Mike Repole joins UFL: Why entrepreneur is investing in spring football league

USA Today6 days ago
The UFL is bringing a new investor into the fold as it enters a critical offseason ahead of its third season.
The league announced on Thursday, July 31 that Mike Repole would be joining the UFL's ownership group and would head up its business operations.
Repole, 56, is an entrepreneur who is best known for co-founding two sports drink companies: Glaceau, the maker of vitaminwater and smartwater, and BODYARMOR. He sold the companies to the Coca-Cola Company for more than $12 billion.
Currently, Repole is the majority owner of NOBULL, an athletic apparel company backed by Tom Brady. He also owns Repole Stable, a horse-racing operation that has produced multiple Breeders' Cup and Belmont Stakes winners, along with Uncle Mo, who sired 2016 Kentucky Derby champion Nyquist.
"The UFL is thrilled to welcome a visionary like Mike Repole to our ownership group," UFL president and CEO Russ Brandon said in a statement announcing the development. "Mike's entrepreneurial accomplishments are extraordinary, and his dynamic leadership will immediately elevate the league's business and brand trajectory."
WHAT'S NEXT FOR UFL? News on expansion, attendance, plans for 2026 season
Why Mike Repole is investing in the UFL
Repole explained his interest in investing in the UFL stemmed from a variety of factors. Chief among them is football's ever-increasing popularity.
"Football really has distanced itself from all the other sports right now," Repole told USA TODAY in an interview. "When you see the top 100 sports shows, football has 85 of them. It's just amazing."
Repole noted that even offseason NFL events, such as the NFL scouting combine and NFL draft, draw in millions of viewers. He believes that audience indicates an appetite for football on which a spring league, like the UFL, could capitalize.
Already, Repole is confident in the league's "good" viewership. He knows it won't compare to top NFL or college football events, but he is confident it can rival the viewership of its direct competition, such as the WNBA, MLS, NHL, NBA and MLB.
"For a league that has the lowest awareness out of all these other leagues, it does pretty well," Repole said of the UFL's TV ratings.
Repole credited Brandon and Daryl Johnston for creating an on-field product that has drawn fans to watch the fledgling league. However, the 56-year-old knows it will be critical to enhance the at-game experience for the UFL to establish roots.
"When some of the stadiums look like COVID games and there are no fans, and there really isn't a cheering section, I think there's a disconnect with how the product is connecting," Repole explained.
That attendance challenge is one of the factors that excites Repole about joining the UFL. He already has started assessing ways to improve that, from potential franchise relocation to venue changes.
"I think the biggest opportunity is picking the right city, picking the right markets, picking the right venues and then really connecting with every fan, one fan at a time, and spending more time in that local region," he detailed.
What will that process look like for the UFL in 2026? Repole and the league are still mapping that out.
UFL RELOCATION RUMORS: What we know about league's plans for 2026
Nonetheless, he remains steadfast the UFL, with some tweaks, can establish itself as the a long-term staple of the spring sports calendar.
"You've heard about spring football for over 30 years now," he said. "There's a reason why people are still at it."

Disney stock slides amid sharp decline in linear TV business as outlook fails to impress

