Revealed: The maximum figure Bayern Munich 'are willing to pay for Luis Diaz' as German giants join fierce race for Liverpool star

Daily Mail09-07-2025
Bayern Munich have reportedly set a sky-high limit on their transfer purse for Liverpool star Luis Diaz.
The German giants are rivalling Barcelona and Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr for the forward's signature this summer.
There is a problem standing in their way: Liverpool hold little intention of selling Diaz, whose contract expires in 2027.
But that has not deterred his suitors from rummaging around in their wallets, with Barcelona thought to be the frontrunners.
Barca have made formal contact, Mundo Deportivo reports that his agent is in talks with the Spaniards, and SPORT reported last month that Hansi Flick's side were confident of landing him.
However, Bayern are also keen and will reportedly allow Vincent Kompany to spend up to €60million (£51.6m) on him, according to insider Christian Falk.
That happens to be £0.6m above a figure recently quoted by SPORT as Liverpool's asking price.
However, Mail Sport reported earlier in July that Liverpool rejected an approach from Bayern, telling director of sport Max Eberl that the 28-year-old would not be leaving Anfield.
Falk notes that Bayern will not submite da formal offer for the time being out of respect to Liverpool following the death of Diogo Jota.
Diaz has insisted he is 'very, very happy' with the Reds, but that has not stopped him being linked with an array of sides.
Liverpool have not offered an extension to his contract and with it running out in a couple of years, the onus is on them to make a call on his future.
The versatile Diaz made 50 appearances across all competitions last season, scoring 17 goals and providing eight assists.
He recently said: 'I'm very, very happy in Liverpool. From day one, they've made me feel really welcome.
'Right now we're in contact with them because we're speaking with [other] clubs. It's normal, the market is open, and we're trying to sort out what's best for us.

'I am just waiting to see what happens. If Liverpool doesn't make a good offer, I still have two years left with them, I would be happy and content to stay there. And that's it, everything depends on them obviously, it's up to me to decide what's best for us.'
Diaz joined Liverpool from Porto in January 2022 for an initial fee of £37.5m.
He has gone on to be an important player, playing 148 times, and became the second Colombian player ever to win the Premier League after Juan Cuadrado did with Chelsea.

Liverpool fans mock Trent Alexander-Arnold's 'stinker' Real Madrid LaLiga debut as woeful numbers give new boy brutal reality check

Trent Alexander-Arnold endured a tough LaLiga debut for Real Madrid - and some Liverpool fans revelled in his struggles. The Englishman wrapped up one of the transfer sagas of the year when he joined Real Madrid in June to end a 20-year stint with his boyhood club. There were mixed emotions and opinions on his exit: many were grateful for his years of service and respected his right to move on, while others were bitter at how it was handled. And it appears that some resentment persists among sections of the fanbase as they celebrated his tough LaLiga debut against Osasuna on Monday night. Alexander-Arnold was taken off on 68 minutes after failing to win a tackle or a duel, losing the ball 15 times, and getting nutmegged during Madrid's 1-0 win over Osasuna. However, 49 of his 52 passes were accurate. Football is not played on a spreadsheet - sometimes the eye test can reveal different results to the data - but some Reds supporters were all too happy to hear of his struggles. 'Isn't it class not having to pretend Trent is the best right back in the world?' said one fan on X. 'He will be back at Aston Villa in about 18 months.' 'You have no idea how refreshing and freeing it is not having to watch him anymore,' another said. 'Trent impressing for Osasuna tonight,' one quipped. 'Every Trent stinker I will be there front row,' another vowed. However, lots of fans retain fondness for the 26-year-old, or were at least measured in their response to his debut. 'Some of those were great crosses, just no one in the right spot to get on the end of them,' one wrote. 'It takes time to settle into a new team he was a class player for us he will be a top player for Madrid. Liverpool new boys haven't settled in yet either,' another said. 'Respect your best academy player ever,' one commented. 'As a Liverpool fan l would laugh at anyone underestimating this guy,' another said. 'You guys are like bitter exes that wouldn't move on,' came one's verdict. Many pointed out that although only one of Alexander-Arnold's seven crosses found the target, the problem was as much that Kylian Mbappe isn't the most physical of strikers to meet them. He is also adapting to a new system under Xabi Alonso and learning his team-mates' patterns of play and runs, which may explain why none of his trademark long balls found the mark. Ian Hawkey, writing for The Times from Madrid, felt that Alexander-Arnold had a 'satisfactory, largely tidy home debut'. It is not a certain that he will start every game, given he is in competition with Dani Carvajal, 33, who has won 26 trophies with the club. Before the LaLiga season opener, Xabi Alonso said of the rivalry: 'I'm clear that it's a great competition. And I love that we have two players in each position who can play. Carvajal is getting closer to his level.

