Unpacking Future Packers: No. 73, Georgia G Dylan Fairchild

USA Today11-02-2025
The Unpacking Future Packers Countdown is a countdown of 100 prospects who could be selected by the Green Bay Packers in the 2025 NFL draft.
A team can never have enough talented offensive linemen and Brian Gutekunst has done an exceptional job of continuously investing in the group up front for the Green Bay Packers.
During the 2024 NFL Draft, he used his first-round pick and a pair of Day 3 picks on offensive linemen to bolster the depth of an already solid group.
It's a safe bet that Green Bay's general manager will again invest a pick or two on the offensive line during the 2025 draft to continue building up the Great Wall of Lambeau.
A player that Gutekunst could target in the upcoming draft is Dylan Fairchild. The Georgia guard checks in at No. 73 in the Unpacking Future Packers Countdown.
A four-star recruit out of Georgia, Fairchild finished his career as a Bulldog with 24 career starts to his name.
'Fairchild was a guy with big expectations coming into Georgia, as a former four-star recruit, and he delivered,' Jack Reuse, an analyst for DawgsHQ.com, said. 'With 24 career starts under his belt, he was a reliable asset for the offensive front and brought a toughness to the field.'
Fairchild stays balanced on his feet and has excellent reaction quickness. He anchors against power in his pass sets and has adequate lateral athleticism. A former state champion in wrestling, Fairchild plays with outstanding pad level. According to Pro Football Focus, Fairchild gave up one sack and nine pressures this past season.
'Fairchild has a decorated past in wrestling, so he understands leverage as well as anyone out there,' Reuse said. 'Pair that with ample power and size, and it's no surprise he was effective in the pass-blocking game.'
The Georgia guard is a bully. Fairchild is a powerful run blocker who overwhelmed defenders at the point of contact with his brute strength. He explodes out of his stance and has the easy athleticism to climb to the second level and eliminate linebackers.
'While Georgia struggled to run the ball effectively this season, it's tough to pin that on just one guy,' Reuse said. 'It was a collectively rough effort in that regard. Still, in what felt like a MASH unit at times, Fairchild was available consistently and offered nastiness on the field.'
Fairchild figures to be one of the top testers among interior offensive linemen at the NFL Scouting Combine. He was No. 43 on Bruce Feldman's Freaks List this summer. From Feldman:
'A former two-time Georgia state heavyweight wrestling champ who went 67-0 with 67 pins in his junior and senior years of high school, Fairchild bench pressed 440 pounds, squatted, 570 and power cleaned 370 this offseason. The 6-5, 315-pound fourth-year junior has a 26-inch vertical and broad-jumped 9-2.'
Fit with the Packers
Green Bay's lack of interior depth reared its ugly head during the Wild Card matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. With Jordan Morgan already on injured reserve, the Packers had to turn to Travis Glover after starting left guard Elgton Jenkins left the game with an injury. After the rookie flamed out, the Packers turned to Kadeem Telfort, who didn't fare any better than Glover.
With Josh Myers set to hit free agency, the Packers could slide Jenkins over to center and plug Morgan in at left guard. Regardless of what happens with Myers, Gutekunst will likely invest a pick or two into the interior of the offensive line.
Fairchild is as strong as a bull and good range as a run blocker. With his experience playing both guard spots he would provide quality depth along the interior with the possibility of taking over at right guard if the Packers are unable to lock Sean Rhyan up to a long-term deal.
'Fairchild is a guy who's going to offer some high-level skill in a very usable frame,' Reuse said. 'That wrestling background, plus his durability, are also highly desirable traits. He's a head-down, go-to-work kind of guy, and it won't shock me to see him quietly put together a long career in the league.'
A year ago, Gutekunst used the first-round pick and a pair of Day 3 picks on the offensive line. With Zach Tom, Rasheed Walker and Rhyan all entering contract years, and Myers set to hit the open market this offseason, it would not be surprising to see Gutekunst use multiple picks on offensive linemen in the 2025 draft.
Fairchild has the frame, strength and athleticism to develop into a solid starting guard in the NFL. The Georgia guard would provide quality depth along the interior as a rookie and could challenge for a starting role in 2026.

