. We're up to six drivers with a timed lap now. But there are a lot of drivers heading out, including Lando Norris' McLaren. And there's a lovely moment as Norris gives a big wave to the Landostand at Stowe, as he cruises around on his out lap. Huge support here for the Brit this weekend, in particular. Actually, I wonder how Lewis Hamilton feels about there being a Landostand… Getty Images ⏰ 49:12 Slow going, this FP3 so far. Only three cars have completed a timed lap, and two of them are Alpines. The other is Lewis Hamilton. All of those runs have been on the soft tire — which will come into its own in qualifying later, of course. ⏰ 54:18 Zak Brown currently speaking to Sky Sports from the pit wall, confirmed he did indeed clock how many marbles there were out on the circuit when he did his lap in that iconic Williams car. Hence the delay in the start to FP3. All calm after yesterday's practice at McLaren — but Brown definitely has eyes on Ferrari today and tomorrow, saying its one-lap and longer stint pace is impressive. He clearly sees the red cars as contenders to win at Silverstone this weekend. ⏰ 59:59 Delay done, green lights at the end of the pit lane and Alpine cars swiftly on the track. FP3 is underway! There were a few classic cars taken around the Silverstone track ahead of FP3 — including McLaren CEO Zak Brown driving Nigel Mansell's 1987 Williams F1 charger. And it sounds like that may be responsible for the extra rubber out there, as well as our slight delay. As for the weather, it looks much cooler but just as windy at Silverstone — if not more so. The direction could well flip between today and tomorrow too. So many challenges for these teams. Now then… Race Control has stated the start of FP3 will be delayed. But no word on how long or why — although there are still marshals out on the track clearing loads of 'marbles' from the track. 'Marbles' being small pieces of rubber that come off the tires as they degrade around the track. And now it is confirmed — the delay will only be five minutes. One more hour of rehearsals left — and it starts in five minutes. LET'S GO… Formula 1 It's not quite double the points tally of its nearest rival, but McLaren isn't far off it now. To be honest, there won't be anyone else winning the constructors' championship this season in my view — which I first declared yesterday. And yes, I know we're not even halfway through the schedule. The real fun is behind them, with Ferrari just a point ahead of Mercedes and Red Bull still no nearer finding a point-scoring second driver behind Max Verstappen. There is also only one point between Haas in P7 and Aston Martin behind, while Sauber just two points further back (26). Alpine remains the real struggler, stuck on 11 points at the back of the field and desperate for better. Quickly. Formula 1 It's looking tight at the top — but you can see why it's all about McLaren and no one else. Oscar Piastri's lead is now down to 15 points from Lando Norris, with the pair way clear of Max Verstappen in third. Below Lewis Hamilton, you will find Kimi Antonelli (63 points) while Nico Hulkenberg's 22 points and P10 in his Sauber is arguably the performance of the season so far. Alpine's Franco Colapinto (like the driver he replaced after six races, Jack Doohan) is the only driver on the grid this weekend yet to pick up a championship point. Getty Images We have less than 30 minutes to wait for the final hour of free practice at Silverstone this weekend. You'll hear plenty from our correspondents and editors, both trackside and following all the action from further afield — and we very much want to hear from you too. FC Barcelona To Receive This Offer From European Giant For Ter Stegen

More Champions League last season - for Marc-Andre ter Stegen according to SPORT, which cited anonymous sources. FC Barcelona is set to receive an offer from a European giant - and that which knocked it out of the Champions League last season - for Marc-Andre ter Stegen according to SPORT, which cited anonymous sources. Though he started 2024/2025 as his team's captain and number one shotstopper, a pretty much campaign-ending injury knocked the German down the pecking order in Catalonia. Wojciech Szczesny was brought out of retirement to cover for the skipper and did a pretty outstanding job as Barca won all three titles on offer in Spain. After Barca shipped seven goals to Inter Milan, however, which saw them lose 7-6 on aggregate in the UCL finals, the quest for a new goalkeeper began. Barca didn't cast its net far and simply looked across the city to Espanyol. Activating breakout star Joan Garcia's $29.5 million (€25 million) and swiftly announcing the 24-year-old. Ter Stegen has since been the subject of endless reports with regards to being forced out of the club. While Sporting Director Deco said that he doesn't owe the veteran an explanation, he will reportedly have talks to clear up his future with head coach Hansi Flick before preseason training starts on July 13. Before that, though, Ter Stegen could have already been shipped off to another club. There has already been interest in him from Saudi Arabia and Galatasaray, but it is Inter Milan that is now thinking of lodging an offer in the coming days. Galatasaray has reportedly switched its focus to the Italians' goalkeeper Yan Sommer, who has just one year left on his contract at the San Siro, and that has forced the UCL runners-up recently knocked out of the Club World Cup by Fluminense to look for a replacement. Ter Stegen went from 'untouchable' to surplus to requirements at FC Barcelona Whether he moves on in the near future or sees out his contract which runs until 2028, Ter Stegen has gone from an 'untouchable' captain at FC Barcelona to a figure that is surplus to requirements while having become angered as what he perceives to be a media campaign against him aimed at forcing his exit.
