CBS Sports puts Spartans low in 1-136 preseason rankings
Would you say Navy is better than Michigan State? What about Memphis, UNLV or Texas State? The Dukes of James Madison? Those are all group of five programs ranked higher than the Spartans in CBS Sports' preseason 1-136 rankings. The poll that ranks every single team in the country has Michigan State coming in at No. 62 nationally -- which I personally consider too low for the Spartans.
Among Big Ten teams, Michigan State is No. 14 out of 18 teams. That would be a very disappointing finish for the Spartans should they end the season ranked that low among their peers.
Michigan State is coming off a 5-7 season last year, which was their third straight season of failing to reach a bowl game. There is, however, a lot of confidence within the program that things will go better for the Spartans this season, with making a bowl game being the minimum expectation.
Michigan State will get its first chance to prove the doubters wrong this year in the season-opener against Western Michigan on August 29. Kickoff from Spartan Stadium for this matchup between the Spartans and Broncos is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.

Kalen DeBoer updates status of two injured Alabama starting linemen
According to head coach Kalen DeBoer, a pair of starting Alabama Crimson Tide linemen have missed the program's second consecutive scrimmage of fall camp. Those players are offensive guard Jaeden Roberts and defensive tackle James Smith, both of which are dealing with injuries leading up to Alabama's season opener at Florida State on Saturday, Aug. 30, according to DeBoer. DeBoer also recently gave an update on the status of both following the Crimson Tide's scrimmage Saturday, saying of the duo: "Two guys that didn't scrimmage today, Jaeden and James, same as last week," DeBoer said. "James has been working through and building up. Feel good about the progress he's had in the week of practice and with it being live. Needed to hold back there, but he's getting closer by the day." "Jaeden has a concussion, just to tell you what it is, and he's going through the protocol of that and hasn't done anything from a team standpoint. Starting to work back into that protocol, which included being out there today, but not to participate in the scrimmage." A storyline to monitor leading up to Week 1, if Roberts is unavailable for the season opener, then Geno VanDeMark would likely step into the starting role at right guard. If Smith is unavailable, then names such as Jeremiah Beaman and Edric Hill could see increased snaps at defensive tackle. Alabama will open the 2025 season Saturday, Aug. 30 on the road at Florida State. Nebraska football in the mix for four-star defensive lineman Jamar Thompson
Nebraska football is making a firm push for class of 2027 four-star defensive lineman Jamar Thompson. This was reported by Rivals' Marcus Benjamin on Friday. Thompson is the No. 101 overall player in the 2027 class, the seventh overall defensive lineman in the class, and the ninth overall player from the state of Florida in his class, according to the Rivals Industry Rankings. Alabama, Georgia, Miami, Notre Dame, and Syracuse are the schools that are standing out most in his recruitment. The Huskers have been in communication with Thompson quite a bit lately. Defensive line coach Terry Bradden has been the primary point of contact for the Huskers. Thompson had 66 tackles and four sacks in 15 games last season, per statistics from The Huskers could benefit from more talented defensive linemen, and Thompson certainly brings a strong skill set. Playing under Bradden could only help him further enhance his game. The program will have to work cut out for them in this recruitment. MSU basketball considered a top 'talent' team in analytical rankings system
Michigan State basketball will have one of the most talented teams in the Big Ten next year, according to a popular analytical rankings system. The Torvik rankings provide an analytical look at a number of different factors for the college basketball landscape, including rankings for talent projection. For Michigan State, that ranking is in the top 15 nationally. Per a post from Ant Wright, Michigan State ranks No. 15 in national talent projection. Among Big Ten teams, that is No. 4 -- only behind Oregon (No. 10), Michigan (No. 11), Illinois (No. 12) and UCLA (No. 13). Interesting, Purdue is ranked No. 21 nationally in this metric, while the Boilermakers are considered the preseason top team nationally in some media outlets.
