Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh granted 40-day parole

Jailed Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, serving a 20-year jail term for raping two of his disciples, has been granted a 40-day parole, sources said on Tuesday.
Singh (57) will stay at his Sirsa-headquartered Dera during the 40-day period beginning Tuesday, the sources said.
This comes months after Singh walked out of the Sunaria jail in Haryana's Rohtak after being granted a 21-day furlough in April.
In January, Singh was granted a 30-day parole, ahead of the February 5 Delhi Assembly polls.
He was also granted a 20-day parole on October 1 last year, ahead of the October 5 Haryana Assembly polls.
Singh was convicted in 2017 for raping two of his disciples.
In May last year, the Punjab and Haryana High Court acquitted the Dera chief and four others in the 2002 murder of the sect's former manager Ranjit Singh, citing "tainted and sketchy" investigations into the matter.
Earlier, a special CBI court sentenced them to life imprisonment in the nearly 20-year-old murder case. It held Singh guilty of hatching a criminal conspiracy with his co-accused.
The Sirsa-headquartered Dera Sacha Sauda has a number of followers in Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and other states. In Haryana, the Dera has a sizable number of followers in many districts, including Sirsa, Fatehabad, Kurukshetra, Kaithal and Hisar.

Clarify land pooling policy: HC to Punjab
The Punjab government on Wednesday submitted in the Punjab and Haryana High Court that the recently introduced Land Pooling Policy, 2025, would be kept on hold till the next date of hearing, i.e. Thursday. The court was hearing a writ petition that challenged the Punjab government's land pooling policy introduced in June this year. The court asked the State government to clarify whether an Environmental Impact Assessment had been carried out before notifying the Land Pooling Policy, 2025. The court, in its interim order, directed the government to inform the court if there was any provision in the policy for the rehabilitation of the landless labourers and others who do not own any land but are dependent on the land for their sustenance. Petitioner Gurdeep Singh Gill had submitted that the policy was notified without carrying out the necessary environmental and social impact assessment, which is an essential prerequisite for the acquisition of land under Sections 4 to 8 of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013. The petitioner, a resident of Phagla village in Ludhiana district, owns 6 acres of land, which was allotted to his father as a displaced person in lieu of their land in Lyallpur district in Pakistan. The petitioner argued that they have invested and have made improvements to the land, which is now fertile but has been included in the policy. Mr. Gill also contended that there is no provision for providing compensation at the time of acquisition, and only an annual meagre livelihood allowance would be paid. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has hit out at the Opposition parties for spreading 'misleading propaganda' against the State government's policy, with party leaders describing it as 'farmer-friendly'. The Punjab Cabinet in June gave its nod to the policy and asserted that not a single yard will be forcibly acquired from the owners.

Driving licences to be delivered at applicants' doorstep: Govt
Bhopal: Driving licences in Madhya Pradesh will now be dispatched directly to the homes of applicants, transport minister Udai Pratap Singh told the state assembly on Wednesday. Responding to a debate on the MP Motor Vehicle Taxation (Amendment) Act, Singh said the transport dept was focused not just on tax collection but also on improving public services. "Most jobs done at RTOs have an online facility now thereby saving people from making rounds of RTO and only when a photo of a person has to be clicked, he has to go to the RTO office," the minister said. "Be it applying for a licence or a permit or paying a penalty, everything can be done online and the department now proposes to dispatch smart licence cards to the home address of the applicants," he said. Earlier, BJP MLA Vhgwandas Sabnani requested the minister to give smart card-like licences to people so that it was easily preserved and also send the licences to the home address of the applicant as the passport offices do.

Forces intensify ops, key arrests made
Imphal: Security forces in Manipur have intensified their crackdown on underground activities and criminal networks targeting insurgents, arms smugglers and vehicle lifters across the state and arrested insurgents and criminals in Imphal West and East in the past two days. On Aug 5, an active cadre of the banned outfit Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL), identified as Sagolsem Hemanta Singh (41) of Phumlou Keiroi Maning Leikai in Imphal West district, was arrested from his residence. According to officials, Singh was involved in recruiting cadres for the proscribed group. A mobile phone was seized from him. On the same day, security personnel apprehended Naobi Leishangthem (33), also known as Youhenba, a member of the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP - Military & Foreign Liaison), from a rented house in Lamphel Yaipha Leikai in Imphal West. He was reportedly engaged in extortion and illegal settlements of criminal cases. In a separate operation on Aug 4, two suspected arms smugglers were nabbed from different parts of Imphal East. Ningombam Abung Meitei (50) of Huidrom Awang Leikai was arrested from Pourabi Hidumbi, while Ningthoujam Konungjao Meetei (33) of Keibi Khulen Makha Leikai was picked up from his residence.
