AI-led ad frauds skim billions from brands one click at a time

ETtech Want to boost your Instagram reel views? You can now buy 1,000 views for a dollar. From China to Egypt, the booming black market of fake clicks or 'click farms' are gaming the system to artificially inflate website traffic metrics and mislead ad fraud tactics like traffic exchange credits, proxy traffic services are burning advertising dollars. For instance, in a traffic exchange networks, users agree to view each other's websites in order to increase page views or ad impressions, but they do not lead to any real engagement or conversions. And AI is only making such scams more sophisticated with tricks like ad hijacking, cloaked sites, and smart redirects.'We're seeing an avalanche of AI-led fake traffic,' said Dhiraj Gupta, founder of digital fraud detection firm mFilterIt. 'Tools like ChatGPT can now generate thousands of sites in hours, and platforms like offer millions of bot hits for a few thousand dollars.'Nearly 22% ($84 billion) of online ad spend is lost to ad fraud in 2023 and is expected to reach over $170 billion by 2028, according to Juniper to research by cybersecurity firm Imperva, bots now account for over 51% of all internet traffic, surpassing human activity for the first time. Nearly 37% of all internet traffic was characterised by bad bots for activities like account hijacking, data scraping and mimicking human behaviour to avoid measurement company DoubleVerify (DV) found an 86% year-over-year increase in invalid bot traffic in late 2024, which they attribute to the rise in AI-powered crawlers and scrapers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot. While these bots lack malicious intent, they can distort campaign metrics, inflate impression counts, and undermine trust in the digital advertising ecosystem, the report are largely unaware of the scale of the problem, Gupta emphasised. Even top-tier brands have been caught off-guard by such bot attacks. For instance, a major OTT platform crashed due to 100% bot traffic and 52% click-through-rate, a clear sign of made-up engagement, he recalled. During the India-Pakistan tensions, several YouTube videos were injected with hate speech ads maligning the platform's and brand's reputation, he a base level, the ad-fraud economy is booming because many brands still track success by the number of clicks and impressions registered, which are easy to manipulate. 'Fraudsters optimise for surface metrics,' said Shailesh Dhuri, CEO, Decimal Point Analytics. 'True effectiveness only shows when you remove the inflated numbers from bots.'The company has observed a spike in bot sophistication enabled by simulated mouse movements, and even fake conversion paths. The AI models analyse everything from scroll behaviour to entropy in click timing and device fingerprint inconsistencies, Dhuri explained. In fact, nowadays, fraud-adjusted dashboards filter out bot traffic to provide more accurate ROI the threat goes beyond bots clicking ads. Scammers are increasingly using generative AI to craft deepfake ads, clone websites, and create mechanical influencer videos.'There have been fake betting ads using AI-generated videos of Sachin Tendulkar, Shah Rukh Khan, and Virat Kohli which look alarmingly real, even fooling detection systems,' said Pratim Mukherjee, senior director of engineering, are increasingly employing dynamic short-form content, such as reels and shorts, enhanced withAI-generated celebrity voices and movements, to create highly convincing attacks that deceive social media users, Mukherjee cyber protection firmware company detected over 36,000 fake Amazon sites and more than 75,000 impersonation scam texts around Prime Day sale in July this also highlighted the need for a native traffic verification framework, something that is tailored to the country's massive scale and ecosystem.'You need AI to fight AI,' said Gupta. 'Our models track traffic patterns as a unit, looking for clusters that behave identically and deviate from normal human activity. But too often, brands don't even know they're being hit.'

Layoff jitters in Bengaluru: As techies flock to office, traffic spirals on Outer Ring Road

