Now, bus shelters inadequate at Mannarpuram, TVS Tollgate

Time of India20 hours ago
Trichy: With more moffusil passengers relying on bus stops at TVS tollgate and Mannarpuram to leave or enter Trichy city instead of travelling to KKBT at Panjapur to catch their buses, the existing shelters have turned inadequate.
New stoppages having cropped up at crucial road junctions, passengers have sought additional bus shelters and streamlining of halting points for mofussil buses leaving the city.
More than 1,500 mofussil buses are operated from the newly commissioned Panjapur KKBT. However, daily commuters travelling to Coimbatore, Thanjavur, Pudukottai and Dindigul are using Mannarpuram and TVS tollgate stops to board these buses.
Besides existing bus shelters, passengers have started using service roads of Trichy-Chennai NH to board and disembark from buses. At Mannarpuram, the service road connecting the NH with Trichy junction RoB's Chennai arm is being used to board mofussil buses to Manapparai.
Buses are now stopping at a distance before the existing bus stops.
"In recent rains, passengers were drenched as there was no shelter. As monsoon is fast approaching, new shelters are needed at Mannarpuram," Sakthivel Rengasamy, a commuter to Manapparai, said.

While city buses are halting at designated stops, mofussil buses pick up passengers on the service road. The practice chokes vehicles entering the city as free-left is blocked by the buses at Mannarpuram.
As a solution, city police suggested developing new shelters near the starting point of the service road at Mannarpuram, to avoid buses blocking the free-left for other vehicles entering the city. At TVS tollgate, where passengers board buses to Pudukottai and Thanjavur, existing bus shelters have become inadequate too.
District collector V Saravanan promised to look into the demands for new bus shelter.
New traffic signal on cards at TVS Tollgate
Trichy: City traffic police are planning to survey the entries and exits of TVS tollgate junction on Trichy-Chennai national highway where Trichy-Pudukottai national highway and multiple city roads converge. "We have requested a traffic signal system developer to survey TVS tollgate as we are unable to manually manage the vehicular movement. Buses criss-cross the junction frequently, especially after the commissioning of KKBT," a police source said.

Delhi CM unveils tourism plan

Chief minister Rekha Gupta on Friday unveiled an ambitious tourism plan to transform Delhi into a global hub for culture, heritage and spirituality, blending its historic grandeur with modern infrastructure to draw visitors from across the world. (Sanchit Khanna/HT Photo) Speaking to reporters after Independence Day celebrations at Chhatrasal Stadium, Gupta detailed a heritage circuit linking forts, monuments, museums and cultural centres into a seamless route showcasing Delhi's rich past and vibrant present. A state-of-the-art Yamuna cruise service is planned, offering scenic river views alongside a regular Yamuna Aarti, modelled on revered riverbank rituals. In a major cultural push, the government will also develop a 12-kilometre Chhath Ghat along the Yamuna, creating one of India's largest riverfront spaces for spiritual gatherings. Expected to host lakhs during Chhath Puja and other festivals, it aims to be a major religious and cultural landmark. Gupta said the projects will stimulate the economy while deepening visitors' connection with the city. 'With small but strong steps, we will create an independent, developed Delhi,' she said.

Delhiwale: This way to the vanished Khas Bazar

This place is khas, special. In olden times, it was known as Khas Bazar. That Khas Bazar was completely destroyed by the British following the 1857 uprising. Even so, the zameen where Khas Bazar stood continues to exist. And in it its own way, this slice of land remains a khas portion of Old Delhi. The open space where Khas Bazar once stood. (HT Photo) The open space showcases the Red Fort on one side, and the Jama Masjid on the facing side. It also happens to be the only location in the Walled City that presents the front prospect of the grand mosque. This facet of the 17th century monument is the only one that has been spared the contemporary clutter of Purani Dilli's chaotic zigzagging architecture. You could as well be gazing at an old painting of the monument. See photo. A broken Delhi Tourism board says that Khas Bazar was a road during the Mughal-era. The royalty would use it to travel from their residence in the Red Fort to Jama Masjid for their Friday prayers. The emperor would commute in a procession of elephants and horses. The road would be full of veggie sellers, and it also had a square, said to be Chowk Saadullah Khan. This chowk was super-rich in street life, comprising jugglers, fire eaters, magicians, dancers, astrologers, dancing wolves, performing monkeys, bird fighters, acrobats and bazar hawkers. They would show up in the evening. That world vanished after the British destroyed the place. The road, too, vanished. The lost spirit of Khas Bazar was, however, reclaimed after the place reinvented itself at some point in the last century. Today, the area is kinetic with the energy of scores of hawkers hawking eclectic range of stuff to hundreds of visitors daily. A random stroll one evening showed the following merchandise on sale: rose sherbet, post-expiry discounted shampoos, waterproof wrist watches, coconut slices, adrak chai, plastic baskets, undergarments, dates, mobile phone screens, leggings, haleem, hand towels, biryani, lemon crushers, almonds, perfumes, dining mats, chhole bhathure, and teddy bears. Another evening, the place was packed with massive crowds. It was like being in Meerut's Nauchandi Mela. Far away in the distance, the red sandstone Jama Masjid was cloaked in smog, appearing grainy as if it were an apparition of golden dust. Yesterday afternoon, on Independence Day, the crowd was somewhat less, perhaps due to the rain. The place was nevertheless decked with balloons patterned after the colours of the national flag. The sight looked khas.
