Tejasvi Surya flags metro fare hike in Lok Sabha, demands Yellow Line be made operational soon
Speaking during Zero Hour, Mr. Surya said: 'About four months ago, BMRCL hiked metro fares by nearly 130%. Public transport must be affordable for the common man. This hike has significantly reduced ridership.'
He demanded that BMRCL make the FFC report public, stressing that transparency is essential in a democracy. 'Despite several requests, the report remains unpublished. I urge the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) to direct BMRCL to release it immediately,' he said.
Mr. Surya also called for the early operationalisation of the long-delayed Yellow Line, stating that it is key to addressing Bengaluru's traffic woes. 'The city's infrastructure deficit is growing. Metro expansion is the only sustainable solution,' he added.
The 19-km Yellow Line connects R.V. Road to Bommasandra, spanning 16 stations and linking major residential and industrial zones, including Electronics City. Initially set for completion in 2021, the project has been delayed by over four years owing to the lack of metro rolling stock.

Once again, tribals to protest Par-Tapi-Narmada river-linking project
Surat: Reviving protests against Par-Tapi-Narmada river-linking project in South Gujarat after a gap of three years, a rally has been announced in the Dharampur area of Valsad on Aug 14. Over 5,000 people of tribal communities from affected regions are expected to take part in the demonstration. Members of the tribal committee, overseeing the protest, met in Nadagdhari village near Dharampur and worked out a strategy to restart the protest. The protest was revived after a detailed project report (DPR) was presented in Parliament. "Ahead of the 2022 assembly election, chief minister Bhupendra Patel declared the project scrapped during his visit to Surat in May. However, now a DPR has been presented in the Lok Sabha and thousands of tribals have been forced to restart the protest for survival," said Anant Patel, Congress MLA from Vansda. The project involves linking three rivers — Par, originating from Nashik in Maharashtra and flowing through Valsad; Tapi from Saputara that flows through Maharashtra and Surat in Gujarat; and Narmada originating in Madhya Pradesh and flowing through Maharashtra and Bharuch and Narmada districts in Gujarat — to transfer river water from the surplus regions of the Western Ghats to the deficit regions of Saurashtra and Kutch. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Access all TV channels anywhere, anytime Techno Mag Undo Envisioned 40 years ago under the 1980 National Perspective Plan, the project, which also proposes to have multiple dams, was put aside a few times due to protests. In 2022, mention of the project in the Union budget speech sparked widespread protests in South Gujarat. After its recent mention in Parliament, around 1 lakh tribals who fear losing their homes have begun protests anew. The village committees that were formed in 2022 are being resurrected to sensitise people about the impact of the project. In South Gujarat, a large part of Dang and Valsad will be impacted due to the network of dams and canals. "Earlier, seven dams were planned, but now two more dams have been added in the DPR details. Nearly 30,000 families will be affected. Their villages, farmland, and livelihood will be submerged in dam water," added Patel. "The tribal populations, who have lived in harmony with their natural surroundings for generations, feel that the project threatens their traditional way of life. They fear displacement, loss of livelihood, and the destruction of their ancestral lands," said Kalpesh Patel, a tribal rights activist.

Abhishek Banerjee appointed as TMC Lok Sabha party chief, replaces Sudip Bandyopadhyay
Taking to X in the late evening, Abhishek said, 'I am deeply honoured by the trust reposed in me by our party chairperson Didi @MamataOfficial and my fellow MPs of the All India Trinamool Congress, in choosing me to lead our parliamentary party in the Lok Sabha.' 'With full commitment and humility, I take on this responsibility and pledge to work closely with all my colleagues to ensure that Trinamool's voice remains strong and unwavering in Parliament. Together, we will continue to resist the authoritarianism of the Union Government and defend the core values of our Constitution - JUSTICE, LIBERTY, EQUALITY AND FRATERNITY,' he stated. 'Our mission remains clear: To protect the rights, respect and aspirations of the people of Bengal. I thank every dedicated worker and supporter of the @AITCofficial for their continued belief in me and our cause and I am also extremely grateful to our senior parliamentarians for their invaluable support, guidance and encouragement,' the post added. The development marks a significant step in consolidating Abhishek's stature within the party, adding to his role as national general secretary — widely seen as the second-most important position in the TMC. Political observers called the decision 'inevitable', given Abhishek's growing influence over party affairs in recent years. He was also designated as the TMC's 'Delhi spokesperson' during the working committee meeting in November last year. Sources said Mamata addressed Sudip Bandyopadhyay directly during the virtual meeting and asked him to rest and focus on recovery. 'Didi told him that Abhishek will look after the Lok Sabha responsibilities now, including preparing the list of speakers and obtaining her approval,' said an MP present in the meeting. When Bandyopadhyay offered to return to Delhi, Mamata reportedly told him it was not necessary. Sudip Bandyopadhyay, who has been battling illness for months, has not attended a single sitting of the current Parliament session. Another TMC veteran, Saugata Roy, is also unwell and currently hospitalised.
