Steelers' Mike Tomlin Explains Why Aaron Rodgers is 'Contagious'

The Pittsburgh Steelers decided to swing big this offseason, acquiring quarterback Aaron Rodgers, wide receiver D.K. Metcalf and cornerback Jalen Ramsey to help them make a strong Super Bowl push.
Obviously, Rodgers is the biggest name of the bunch, and after a forgettable year with the New York Jets in 2024, the future Hall-of-Famer seems ready to re-establish himself as an elite signal-caller this fall.

Of course, Rodgers is 41 years old, so there are a whole lot of people doubting whether or not he can still play at a high level. That being said, he did throw for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions last season, so perhaps the talk of his demise has been largely exaggerated.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin seems very excited to get things going with Rodgers under center, and he is already appreciating the significant effect that the four-time MVP has had on his teammates.
"He loves football," Tomlin said, via Mike Jones of The Athletic. "That's the thing that's on the tip of my tongue. He displays it daily. He has a love affair with this game — one that he's willing to share with others. He's passionate about it, and I think it's contagious."

Photo byPittsburgh is desperate for playoff success. The franchise has not won a playoff game since January 2017, and that's in spite of making five postseason appearances since then. Poor quarterback play has been a major problem in Steel City for the last several years, so maybe Rodgers can change things?
There is reason to have trepidation when it comes to Rodgers. He really hasn't been great since 2021, when he totaled 37 touchdowns and four picks en route to winning his second straight MVP award with the Green Bay Packers.
He looked very mortal in 2022, missed all but one series of his debut campaign with the Jets in 2023 due to a torn Achilles and went just 5-12 last year.
That being said, there is plenty of reason to still have faith in Rodgers, who looked very impressive for stretches in 2024 and could strongly benefit from playing for a team that has not posted a losing record since 2003.

Let's face it: no one has been able to succeed with the Jets for the last decade-and-a-half, so maybe, just maybe, Rodgers wasn't the problem there.
The Steelers could definitely afford to add some proven depth at wide receiver, but perhaps Rodgers can get the most out of youngsters like Roman Wilson and Calvin Austin III. And of course, he has Metcalf, too.

Steelers LS Christian Kuntz says he wants to be ready by Week 1
Pittsburgh Steelers long snapper Christian Kuntz suffered a chest injury in the Steelers' Week Two preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The initial report was that Kuntz suffered a broken sternum and he could potentially miss two months recovering from the injury. However, when head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the injury, he characterized it as short-term as opposed to long-term, which we assume means Kuntz will be back sooner than two months. If you ask Kuntz, it's going to be much sooner than that. Kuntz addressed the injury on Monday and he said that despite the pain, he is confident he will be able to play when the Steelers take on the New York Jets in Week One of the regular season. When Kuntz went down with his injury, defensive lineman Logan Lee did a great job filling in. However, the Steelers did hedge their bets this week when the team signed veteran long snapper Jake McQuaide. McQuaide is a 14-year veteran who has spent the bulk of his career with the Los Angeles Rams. He has 197 career games and played 14 games for three different teams in 2024.

Former Eagles QB and MVP candidate faces an uncertain future entering the 2025 NFL season
Ex-Eagles quarterback, once an MVP candidate, is still searching for a new team with the NFL season nearing. It's impossible to tell the story of the 2017-18 Super Bowl-winning Philadelphia Eagles without discussing a near-MVP season by their young gunslinger. Carson Wentz seemed destined for stardom, both on the field and off. Former President Barack Obama had even coined the phrase 'Wentz Wagon' during a winning streak to begin his NFL career. It was the sophomore campaign that made the former second overall pick a legend. He rattled off 11 wins in the first 13 games of the season, but he suffered a knee injury to end his run in Week 14. Before leaving the field, however, he threw a TD pass, his fourth of the contest. That pass set an Eagles single-season record for TD tosses (33) and gave his team the lead on the scoreboard. It also serves as one of the most memorable moments of Wentz's Eagles tenure. It seemed he was on pace to win the MVP trophy, but things shifted very quickly. Philadelphia won the Super Bowl, with Nick Foles leading the charge as their starting quarterback. Carson Wentz remains unsigned with the NFL's regular season nearing Everyone knows how things ended in Philadelphia. Everyone is aware of how his career has progressed. He has been part of four different rosters over the past four seasons. Most recently, he served as Patrick Mahomes' backup, but they didn't retain him at the end of the season. Here we are, less than three weeks from the season opener, and Wentz is currently unsigned. He hasn't announced his retirement yet. He could still join a QB-needy team at some point. For now, however, his continuing NFL journey has put the brakes on. It's interesting to see how quickly things turn in pro football, but regardless of how anyone feels about the former Eagles QB, perhaps we can agree on one thing. It's hard to believe every NFL team has three quarterbacks who are better than Carson Wentz. Maybe that is true. Perhaps some of the negative perceptions about his personality have caught up with him. Whatever the case, he remains one of the most intriguing stories of the past decade of professional football.

Report: Steelers LS Christian Kuntz could return earlier than expected
Steelers long snapper Christian Kuntz suffered what appeared to be a significant chest injury in Pittsburgh's Saturday preseason loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Kuntz missed the rest of the game. The Steelers signed a second long snapper on Monday. And Steelers beat writer Mark Kaboly reported that Kuntz had broken his sternum – something that could keep him out 'several weeks to months.' A new report from Steelers Now's Alan Saunders, as well as recent comments from Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, makes it sound like the recovery timeline should be closer to weeks than months. 'After practice Kuntz told Steelers Now that the injury is painful, but said he's confident he'll be able to return for Week 1,' Saunders wrote on Monday, adding that Kuntz was on the practice field shagging footballs for his teammates despite the injury. Asked about Kuntz's status in his Monday press conference, Mike Tomlin added that Kuntz's injury was 'more short term.' The fact that the long snapper hasn't been placed on injured reserve despite a second at his position being added to the team is already a good sign. With the Steelers on a short week, there's a strong possibility the Steelers brought in Jake McQuaide just for their final preseason game, and Kuntz will still make the final 53-man roster.