Virgil van Dijk sends message to Alexander Isak after explosive Liverpool transfer statement

Virgil van Dijk has hailed Alexander Isak as one of the toughest forwards to face in the Premier League as the Newcastle forward continues to push for a move to Liverpool Virgil van Dijk insists Alexander Isak is one of the toughest opponents to come up against as Liverpool continue to eye the Newcastle frontman - who has given an explosive statement on his situation. ‌ The Swede is looking to force his exit from St. James' Park and has made it clear he won't play for the club again. That would be a major blow for the Magpies with Isak crucial to their recent success. ‌ He scored against Van Dijk and Liverpool as Newcastle claimed Carabao Cup success last year - their first domestic trophy in 70 years. Isak also notched in a Premier League draw with the Reds, meaning he has found the net four times against the Merseysiders in six outings. ‌ And that quality has not gone unnoticed by Van Dijk, who was quizzed on the most difficult strikers he's had to combat in the Premier League. Whether he was giving Isak a deliberate compliment or not is unclear, but he put the Swede in the top bracket. He told Cecil Thomas on a TikTok live stream: "[Erling] Haaland, Isak, [Ollie] Watkins, Harry Kane. Speaking about the last couple of years in the Premier League, there are plenty. Everybody has a different challenge so I respect everyone playing in the Premier League because it's the hardest league in the world." Isak was not present at the PFA Awards in Manchester, but was named in the Premier League Team of the Year, as voted for by his fellow peers after a stellar season for Newcastle. Only Mohamed Salah outscored him, but the Swede took Tuesday night as the opportunity to break his silence. The striker said: "I've kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken. That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn't reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors." Newcastle have already rejected a bid from Liverpool in the region of £110million and are demanding a far higher fee. That said they've maintained their star man won't be sold. Isak is thought to be angered after a promise to look at his contract was u-turned on and now he's demanding that he's allowed to leave. He claimed: "When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue. That's where things are for me right now – and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself.' Man Utd warned Benjamin Sesko is 'similar' to Liverpool flop

Manchester United have been warned that £74m signing Benjamin Sesko is 'pretty similar' to Liverpool's 'biggest ever transfer mistake'. Sesko completed a £74m move to Old Trafford earlier in the month after rejecting interest from fellow Premier League club Newcastle United. The Slovenia international attracted interest from a number of elite clubs after two impressive seasons at RB Leipzig, where he scored 39 goals in 87 appearances. Sesko made his Premier League debut against Arsenal on Sunday, coming on as a second-half substitute in Manchester United's 1-0 defeat. The 22-year-old was signed to help solve United's goalscoring problems and replace Rasmus Hojlund, who has endured a dismal spell in Manchester since his £72m move from Atalanta. But ex-Germany midfielder Dietmar Hamann has warned the Red Devils that Sesko is 'pretty similar' to Liverpool flop Darwin Nunez. Nunez completed a big-money move to Anfield in 2022 but was sold earlier this summer following a largely disappointing spell on Merseyside. 'I'm not sure if Manchester United fans want to hear it, but I think Benjamin Sesko is a pretty similar player to Darwin Nunez,' Hamann told CasinoHawks. 'I think Sesko has got the body, he's got the height, he's got the pace. I think he's got a better touch than Nunez. 'He's technically a very gifted player, but he's a powerful young lad. Nunez is probably the one I would compare him with in recent years. 'I'd say his finishing is probably a bit better than Nunez, but he's got to prove it. He did it at times at Leipzig, but he's really in the spotlight now at Manchester United. 'Obviously, we've also seen that some big names went to Manchester United in the last 10 years as centre-forwards and they didn't succeed. It won't be an easy task, but I think he's capable of doing it.' The comparison with Nunez comes after Hamann said the ex-Liverpool forward could be the 'biggest transfer mistake' the club have ever made. Nunez signed a six-year contract at Anfield after completing a then club-record transfer worth £85m, but the 26-year-old was sold earlier this month to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal. More Trending 'Is Darwin Nunez the biggest transfer mistake in Liverpool's history? Maybe, it's just part of the game,' Hamann told Betting Lounge. 'When you bring players in, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. 'People probably thought, myself included, if you bring somebody in for £85m, it guarantees you goals, but looking back it wasn't money well spent.' Sesko could make his first Premier League start for Manchester United on Sunday when the Red Devils travel to Craven Cottage to face Fulham. For more stories like this, check our sport page.