Dillon Gabriel insists 'There's entertainers and there's competitors' remark was not swipe at Shedeur Sanders

Dillon Gabriel appeared to throw some shade in addition to his 18 passes during his preseason debut on Saturday for the Cleveland Browns. But it wasn't directed at fellow rookie Shedeur Sanders, as many immediately speculated. After sitting out the Browns' preseason opener with a hamstring injury, Gabriel got the start versus the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles and played respectably. He completed 13 of 18 passes, but one of them was returned for a pick 6 by Eagles rookie safety Andrew Mukuba. However, Gabriel made a remark during a televised interview that quickly raised eyebrows. Speaking on the sideline after Tyler Huntley took over at QB, he appeared to take a swipe at Sanders, with whom he's competing for a spot on the Browns' depth chart and perhaps a spot on the roster. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Asked by reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala to share his thoughts on "tuning out the noise" and not letting it interfere with his preparation, Gabriel seemingly addressed something unrelated to the question. "There's entertainers and there's competitors, and I totally understand that," Gabriel said. "But my job is to compete. And that's what I'm focused on." Interpreting that comment as a dig at Sanders could be taking the remark out of context. But the exact exchange went like this: Kinkhabwala: "You gave us some fabulous wisdom on how you tune out the noise and don't let it infiltrate yourself; will you share that with everybody at home?" Gabriel: "Yeah, it's just part of it. You know, there's entertainers and there's competitors, and I totally understand that. But my job is to compete. And that's what I'm focused on." Gabriel was asked about demonstrating leadership and talking to receivers and running backs on the sideline in the previous question. So it's possible he was continuing some thoughts on that, even though Kinkhabwala went on to another question. Another possibility was that Gabriel remembered what he heard at Oregon — perhaps head coach Dan Lanning, in particular — about facing Sanders and Colorado. Lanning infamously made a pregame locker room speech in which he told his players, "They're fighting for clicks, we're fighting for wins." However, Bo Nix was Oregon's quarterback that season. Gabriel was at Oklahoma. And the Ducks did not play the Buffaloes during his lone season at Oregon after transferring. Yet it's not difficult to imagine that Gabriel talked to his former coaches and teammates before he was preparing to compete against Colorado's outspoken QB in a competition for a roster spot. As a third-round draft pick, Gabriel's place on the roster seems more assured than Sanders, who was selected in the fifth round. Yet Sanders has received decidedly more attention from media and fans because of his drop down the NFL draft board and his self-promoting persona at Colorado that continued leading up to the draft. In his preseason debut, Sanders threw for 138 yards and completed 14 of 23 passes with two touchdowns. Gabriel's remark, especially the "entertainers" crack, didn't seem to be addressing the media, Yet he insisted otherwise when asked about it after Saturday's game, saying he was referring to the media with that. (Other NFL reporters supported that notion, faulting the league's social media channels for posting the clip out of context.) "I'm all about my team and each other," Gabriel said. Though Gabriel was actually taking a shot at the media, not Sanders, the comment will still likely be picked apart and become a topic during the upcoming week of practice. As a result, Gabriel possibly created the very noise he was asked about tuning out.

Here's what you need to know: What: NFL Preseason Who: Giants vs. Jets When: August 16, 2025 (8/16/25) Where: Metlife Stadium Time: 7 p.m. ET TV: NFL Network Live stream: DirecTV, Sling, Fubo *** Here's a preview capsule via the Associated Press: EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner sat out the team's joint practice with the Giants on Wednesday because of a sore calf. Gardner participated in practice Tuesday at the Jets' facility in Florham Park but wasn't spotted during the teams' session at the Giants' facility Wednesday. 'Sauce wasn't out (there) today,' coach Aaron Glenn said after practice. 'He had some calf soreness. We'll continue to evaluate him and see exactly where he's at.' Gardner has been one of the Jets' best players since being drafted fourth overall out of Cincinnati in 2022. He was the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year and was an All-Pro selection in his first two NFL seasons. The 24-year-old Gardner had a slightly off season, by his standards, last year but is still considered one of the league's elite cornerbacks. Gardner signed a four-year, $120.4 million extension through the 2030 season, making him the NFL's highest-paid player at his position. He also is the focal point of a new-look secondary for the Jets, who have Gardner and free-agent signing Brandon Stephens at cornerback, with Michael Carter as the nickelback and free-agent signing Andre Cisco and Tony Adams at safety. The Jets don't have another full practice before their preseason game against the Giants on Saturday night. Glenn declined to say whether he would play his starters in that game — 'The plan is the plan,' is all he would divulge — so it's unclear if Gardner would participate even if healthy. Typically, teams play their starters for a quarter or a half in the second game, using it as a warmup for the regular season while backups typically play the final preseason game. Rookie quarterback Brady Cook, an undrafted free agent out of Missouri, was back on the field after leaving practice Tuesday with an ankle injury after someone stepped on his foot. He didn't participate in team drills. 'Held him out, but I anticipate him playing this week,' Glenn said. 'So that's good.' Cook is one of just three healthy quarterbacks on the Jets' roster, with starter Justin Fields and Adrian Martinez. Glenn announced Tuesday that veteran backup Tyrod Taylor had arthroscopic knee surgery and wouldn't play the rest of the preseason.
