Taylor Swift's Blockbuster Turns One: A Look Back At The History It Made
One year ago this week, Taylor Swift's The Tortured Poets Department made history when it debuted on ... More the Billboard 200, breaking all kinds of records. Taylor Swift's The Tortured Poets Department debuted on the Billboard charts one year ago this week — and what a debut it was. The full-length arrived with record-breaking numbers across virtually every metric the company tracks, from pure sales to streaming totals to total vinyl dominance. Now, 52 weeks later, the set is still found on two tallies: the Billboard 200, where it sits at No. 16, and the Top Streaming Albums chart, where it lifts slightly and settles at No. 13, after previously conquering both rosters.
In honor of its one-year anniversary on the Billboard rankings, here's a look back at The Tortured Poets Department's blockbuster first week — one that helped redefine what a commercial music launch could look like in the modern era.
In its first frame, The Tortured Poets Department opened with 2.61 million equivalent album units in America alone. That stands out as the second-largest debut in the history of the Billboard 200. The only album to ever start with a more impressive sum was Adele's 25, which bowed with 3.48 million back in 2015.
That massive figure includes all forms of consumption — sales, streams, and track equivalents (fans buying some songs from the project, but not all of them, which are compiled together to create album 'units'). In an era when album launches rarely top 500,000 units, Swift's opening sum was nearly unheard of.
Out of that 2.61 million total, a staggering 1.914 million were pure purchases, either digital or physical. That's the third-largest sales week since Luminate began tracking purchases carefully and more directly in 1991. The Tortured Poets Department trails behind only 25 (2.433 million) and NSYNC's No Strings Attached (2.4 million). For context, the majority of chart-topping albums today don't even reach six figures in sales.
Of those traditional sales, 859,000 were vinyl copies. That number allowed Swift to break her own record for the biggest vinyl sales week in the modern era. That record previously belonged to 1989 (Taylor's Version), which had moved 693,000 copies on wax just a few months prior. Swift holds most of the biggest vinyl sales weeks ever in America.
Beyond physical and digital sales, The Tortured Poets Department was also hugely successful on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music. The project pulled in 891.34 million on-demand audio streams in its debut seven-day tracking week, breaking the all-time record for the largest U.S. streaming period for an album. The previous record-holder, Drake's Scorpion, had opened with 745.92 million back in 2018. Shockingly, Swift beat that sum by more than 140 million streams. The title's lengthy tracklist – the first edition featured 16 songs, while the Anthology version includes a total of 31 – surely played a role in its ability to shatter this record.
The collection's debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 – which was not surprising to anybody – gave Swift her fourteenth chart-topper. As it arrived and she hit that number, she matched with Jay-Z for the most among solo artists. Only The Beatles, with 19, claimed more.
Since then, Drake has also secured a fourteenth leader, as his collaborative project Some Sexy Songs 4 U with PartyNextDoor opened in first place in 2025.

Taylor Swift seeks restraining order against Adams County man: ‘Fear for my safety'
DENVER (KDVR) — A Colorado man is subject to a temporary restraining order from music industry giant Taylor Swift after she filed for the protective measure on Friday. Swift alleged in court documents filed in Los Angeles County Court that Brian Jason Wagner, 45, of Henderson, has repeatedly come to her Los Angeles home over the past year or so. Free on Your TV • New FOX31+ App for Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV Swift said that the first visit from Wagner was on July 9, 2024, and security personnel told the singer that Wagner had returned at least three times during the same month, and on one occasion, Wagner was allegedly carrying a glass bottle 'that could have been used as a weapon.' 'During each of these visits, I am informed that Mr. Wagner made various statements about living at my property (not true), being in a relationship with me (not true), believing I am the mother of his son (not true), and needing to see me in person, all of which are untrue and disconnected from reality,' Swift told the court. Swift, 35, said that her security told her that Wagner had visited her L.A. home again on May 21 and May 22 this year, asking to see the singer and saying he was there to check on a friend. 'My security team ran a criminal history report on Mr. Wagner which resulted in me learning that he was previously incarcerated. My security team and others on my staff alerted me that Mr. Wagner has a history of sending lengthy communications to me while he was incarcerated,' Swift told the court. Those communications reportedly included details of Wagner's infatuation with Swift, a fictional romantic relationship and other 'fabricated stories,' according to Swift. 'Mr. Wagner has also sent my staff hundreds of emails with similarly concerning and threatening language, tried to divert mail from my residence to his attention, and even lied to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to somehow change the address on his driver's license to my Los Angeles home,' Swift told the court. She noted that her LA address is not public information, and said that his repeated visits and refusal to leave while claiming to need access 'makes me fear for my safety and the safety of my family.' 'The fact that both of these recent visits and Mr. Wagner's inappropriate and threatening communications to my staff about me have escalated in recent weeks creates a fear of imminent harm,' Swift added. Colorado court records show that Wagner pleaded guilty in a Clear Creek County case to one count of forgery and one count of theft and was sentenced to a two-year deferred sentence on Aug. 16, 2023, and 129 days in jail, which he had already served at the time of the sentencing. Taylor Swift has regained control of her music, buys back first 6 albums A member of Taylor Swift's security team also provided a declaration to the court, noting that he's worked for her for 14 years. He said that Wagner began trying to contact Swift in 2023 while incarcerated. The security team member said that in 2024, his team learned that Wagner had allegedly attempted to stop mail service to Swift's home after being alerted by the Postal Service. He said that Wagner then attempted to get a California driver's license that listed Swift's address as his, and the team learned of the matter when the ID was shipped to the property. The security professional said that when Wagner tried to visit Swift's home in May of this year, he also sent over 26 emails to her staff during the same time. He's now subject to the temporary restraining order, preventing him from legally trying to contact or harass Swift and requiring that he stay at least 100 yards away from her until June 30, when a hearing on the matter will be held.