Bengaluru: The tech capital's infamous traffic has found a new villain: fear of layoffs. As job insecurity grips the tech sector, especially in the wake of AI-led downsizing, a curious trend has emerged: travel time on all working days of the week has increased on the Outer Ring Road (ORR), with Wednesday turning out to be the worst day to be on the road! Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP), who analyse the vehicle-parking data from 26 tech parks on ORR, said there was a 20-45% rise in vehicular flow at tech parks in June 2024 compared to June 2024. The surge in traffic on ORR (from Silk Board Junction to KR Pura), Sarjapur Road, and the roads leading to Electronics City has been more glaring in the past three weeks as layoffs have become near-daily headlines. The talk in HR circles is that more employees are choosing to be seen in office rather than risk being labelled dispensable while working remotely. You Can Also Check: Bengaluru AQI | Weather in Bengaluru | Bank Holidays in Bengaluru | Public Holidays in Bengaluru "I can't afford to be invisible," said Rahul Shetty (name changed), a senior developer who now makes it a point to show up at his office in a tech park near Doddanekundi, on ORR, at least four times a week. "These days, optics matter. Being seen at your desk might ensure job security," he added. This line of thinking, despite lacking definitive data to substantiate it, is resulting in a bumper-to-bumper nightmare on ORR. So much so that the new traffic police chief, joint commissioner (traffic) Karthik Reddy, proposed a work-from-home arrangement for tech employees every Wednesday, during a recent high-level coordination meeting involving officials from BBMP, BMTC, and representatives of the Greater Bengaluru IT and Companies Association. "Peak traffic is observed between 9am and 10am on all weekdays, but Wednesday stands out because of an increase in office attendance by IT employees. We've recommended that tech firms either allow work-from-home every Wednesday or shift office timings to start by 7.30am and end earlier in the day," Reddy told TOI. The vehicle-parking data collected by BTP paints a stark picture. In June 2024, an average of 82,168 vehicles were recorded on Wednesdays. This June, the number jumped to a staggering 1.2 lakh — a 45% increase. The spike, officials believe, isn't just about the corporate mandate to return to office but also speaks to employee anxiety. Motorists seek better infra, not just WFH Traffic police's suggestion to corporate head honchos to put in place a work-from-home arrangement for tech employees every Wednesday has turned the spotlight on Bengaluru's broken civic infrastructure, which techies and other commuters insist must be fixed on priority. Suma Santosh, a data analyst working with a multinational company in Bellandur, said: "Work-from-home for a single day is only a temporary band-aid. The deeper problem lies in poor pedestrian infrastructure. I live barely 2.5km from my office, but I'm forced to take my two-wheeler because walking is unsafe and inconvenient. If proper footpaths and crossings existed, at least 25% of two-wheeler traffic could be cut down. " Others pointed to the uncoordinated construction activities choking the tech corridor. "From Metro construction to BWSSB's pipeline works to road widening, everything is happening at the same time," said Vikram Naik, project lead in a company located in Marathahalli. "There's no synchronisation between agencies. This chaos is what's fuelling peak-hour gridlocks." A BBMP official, who attended the recent coordination meeting, admitted that simultaneous infrastructure works have exacerbated congestion. "We're working with BMRCL and BWSSB to ensure better coordination in project planning. We're also exploring the feasibility of creating parallel service roads or alternative routes to divert traffic." While tech firms have shown preliminary support for staggered timings and hybrid policies, sources say the implementation needs logistical planning. Sridhar M, an HR executive with a tech major, said: "Work-from-home arrangement on Wednesdays is doable but optional. Some roles demand physical presence. We're open to encouraging early shift starts, and promoting carpooling and BMTC usage among our employees. " With tech zones such as Bellandur, Marathahalli, Kadubeesanahalli, and Devarabisanahalli continuing to bear the brunt of urban congestion, the coming weeks will test how well coordination, policy tweaks, and corporate cooperation can collectively decongest the city's IT backbone.

Amazon Q2 profit jumps 35% to $18.2 billion, driven by AI and AWS growth

Amazon reported a 35 percent jump in quarterly profits Thursday as the e-commerce giant said major investments in artificial intelligence began paying off. The Seattle-based company posted net profit of $18.2 billion for the second quarter that ended June 30, compared with $13.5 billion in the same period last year. Net sales climbed 13 percent to $167.7 billion, beating analyst expectations and signaling that the global company was surviving the impacts of the high-tariff trade policy under US President Donald Trump. "Our conviction that AI will change every customer experience is starting to play out," said Chief Executive Andy Jassy, pointing to the company's expanded Alexa service and new AI shopping agents. Amazon Web Services (AWS), the company's world leading cloud computing division, led the charge with sales jumping 17.5 percent to $30.9 billion. The unit's operating profit rose to $10.2 billion from $9.3 billion a year earlier. The strong AWS performance reflects surging demand for cloud infrastructure to power AI applications, a trend that has benefited major cloud providers as companies race to adopt generative AI technologies. Despite the stellar results, investors seemed worried about Amazon's big cash outlays to pursue its AI ambitions, sending its share price more than three percent lower in after-hours trading. The company's free cash flow declined sharply to $18.2 billion for the trailing 12 months, down from $53 billion in the same period last year, as Amazon ramped up capital spending on AI infrastructure and logistics. The company spent $32.2 billion on property and equipment in the quarter, nearly double the $17.6 billion spent a year earlier, reflecting massive investments in data centers and backroom capabilities. Amazon has pledged to spend up to $100 billion this year, largely on AI-related investments for AWS. For the current quarter, Amazon forecast net sales between $174.0 billion and $179.5 billion, representing solid growth of 10-13 percent compared with the third quarter of 2024. Operating profit was expected to range from $15.5 billion to $20.5 billion in the current third quarter, which was lower than some had hoped for and likely also a factor in investor disappointment.