Disney (DIS) reported fiscal third quarter earnings on Wednesday that beat expectations, driven by continued strength in its domestic parks business and a year-over-year swing to profitability in its streaming unit. Still, Disney stock closed down nearly 3% as a sharp decline in the company's linear TV segment raised investor concerns and the company's outlook raise failed to impress markets. Disney raised its full-year profit forecast to $5.85 a share, up from its May forecast of $5.75. But some Wall Street analysts said the outlook left more to be desired. "The updated guide was not as good as bulls likely hoped,' KeyBanc analyst Brandon Nispel wrote in reaction, noting that while the quarter featured some bright spots, softer underlying results in parks and streaming could increase investor scrutiny ahead of Disney's fiscal 2026 guidance, due next quarter. All in on ESPN: New NFL, WWE deals Prior to its earnings update, Disney confirmed previous reports that ESPN has reached a preliminary deal to acquire key NFL Media assets, including NFL Network, NFL RedZone, and NFL Fantasy, in exchange for a 10% equity stake in the network. Alongside the sale of NFL Network, the league and ESPN have also agreed to a second deal under which the league will license certain NFL content and intellectual property to ESPN for use across NFL Network and related assets. The announcement comes as ESPN confirmed an Aug. 21 launch date for its new standalone service, which is set to cost $29.99 per month. The NFL agreement comes ahead of another major rights deal unveiled this week: ESPN will become the exclusive US streaming home of WWE Premium Live Events, including WrestleMania and SummerSlam, beginning in 2026 — a move seen as further strengthening the content lineup for its new DTC service. The five-year deal will cost ESPN an average of $325 million per year, according to the Wall Street Journal. Disney declined to confirm the financials when asked by Yahoo Finance. Analysts see the ESPN streaming debut as a key step toward more bundling opportunities with Disney+ and Hulu as streamers across the industry work to retain subscribers and reduce churn. The NFL deal had been previously reported by the Athletic. Ahead of its confirmation, Morgan Stanley analyst Ben Swinburne wrote in a Monday note, "With the NFL as an investor, ESPN's long-term future is incrementally more secure." Legacy headwinds meet digital gains Disney reported revenue of $23.65 billion for the quarter, roughly in line with analyst expectations of $23.68 billion and up 2% from the same period last year. Adjusted earnings per share of $1.61 were ahead of the $1.46 expected by analysts polled by Bloomberg. Earnings increased from $1.39 per share a year ago. However, ongoing weakness in Disney's linear networks business weighed on the quarter. Revenue in the segment fell 15% year over year while operating income dropped 28%. On the streaming front, Disney said it will merge its Disney+ and Hulu platforms next year. "This will create an impressive package of entertainment, pairing the highest-caliber brands and franchises, great general entertainment, family programming, news, and industry-leading live sports content in a single app," the executive team wrote on Wednesday. Disney+ added 1.8 million subscribers in the quarter, falling short of the 2.05 million analysts polled by Bloomberg had expected. Disney's direct-to-consumer segment, which includes Hulu and Disney+, posted a profit of $346 million, compared to a $19 million loss a year ago. The company continues to prioritize consistent profitability in streaming amid the ongoing shift away from traditional pay-TV. Disney is targeting approximately $875 million in streaming profits for fiscal 2025. Theme parks power on Meanwhile, the parks business continued to shine in the quarter, though analysts flagged potential headwinds ahead. Revenue of $9.09 billion beat expectations of $8.87 billion, with the company posting a 22% rise in operating income at its domestic parks. Walt Disney World delivered record Q3 revenue, while broader gains were fueled by increased guest spending, higher hotel occupancy, and a rise in cruise volumes following the successful launch of the Disney Treasure late last year. On the earnings call, executives said bookings for the Experiences segment are tracking about 6% higher so far in the current quarter, signaling continued strength across parks, cruises, and resorts. Still, attendance growth at domestic parks came in flat compared to last year, suggesting intensifying competition in key markets like Orlando, where NBCUniversal's new Epic Universe theme park opened in May. Why former Georgia RB is in contract dispute with the Buffalo Bills

Former Georgia Bulldog running back James Cook is looking for an extension with the Buffalo Bills. Unfortunately, the extension talks have sputtered to the point where there's been speculation that Cook might be "holding in" as a non-participant in practices, according to Rory Parks of TradeRumors. Cook is entering the final year of his rookie contract with the Buffalo Bills and wants a new deal. There have been many instances of players holding out or holding in until they earn a new contract, but when he reported to the first training camp practice on July 24, it gave indication that Cook would practice. That changed on Aug. 3. Cook was a non-participant on Sunday's practice, and when asked about why by ESPN's Alaina Getzenberg, he said "business". He kept repeating it on follow-up questions too. General manager Brandon Beane didn't see Cook's hold-in coming. "Yeah, you know, it's not something we were fully aware of until shortly before practice," Beane said, via The Buffalo News. "So, I get it, I understand it; it's the world we're in, I guess, of how players want to respond and things like that. "So, you know, at the end of the day, I wish we weren't here," Bean said. "This is my ninth season here, we've never had a player miss due to a contract or anything like that, so that's disappointing for me." Cook's has an asking price of at least $15M per year, he publicly announced via his Instagram. That would tie him with Derrick Henry for the third-highest average annual value among all NFL running backs. The Bills have already reached long-term deals with quarterback Josh Allen, wide receiver Khalil Shakir, cornerback Christian Benford, edge rusher Gregory Rousseau, and linebacker Terrel Bernard, so they could be looking to save a little on Cook's extension. Cook wants to be paid what he believes he's worth. He's arguably the second-most important player in the Bills' offense behind quarterback Josh Allen. In the regular season, Cook recorded 1,009 rushing yards, 16 rushing touchdowns and caught 32 passes. In the playoffs, Cook posted over 300 total yards and three touchdowns as he helped the Bills advance to the AFC championship game. He has blossomed at the NFL level, but not every NFL team values the running back position. Before he became a two-time Pro Bowl running back with the Bills, Cook played for four seasons with the Georgia Bulldogs, racking up 1,503 yards and 14 touchdowns on 230 carries. He even caught 67 passes for 730 yards and 6 touchdowns. His elusive, versatile running style fit in perfectly with the bruising, hard-hitting running style of Zamir White, and it was on full display when both of them rushed for a combined 165 yards on 19 carries against Alabama to win the 2021 national championship.
